Future Gopher Coach Discussion

On Monday, Coyle said he and his search committee have interviewed “numerous people” across the country.

“We feel like we have a very, very good pool of candidates that we’re talking to, that we’re still vetting, that we’re working our way through,” Coyle said. "

Apparently numerous now means two, kinda maybe three since he spent 15 minutes with Raboin asking if he still liked North Dakota cuisine.

yeah you could tell when Nanne was on Barriero that they'd already decided. classic we want full transparency and a national search and coyle just took what some alumni/boosters told him and went with it

Cullen will be a very interesting assistant to have (has been rumored). They need someone to fill that GM role. Matt is not going to be trekking the country to recruit in rinks so if he's taking one role, you need to have someone else filling the others. He will attract talent however through name recognition which will help, and he has deep ties in the the HS/Jr hockey/NTDP world

Take his three kids and at least three other of the top Moorhead kids coming out and whatever, this is fine. Once his kids leave he'll leave the job anyways.

Everyone is.

Look for them to maybe compete in 2028-29 if and only if they have both the good Cullens on the roster.
way way way way too negative. you will know how serious he is towards next year in about 2 weeks and I'd guess it will be pretty serious. unfortunate that Gross already signed.
F
Mooney, Ziemer, Moore, Hendrickson, Moe add Burnevik, Hall plus incoming Kvanicka, Cullen, Cullen, Humphreys. Have some internal guys and additional SCSU guys and add 1-2 more portal and you have a F group that can compete

D (he's going to need to work his ass off)
There are a couple guys who are reasonable options at SCSU (Henricks probably the best). Add Grimes and Harper.

G were fine but obviously need to add

Again, I'm not in love with the hire, but zero reason to call it dead on arrival for multiple years unless he chooses to go that route. Based on everything that's been said, that is not the expectation and I don't think he'll get the leash to ship years off

He can't fix the D in one offseason even with Henricks. Look how good the Michigan teams and PSU are. And they will reload again. You'll be shooting for about 4th in conference next season.

I don't think anyone other than Fersch could have maybe had them contending next season and only if he somehow brought both Shaugabays (and even then the D...).

And with Larson's track record, I think year 2 won't be contending either. That's why I said year three.

So if Ben Barr has a better next three seasons than Larson at the U, what is the excuse for Larson? Seems like a pretty fair head to head to me if you spread it over three years. Given the resources Larson should have that Maine doesn't.

So maybe this thread will live on as my preferred option for the NEXT coach.

all depends on who's available (and what resources are at hand) as you well know.

Lots of guys up there in the central scouting rankings available (Rudolph, Carels, Dupont, etc).

Took me a while to check in today. Well... I admit that I was wrong. Thought the Raboin thing was a screen. The only thing from a search perspective that makes any sense to me now is that people were in Coyle's ear from the beginning, and there was a lot of inside support for Larson. Based on what I know this wouldn't have been my choice either. But that was yesterday. Now I'm excited about a new chapter. I am excited about the idea of having Matt Cullen involved. I'm excited if this means all the Cullen players are here too. And if we can get a few more of that Moorhead bunch... would love it. Anyway, starting today, I am a big Larson fan. Coach, prove all of us 'experts' wrong. Quickly build this program into a national contender again. Bring it home. I'm excited to see what unfolds. Go Gophers!!

I am on board if the entire Cullen family wants to come on board. maybe Mrs Cullen can handle recruiting if Matt doesn't want to.

think she's pretty active with Cully's kids from what I recall

Too early in the morning for the rah, rah stuff for me. I am sure I will get there. Hopefully he makes a splash on the talent side early to get the crowd into it.

If he brings in Cullen and Cory Laylin as assistants... I can get behind that quickly.

Great, since the U did not hire Bonin's preferred choice, we get to listen to him bitch for another 5 years. Because we all know he will not give Larson a chance to succeed.

Based on what? There is nothing Hastings has accomplished that Bob has not.
Just took WI to Frozen Four for the first time in 16 years. He’s still coaching, Bob is not. I think he’d still be coaching at MN if he was hired instead of Motzko.

Also, I think what Hastings did at Mankato was more impressive than what Motzko did at SCSU.
So he’s doing what Bob already did twice here. Also while what he did at Mankato yo might see as more impressive than why Bob did at SCSU but at the time Bob was hired at the U Hastings had a grand total of 0 NCAA tournament wins in Mankato.

Just took Wisconsin to the title game. Unless you put Wisconsin on the same level as MN, that’s also more impressive. What he just did is definitely more impressive than what Bob did at MN.

Still more impressive. Lost to UMD by 1 and they won it all.

If he pulls it off you can absolutely start discussing him as a better coach than Motzko.
