Shula Added To Staff

You shop where the budget allows.
Do we know that is the case as a matter of fact?

I've read we rank middle to bottom middle of B1G in salaries, but it has also been reported that we aren't spending the full budget we have for coordinators.

Like NIL and what we're paying players, the default answer when something happens that seems strange is now - we don't have the money the other schools do.

That's a cop out. For a guy who has a slogan about changing your best, hiring below grade, and hoping they turn out, and giving them long leashes seems to be a "shoot for the ground and hope you miss" approach, with little upside.

I could be wrong but I don’t recall us ever ranking even middle of the conference for assistants salary pool, and that’s not because our head coaches have left money in the budget every year.

But also, I’m surprised this hire is catching so much flack, have you guys seen the resumes of the other four offensive analysts? Outside of something called Bill Legg the other three analysts have very limited experience.

It wasn't five years ago. But you keep saying it was.
You’re right I will shift that narrative from the closet to when he was an analyst which was up Until 2022. The point remains the same there’s probably not another P4f DC with as little experiences as our fella.

I'm not saying that what I've read is correct, I've seen a lot of things said, but the ones I referenced were from "reputable" sources (e.g., the Strib) which may be a guess (we're paying less for the current cooridinators than we paying coordinators before, therefore we're not spending to the budget) vs. a fact, but since facts and opinions carry equal weight in what passes (poorly) for Journalism these days or from Mr. PJ (I took a pay cut to come to Minnestoa) Fleck, in an offhand comment attributed to him in another story I read awhile back, that's why I asked if we knew it for a fact, which, I don't think we do. So maybe that's the reason.

I have no problem with the Shula hire and wonder if this is PJ finally admitting he could do well by listening to someone other than Greg (listen up guys, that's Bill Belichek speaking, to his team while a head coach in the NFL) Schiano.

The Limey hire, I'm not a big fan of.

Both of them are pulling from a bargain bin, and neither one of them will become a HC or OC/DC of a Power 4 Program again. The others you referenced were purchased from Temu, which comes with the expectation of being on the trash heap after 1/2 to one season of use....

He literally left money in the budget when replacing both coordinators.

In fairness, he may have been "over budget" with previous coordinators and did not have the OK to stay "over budget" when they left. We just don't know what is really going on, which makes it hard to figure out if the problem is with the Admin or the coach.

I get that, but was what he left enough to move us up the ladder much within the conference? Seems like we’ve ranked pretty low even when using the whole budget in the past.

The closet was 12 years ago when he was volunteering to get his start in coaching.

Let it go.

As has been noted many times here:
It's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimmies and Joes

In my opinion, this sentiment applies much more to defense than offense.

If you have a bunch of future NFL draft picks, you can just stay in base defense and react to whatever the offense does, with enough speed and sure tackling that it doesn't really matter. You get pressure on the QB without needing to blitz. You don't need special coverages. And so on.

On offense, it doesn't matter if you have an NFL All-Pro team, you can't just run fullback lead iso every play and score a TD on every snap of the ball. You have to have a strong scheme and a talented playcaller.

The offensive schemes and playcaller need got covered up a bit having Mo in the back field. Definitely could have had a couple more wins in 2022 to complement his performance.

Interesting. Can’t hurt, might help. 😊

“Sources: University of Minnesota plans to hire Mike Shula as senior offensive assistant, as he’ll work with the quarterbacks and offensive staff. Shula is the former head coach at Alabama who brings more than a quarter century in the NFL, including OC at three franchises.”

Pete Thamel on X
Good.

We need an offensive coordinator. Haven't had one for about 5 years...
