This got me thinking, when was the last time we had a tall and athletic post player?Gophers need to work on the Ally-oop for the slam. Something we rarely see.
Now we have two of them in Mpoyi and Kordel. Having size is a nice option. If you need a stop in a close game, getting a stop includes getting the rebound. That was tough for us last year. This got me thinking, when was the last time we had a tall and athletic post player?
Dawson was good, but certainly didn't play much above the rim.
Last year, we were rolling out a 6'7" C.
Oturu? Payne? Parker Fox maybe?? Robbins? This got me thinking, when was the last time we had a tall and athletic post player?

Good question. Game has changed so much over the years. I'd say Oturu, but I never saw him as a true post player (of course, I'm 72 and as I said earlier, the days of big guys just posting up low are pretty much long gone). I thought Reggie Lynch was more the true post prototype. So, one of those two depending on what you want your post guy to do.This got me thinking, when was the last time we had a tall and athletic post player?

Sprechen sie douche?Well, he certainly doesn't lack size! 7'2" and 275 lbs.; German - that's been a good choice lately.
Again, more evidence that Niko is taking a developmental approach with at least part of next year's team.
Niko's definitely looking at guys with multiple years to play. No, you can't count on them staying, but if these high ceiling young players blow up we've got a better chance to retain them for less money, than to find similar skilled guys on the open market. You think he is betting on keeping these guys multiple years? Maybe, but that is super risky in this new world. You can develop but you also have to win enough while doing it, that it makes them want to stay and that it makes your boosters want to pay. I think he is gambling that he can get to the tournament next year with higher end talent that comes in a little raw. Maybe that is exactly what you mean...not sure.
I think what you've hit on is that the guys in that spot (other than JCJ) are going to be there to pass, screen, foul, and provide minutes. Anything other than that is a bonus. There's a good chance this our starting Center next season imo & not a long term developmental guy.
7"2" 275lbs, athletic & physical. He's a grown man who'll be 23 y/o next season & is ready to play.
He might foul out after 20 mins every game, but Grove proved he can give us 10+ quality minutes off the bench every night, JCJ can play that spot when we go small & Mpoyi might give us 5-10 mins a night.
Normally referred to as "SPACE-EATERS!"I think what you've hit on is that the guys in that spot (other than JCJ) are going to be there to pass, screen, foul, and provide minutes. Anything other than that is a bonus.
Oturu, Payne, and Fox are all undersized as well.Oturu? Payne? Parker Fox maybe?? Robbins?

Well a little? I can swear in "Deutsch"!Sprechen sie douche?![]()

Liam Robbins was 7ft and could do everything.

Liam was skilled but not very athletic.
This might have to be the way for a while. Let the blue bloods/money teams recruit great prospects and then when they portal guys over the top of them, take the prospects. In years past it would have been hard for us to recruit guys like Grady and Kordel who had big offer lists to sign as frosh. With how expensive bigs are it won't surprise me if Niko's strategy is to take guys with potential over production each year.
Yes, right after Ramdy Bruerer. Will he be second tallest ever to play for the Gophers?
And having him and the freshmen if we can get 22-30 minutes per game from the two of them and go smaller the other 18-10 that is very beneficial! It is called depth! Now we have two of them in Mpoyi and Kordel. Having size is a nice option. If you need a stop in a close game, getting a stop includes getting the rebound.
(841 day streak on Duolingo auf Deutsch, so don't mind the pidgin makeshift German)
