BREAKING: Coyle Hires Brett Larson as New Gophers Coach

That's probably why he got the job. But those guys are all basically nobodies.
i would go with that he's from MN, he has recruited MN, knows what the "value" of the M is in the state (aka makes Lou Nanne happy), and has shown he is at least willing to go out of state for guys are the reasons.

I think if admin is willing to pony up the resources to help get him there, a lot of people could make this job work. That part is the part I worry more about and is why I hope like hell those that pushed towards Larson are willing to dump the money in to make that happen, not do these fucking stupid revenue share meetings that Coyle has his coaches sitting at that he wouldn't stop talking about at the Monday press conference

On those CHL guys, I'm very ok if 0 of them come to MN. We can do vastly better than that. But at least he should know the leagues

As a St. Cloud State fan. I believe Larson is a decent guy and a good coach but it really surprises me. He went to the u when he really has done nothing Only real good years were with Bob's players and being a minor league team in St. Cloud. I know it's harder to win, but maybe you could leave us alone for a while and stop stealing our coaches. Find your own losers now we have to go out and find another one. The game is turning to Total money for players and coaches and unfortunately I believe it's going to ruin the game soon. It will be total halves and have nots and the fun will be gone when 2/3 of the teams can't compete. Obviously certain schools especially Big 10 schools have huge advantages already and now it's 10 times worse you can offer money for players where we have Subway coupons

Not a hire that excites me, but I will say, a few people I know who know people who know Larson well do think highly of him, and it is widely believed that the situation in St. Cloud is extremely difficult right now for any coach to succeed.

I'll give him a chance with my support. Let's go Brett.
30-40-2 record for past two years. Can this be correct? Coyle is pure genius. Not.

That was good.

How is his selection being spun by those responsible? Have they even bothered to say why he was the best person for the job?

Given Coyle is probably not going to say who was on the committee, you are probably stuck until Lou is on kfan next

One can probably guess who many of the 6-7 people are, but Coyle usually doesn’t say much

Irrelevant? Already? We played in the national championship game three years ago. We won or tied for the Big Ten championship in three of the past five years, including last year. And now we're irrelevant. That's a really quick fall from grace.
With only 60 teams in D1-haven’t won a natty in over 20 years- ranked what? In the 40’s this season, yes. I would say pretty friggn’ close to irrelevant.

That's what happens when you have no connection to the CHL and no real NIL money compared to the top programs.
Gopher hockey is far from irrelevant. It is the program at the states flagship school in the state of Hockey. We're not currently a contender for a title but... irrelevant? LMAO

I will trade you back Larson for a SubWay coupon. Deal?

Look at it as an opportunity to hire Cashman. Then we can hire him in 3 years.

Like others have mentioned, St. Cloud State doesn't seem like an easy place to win at. The school already cut football and as a fan of another NSIC school, I can say their basketball program is very inconsistent these last several years. The university has also had to cut many academic programs and enrollment's fallen over the last 15 years or so from about 15,000 to 7,000.
I don't think there's enough NIL in the world for me to want to live in St. Cloud. And like you, I'm a Moorhead State grad so that's saying something.

I think you might be surprised who might compete. Some of those tiny NE liberal arts schools have a LOT of money and if they want to fund hockey in a big way, there are very wealthy alumni that can do so as opposed to large land grant schools that have to fund football teams.

the fact that he's not allowed to call the MN HS hockey tourney any longer but still weighs in on these kinds of decisions is certainly a move from Coyle.

Love Lou and all he's done for hockey in this state, but yeah he should not be sitting in on interviews.
Did Lou get fired? I assumed he just retired from it.

i believe he was asked to step down. His last couple years calling it were... tougher listens. And I think they wanted to avoid a possible controversy if he said something wrong, etc. hurting his legacy

With our resources Larson could excel here. He did great at SCSU prior to NIL and he's had a pathetic budget to work with since then. I think it will be hard for anyone to do well at SCSU. Let's not forget he took them to the national title game. I know it was Bob's players but it's still a major accomplishment.

Let's relax and see what happens.

I doubt he’s looking for easy. NCHC, compete with the best.
i am sure he'd love to go to a place with no money, the same salary, and in St Cloud as opposed to on the east coast with a top tier education near the place he played at and in a place his wife is from. Makes perfect sense.

Everyone isn’t looking for the easy road like you Skippy. Some have bigger aspirations and want challenges. Some actually want to compete against the best. Some don’t.

With a name like Larson in MinneSooota, the Gophers shouldn't go wrong.

Mankato is a better fit in the NCHC than St. Cloud at this point. Better program, better and larger school that's growing, nicer city.
That may be but it’s not reality and isn’t going to be changing anytime soon.

i would imagine they will try to hire Nick Oliver.

1 championship game appearance in the last 11 years, I'd say that's kind of irrelevant. 2 Frozen fours in the last 11 years, I guess that's kind of relevant. But no Natty's, and really only getting close once in the last 11 years makes me say that. For Minnesota to be relevant they have to win it all occasionally, and have a run. Factor in this last season, MN hasn't been a threat to anyone outside of once in over a decade.

It will take time to process the initial disappointment. We thought we were in the filet mignon line but we were handed a tuna fish sandwich. We may grow to really like and appreciate the tuna fish…

Lol no, it's your turn. We'll have a new one for you in about 6 years or so
