Future Gopher Coach Discussion

A lot of you are in denial, why would the Augustana AD post “our coach now and for years to come” right after it came out that he turned it down lol. Just pray that it’s not Larson.

A lot of concerning reports about the search, doesn’t necessarily mean everything is true but where there’s smoke there’s usually fire.

Haha I don’t live there just went to school there, don’t disagree it ain’t great but the athletic department knows what they’re doing, does Minnesota’s?

Also, lmao what planet do you live on? People see what’s on the news, and the news coming out of Minneapolis over the past 6 years has been horrible, might not be true but that’s what we see not living there
Listen, you can say whatever you want about Minneapolis, but let’s look at the receipts.

In 1863, Alabama sent its most 'grizzled' elite shock troops—1,200 to 1,500 strong—to finish off the Union at Gettysburg. They were stopped dead in their tracks by 262 'lumberjacks' from Minnesota who charged them with nothing but bayonets and some axes they brought with from choppin' all that wood.

That tiny group of Minnesotans didn't just delay them; they 'bitch-slapped' the momentum right out of the Confederacy’s most feared brigade. And while the South has spent the last 160 years asking nicely for their battle flags back, Minnesota’s official response—from governors of both parties—has remained a consistent: 'Why? We won'.

Maybe your 'news' just can't get that image out of it's head. What kind of lunatic savages live here? But just remember: you ain't gettin' those flags back. Ever. ;)

Did i miss something? Augustana AD tweeted about Raboin staying. Has Raboin said anything?

What’s he supposed to say?

Raboin said, “I’m excited to lead Augustana hockey into the future.”

What’s he supposed to say when he’s flat out asked by the Strib about the job opening? It was a very vague statement clearly leaving the door open. His team’s season isn’t over yet.

He was asked by the Strib. He had to answer with something.
No, the AD was asked by no one, the AD tweeted this out on his own right when it came out that he declined it. I wish I had as much blind faith as some of you.

Exactly. Thats what coaches always say. Something like that. I think he will be our next coach. But it also could be that we poached WMU, and never offered it to Raboin. Unlikely but it makes way more sense than Raboin turning it down.

Which is part of why it would be braindead of coyle to contact and try interview anyone right now. Wait 3 effin days and do things face to face

Everyone take a deep breath. This is all going to be fine. Let things play out.

Don't forget about the knife-wielding Polar Bears that inhabit our state. They could have easily kicked some Alabama ass that day. (IYKYK)

I know it wasn’t an interview.

Raboin left Minnesota as an assistant 3 years ago for this exact moment. To get head coaching experience and then succeed Motzko as our head coach.
You just said Raboin was asked by the Strib. I’m not talking about Raboin. I’m talking about Augustana’s AD posting that he’s their coach now and for the future. He posted that right when it came out that Raboin declined the Gopher job. This all happened like 2 hours ago. If that’s not a sign he’s staying at Augustana I don’t know what is.

I have absolutely no idea if Raboin has any interest and I have no idea if the search is a dumpster fire or not.

That said, right not, Augustana absolutely needs to stay the course and appear like a united front with stability.

Lets assume that there is mutual interest between Raboin and the U (and Augustana's AD is aware).
  • Raboin absolutely does not want to seem like he is looking around. What if he doesn't get the job? Now all of his recruits, all of the coaches recruiting against him, and all of his players know he is looking around. It's not good for the program.

Lets assume that there is NOT mutual interest.
  • Then the tweet means what it implies. He is going to be back and he's agreed to a deal or something.

My entire point is that the tweet is meaningless. It's exactly what you would want to put out in either scenario. Does that mean I think the search is going well? No clue. I'm just saying that tweet is pretty meaningless.

Well, the timing of it coming out right when multiple Gopher hockey reporters received info that Raboin declined, is pretty telling I’d say.

That could certainly be. I will be interested to see if everything holds true a couple days after Augustana's season ends and he can exhale. A normal human being will get swept up in this moment with Augustana (see NOT Lane Kiffin), so I'm not sure I trust a whole lot of what is said until their season ends.

Either that or he's not interested which would be weird.

Perception? Haha who cares?
It doesn't matter for you. Everyone likes what they like.

However, perception absolutely matters when you are trying to recruit talent. There are people who love Bentonville, Arkansas but Walmart has to drastically overpay people to move there (and still have trouble recruiting) because of the perception.

Solid advice. Lots of pearl clutching and hand wringing going on. Maybe at least hold the outrage until we know who the coach actually will be…

Listen, I have zero idea if Raboin has interest or not, but for those saying "well he and the AD said he's happy so he's obviously out" do you live under a rock or in lala land? This happens all of the time with coaches players and literally everyone involved in college athletics now. Troy's head coach said all he was focused on was his team at the tourney, they lose 8 hours later he's got a new job at Georgia Tech, you think that all happened in 8 hours? Elijah Hawinks said he was coming beck to the gophers, weeks later he backed out for a better opportunity. You don't have to like it or agree with it, but it's reality. Again, maybe he really does have no interest, but these statements mean zero.

In football and basketball we've got 1,000% committed players that never materialize. I wouldn't put much stock in any tweet these days.

Again, it’s not just the tweet, it’s the multiple Gopher hockey reporters saying their sources said he declined the job. Before that tweet even came out. Can’t ignore that.

I think that’s fair. Maybe Coyle figures it out that the remaining two candidates are not qualified enough and that he needs to pivot and actually try to do this “nationwide” search thing he claimed. But if it’s Larson or Potulny, it’ll be a blood bath in these threads lol
