BREAKING: Coyle Hires Brett Larson as New Gophers Coach

Tanks for posting. Sounds good to me. My only objection to anything he said was that he "wasn't going to blow things up." If he would have added "except the D" then I'd have no problem with what he said. :)
This was just slightly better than milktoast! I WANT him to blow things up, this team just finished an abysmal year and slight improvements as he said do not make things any better. They are still losing lots of games, just by a smaller margin. I thought that May had a better intro to the women's team than this one which does absolutely nothing to make me feel like he was the coach that we need.

The thing I think is hilarious is David Carle vouching for Larson. like that's great but how did that convo go?

Hi David, I know you won't come so can you give a recommendation?
Or
Hi David, would you like to coach the Gophers? No? Okay can you give a recommendation?

haha
i think its that Carle called on his behalf. I don't know why that's hilarious. Happens all the time for someone to call and vouch for someone

Maybe Larson listed Carle as a reference on his resume…

He’s bringing a great group of assistants that are all known as top recruiters. Excited for next season.
I want to be excited as well but if the best we can say is we hired the guy with the best assistant coaches not sure that alone does it.

Not saying it will or won’t but you would never want to see what appears to be a hiring mess associated with one of your top candidates.
Curious, who do you see that says this was a 'hiring mess'? I must not be following the right people.

The recent Gophers 101 podcast with Judd Zulgad does a pretty good job of highlighting the concerns with the search and the process, or complete lack of process, with both hockey hires.

I know it’s tough to trust a guy on a Gopher forum, but I’m pretty confident that the things I’ve posted on here that I heard from multiple sources about the search are true. It wasn’t a well ran search for a program that has one of the absolute best jobs in the country. But, I’m done criticizing Larson now until the first season plays out. It’s time to focus on what he can do for us in the offseason.

That’s exactly my point as well, the process is in question. If we hired the next Herb Brooks or the next Glen Sonmor, or something in between, that will just need to play out.

Thanks, I found it. I'll listen on the way home. Looking at their previous podcasts, I don't see one that is titled with anything about Gopher Hockey. I highly doubt they are tapped in. They are your 'Speculation' leader.

Any idea if anyone ever reached out to Barr? That would've been my first pick but IDK if he was interested or if they even tried.

Judd has hockey credentials and credibility.

Take it with a grain of salt but Mike Max said the extent of the coaching search was Coyle having two (2) phone interviews, one (1) each with Larson and Potulny.
that would be interesting. Lou Nanne said he was there for some of the interviews so maybe they did this all via zoom/conference calls (Coyle was on the road).

What I don’t get is, if Coyle was so confident in the process and his choice of Larson then why not say one of two things. We did an extensive search and Larson came out on top or have the guts to say we felt from the start Larson might be the best fit for the job and he proved to be. Either way just own what you did.

Who knows what is taking place behind the scenes. We're now micromanaging every move. I'm on board with cheeseburgerphil26 as to his comments. Time to move on and stop bitching.

This is why the “Coyle was forced to hire Ben Johnson against his will” claims that say he could’ve never been that lazy and incompetent in his hiring process, give me pause. This appears to be his hiring process. Something about smoke yielding fire.

Ummm, not ready to let Coyle off the hook so easily. This isn’t Bowling Green hockey we’re talking about. I think it’s more than fair to question how we got here.

As others have said, can we see if Larson turns out okay first? If he wins three nattys in 4 years, are we still going to be mad at Coyle? If the program has a few more seasons like this last one, then I'll really be upset with the process. Until then it does no good to keep bitching about it.

Because the AD gets paid a lot of money to get this right and it affects the next 4+ years of Gopher hockey. The least he can do is conduct a thorough search, from all indications this wasn't. I hope Larson does a good job and think it's certainly possible that he does but it'd be in spite of Coyle's efforts (or lack thereof).

I think we can evaluate how the search was done independently of what Larson does in the future. I don't think anyone is cheering against Larson.

I want Larson to succeed just as much as anyone. I do however think the fans and the program deserved an honest and thorough search for the best coach. If it happened then why is it so difficult to explain it?

I don't disagree, but what do you want? An apology from Coyle? It does not one bit of good to complain and speculate about it now. It will never fully come to light. And do we know that he didn't t get the best coach? I don't know that. Larson is the freaking Gopher coach now. He has my support 100%, and I am not going to spend a minute looking backward until the on-ice results dictate that.

I think the search was lazy from Coyle. I also think that we have voiced that enough now and it’s time to support Larson and wait and see how he does. In some ways he deserves the benefit of the doubt and he seems like a super passionate coach who wears his heart on his sleeve and won’t take any bullshit. I like that. Now it’s just time to put in some major work in the offseason.

Has nothing to do with supporting the team or coach so don’t insinuate that I don’t. It is about expecting people to be accountable and responsible for their job. If you don’t care or feel Coyle did a great job obviously that’s your right. Many people don’t and that will manifest itself in a bad way if the team has a bumpy year. Larson won’t get much slack from people who don’t even understand how he got the job. He has my support until he proves otherwise. Coyle has no credibility.

I disagree with your last sentence. Coyle hired Fleck, Medved, Plitzuweit, and Motzko. 4 damn good hires. He’s got plenty of credibility.
