Malick Kordel Commits

Pretty Athletic for 7'2. Should work well with Niko's coaching

Rudy or Kordel. Who makes a 3 ptr first?
Would actually be a fun promotion. Everyone in the bldg gets a free something if one of them makes a 3.

Gophers need to work on the Ally-oop for the slam. Something we rarely see.
This got me thinking, when was the last time we had a tall and athletic post player?

Dawson was good, but certainly didn't play much above the rim.
Last year, we were rolling out a 6'7" C.

Now we have two of them in Mpoyi and Kordel. Having size is a nice option. If you need a stop in a close game, getting a stop includes getting the rebound. That was tough for us last year.

Good question. Game has changed so much over the years. I'd say Oturu, but I never saw him as a true post player (of course, I'm 72 and as I said earlier, the days of big guys just posting up low are pretty much long gone). I thought Reggie Lynch was more the true post prototype. So, one of those two depending on what you want your post guy to do.

As for Kordel, he looks more athletic in his clips than Turner did so that's a step up. I think it's important to have a physical big on the roster if for nothing else to bang around the opponent's big even if it's just a few minutes a game.

You think he is betting on keeping these guys multiple years? Maybe, but that is super risky in this new world. You can develop but you also have to win enough while doing it, that it makes them want to stay and that it makes your boosters want to pay. I think he is gambling that he can get to the tournament next year with higher end talent that comes in a little raw. Maybe that is exactly what you mean...not sure.
Niko's definitely looking at guys with multiple years to play. No, you can't count on them staying, but if these high ceiling young players blow up we've got a better chance to retain them for less money, than to find similar skilled guys on the open market.

There's a good chance this our starting Center next season imo & not a long term developmental guy.

7"2" 275lbs, athletic & physical. He's a grown man who'll be 23 y/o next season & is ready to play.

He might foul out after 20 mins every game, but Grove proved he can give us 10+ quality minutes off the bench every night, JCJ can play that spot when we go small & Mpoyi might give us 5-10 mins a night.

I think what you've hit on is that the guys in that spot (other than JCJ) are going to be there to pass, screen, foul, and provide minutes. Anything other than that is a bonus.

I thought I'd toss out the write-up that Mich's SBNATION site did for Kordel when he was first on campus last year for them. If he can live up to the comments that he's a great offensive rebounder and a menace defensively, then we may have really filled a need in the lineup.

With how expensive bigs are it won't surprise me if Niko's strategy is to take guys with potential over production each year.

This might have to be the way for a while. Let the blue bloods/money teams recruit great prospects and then when they portal guys over the top of them, take the prospects. In years past it would have been hard for us to recruit guys like Grady and Kordel who had big offer lists to sign as frosh.
The key for Niko is to keep on retaining enough core guys where he is confident to take shots at high potential, but unproven guys. Coming into next year he has 5 guys, including Evans, who have been successful in his system already. Add Shinholster who is young yet and you have 6 who know it well.

We should be able to play a little tougher preseason schedule and have success, unlike last year when the whole team was new to the system and each other.

And having him and the freshmen if we can get 22-30 minutes per game from the two of them and go smaller the other 18-10 that is very beneficial! It is called depth!

I came across this video on my feed. Kordel These two guys are talking about practice video from last summer/early fall at Michigan. They got Kordel starting for Michigan...looking impressive.
I don't think they show the video they are watching...but they are very impressed by his potential.
Don't know what happened as time went on...?
Grady got hurt at Michigan....was Kordel healthy all year? I know the roster competition was insane
and so was the payroll....gotta play the higher priced guys. Curious if he could be amazing despite his inexperience. Kordel was evidently amazing on this day. Grove was....why not this guy?

I like his size, not just length, but he is also massive.
Not sure how he will fit the future rotation. Grayson Groves is likely the C next season. But, this gives is an option if needed.

(841 day streak on Duolingo auf Deutsch, so don't mind the pidgin makeshift German)
Das ist sehr gut fur das Amerikan.
