Transfer Portal 2026

Skim is reporting a B10 player is about to join the MAAC. That lines up with McCarthy visit unfortunately.

*she just predicted McCarthy to Fairfield

Yup Lana to Fairfield.
On to plan B. Wonder if playing closer to home was the main selling point? Unless we're out of money.

Well that’s a bummer, gotta think Coach P had a plan B. Size in the transfer portal is high in demand, but hopefully coaches can find one.

I wish I could know all the players the Gophers staff is in contact with. 😅

Good to know on Lana. I get the appeal of a good program close to home. I wonder if it was more that or just not the right fit with our team from the visit here.

McGill to Oklahoma State is out of nowhere to me! I know they’ve got some big donors too. Glad to see some SEC to Big 12 transfer of talent so it’s not just TCU buying conference championships uncontested.

We really need to fill the PG and post with players equal to or better than the productivity we got from Battle and Hart. If we only get serviceable backup players like Tonga and Glenn, we will regress next season. And expecting any freshman to contribute as Battle did last year is a huge stretch. What Battle brought to the team came with experience. We need to bring in talent and experience if we want to be back to the sweet 16.

This is correct. We don't have to panic but major holes remain.

Especially with the rest of the conference making moves and only getting better. Not nervous; but, am shocked we haven't seen more movement or interest after last years run. That environment at the sweet 16 was something special. It must be lack of money. However, I have no idea what is going on behind the scenes.

Agreed. Dawn P needs to step up her game. Tonga and Glenn type players are serviceable in reserve roles but not as replacements for Battle and Sophie.
Read some article from a MN sports writer Tony Liebert; I could have taken the si.com article wrong; but, it almost sounds like the Gophers are struggling in the portal and that most of the resources went to retaining our players. Again, I could be wrong but it was just how I took it.

Per Skim
Minnesota trying to get Merkle now they missed on McCarthy. Oklahoma also interested. Skim is not sure on the interest level of Merkle

Per Skim, Minnesota was recruiting Merkle and McCarthy at the same time

*makes me speculate did they want them both and McCarthy didn’t want to come off the bench. (Might be my coping, haha)

Glenn was a starter for and a valuable contributor to a Big 12 team that earned a spot in the Sweet Sixteen the year before she came here. For us she was one of those valuable players whose contributions don't always show up on the stat sheet each night. Great defense, speed and a confidence I think the rest of the team absorbed.

McCarthy would rather go to a school that most likely is always going to be a 1st round loser in the NCAA tournament (if they make it) than a Sweet 16 or better with her contribution? Cool story, Lana.

Mixed feelings about the Merkle interest. She is really slow. Coach P has mastered playing slow, and results matter most of all, but I would be a fan of playing faster. This year, the Gophers were 18th in conference play in pace of play (last year 14th out of 18; the year before 13th out of 14).

I wasn't ripping Glenn. She was a solid backup PG and provided valuable minutes for a Sweet 16 team. But if we'd just had Glenn as our starter and no Battle, we would not have had the season we just did. Hence we need to replace Battle with someone of her immediate abilities.

I wouldn't consider Tony Liebert to be a good source.

Merkle isn't ideal at all. She's not fit enough to play defense let alone 30 minutes a game.

With that said, it's not the end of the world if they cannot get someone better as long as the PG is high quality.

With Merkle, you need a quality backup who can run and play defense, though. The backup, may need to play more than Merkle in certain games.

She can put the ball in the hoop. She fits the style of play for Coach P.
Hart was great but I wouldn’t really call her fast either. Did she play more than 30 minutes a game?

They also have Woodson who they wanted to use at the 5 to go more quick small ball.

He's a good writer but all the portal potentials he's wrote about so far have been more wishful thinking. That said, I don't want him showing our coaching staff's hand either if he did know who they were talking to. But I don't think he does.

Woodson, Klick and Christian are options. Freshmen are options. Get a couple of the best transfers that fit and want to be Gophers and we will be ok. Bright shiny objects are not always the best route.
