***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT OREGON IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Shinholster's dunk will go on his highlight reel. He will not speak of the two airballs he launched (making Grove look like Steph Curry).
Asuma just needs to tweak his shot in the off-season and get the ball on the fingertips instead of coming off his palm. Watching Asuma's progression under Niko has been great. Niko doesn't have any elite ball players, but they all know their roles and their expectations. I am very impressed with what Niko is doing with his "dirty seven."
Yeah....on paper it shouldn't work but night in and night out these guys compete and even without a true superstar or any depth they find a way to be in games.

The final record won't be great but there are a lot of positives to build on going forward.

Every time I can't stay up for a late West Coast game, they win (dating back to last year).

Just watched the replay. It was really fun to see them peak late in the 2nd half.

Take care of business against Rutgers this weekend, and it's almost guaranteed we won't have to play on the terrible Tuesday of the BIG10 tourney.

Pretty excited to officially add Grove to the list of guys Niko needs to lock down for next year. Nice little nucleus forming!

Per ESPN "Minnesota leads the all-time series, 8-3."

Not something I would expect.

I keep waiting for the game when both Cade and Bobby get hot. Seems like it’s always one or the other. Mostly Bobby lately. I wonder if Cade’s ankle is still bothering him, or if it’s all in his head now. He dhot so blistering hot earlier in the year that I never expected him to airball an open three.

I think the Oregon game really shows how good of a coach Niko is. It was kind of a surprise that JCJ was not going to be able to go on Saturday and the team looked confused and out of sync at times. For Oregon, Niko now knows that JCJ is probably not going to play, he had three days to work with the guys to get their assignments down and how the offense was going to run. He decides to go with the 'Steel 6' and the rest is history.
Really looking forward to when Niko has a full compliment of players to run his stuff.

As a random question for someone who doesn't watch them outside of when the Gophers play them, why is Oregon so bad?

Don't know a ton about them but they are missing one of their top players in Jackson Shelstad who has been out since late December.

A lot of it was MN effective zone defense made them look worse. Oregon was supposed to be pretty good according to the "experts", but I think the team underperformed slightly, even before the Jackson Shelstad injury. Losing starting point guard has been tough for them (NO SYMPATHY from me), as he was the floor General playing 35+min, high assist rate, and shot 3's pretty well. Worked well with Bittle, who seems a bit lost these days.
It makes me appreciate Niko's coaching even more, because the system MN has is more of a plug and play with next man up.

Niko had a great plan for Bittle. We didn't have the height to battle him but as soon as he touched the ball he was surrounded. He got a few easy looks but he also looked really uncomfortable most of the game.

That combined with their entire team being ice cold from behind the arc was enough to get the well deserved W.

A nitpick, but I would suggest that Minnesota's zone is more of a 2-2-1 with the lower two fanning out to the 3 point circle. I think the vulnerable points in our zone are the high/low middle and the deep corner threes. If a team can exploit that then I think Niko's zone is made ineffective. But, that 2 for 20 shooting display made the Gophers zone look like a throwback to Syracuse.

And when Bittle was blocked by Langston early in the game, that's when I decided I was probably going to watch the whole thing. It was just a clean, straight up 6' 4" guy blocking a 7 footer.

When you're deemed the only scoring option, the other coach is going to try to take you away and try to make the rest of the team beat you.

Cade is facing a ton of pressure, and if you watch him off the ball, he was to work his ass off to even see a good shot.

I do think Cade is still a bit hobbled. He's far less aggressive on offense than he was earlier in the year......and right now......we have fewer options due to injuries.

I wonder what Asuma’s 3 pt shooting %’s are if you take catch and shoot, vs shot fake, dribble, and shoot? Especially to the left?

speaking of 3 point shooting....and i know i am nitpicking a little because that was a fun game to stay up for........but i still cant get over Asuma just chucking threes like he does. i selfishly want to see a little better shot selection from him. Hes shot 30 more 3's than Tyson, and they have both made the same amount
and i know, with 6 capable players available somebody needs to shoot them. but just waiting for the coffee to kick in this morning

anyway. fun game. fun win.
and good for Groves, kid just simply plays his butt off
I don't know, maybe I'm watching different games but Asuma rarely takes bad shots IMO....

He is often left to try to create something with the shot clock running out and that may lead to some of those misses. There are very few guys right now who can create their own shot (especially with JCJ out).

As for Tyson, he needs to shoot MORE....he passes up shots that he should be taking. I appreciate the unselfishness, but on this team, he needs to let it fly.

I look forward to Niko having a healthy roster.....when he gets time to bring in his type of players, I think his offense will be a thing of beauty to watch.

They have a ton of injuries as well...
Shelsted (sp?) is an all-B10 type player. They also lost another lost another big guy for the season. Biddle has been hurt and missed a bunch. I think they were down 3 starters against the Gophers....but I still don't think they've been hurt as bad as the Gophers.
On another note, I couldn't believe it took Altman an entire half to figure out a high/low offense against our zone. They had 3 guys bigger on the court at one time than Groves but they continued to just jack up 3's.

You could definitely see Grove's goalie skills on display last night.

The only players on the roster that he didn't bring in are Asuma, Grove, and Shinholster so I think he must of tried to bring in "his type of players." Unfortunately, injured players aren't anyone's type of players.

A bright spot from all this injury misfortune is that the seven players we likely have for the rest of the year (I'm assuming that JCJ will be able to go again in the near future) have played together a lot now and probably are more in-sync than they might have been with a full roster. The biggest bright spot is the continuing progress of Grayson Grove who may not have had this much of an opportunity without the injuries.

Anecdotally, he seems to make the tougher ones. Like Sundance: "Can I move?"

I'm not sure I've seen a high major team look like they don't know how to play basketball as Oregon looked many times last night.

14 assists and 12 turnovers.

Altman and Oregon have gotten hit by the injury bug, but I cannot believe how bad they now look. Not having a playable backup pg has really hit this team with Shelstad going down. It reminds me of Tubby kicking off Devoe J., and was it Nolen getting hurt, and he was forcing Blake to try and run the team, and ripping on him for not doing it well.

Note to coaches, always have multiple players who can play multiple positions, especially PG!

If I coached Oregon and you just got outrebounded by the very undersized Gopher team, when your bigger at almost all positions, and probably more athletic, there would have been lakers/killers run last night.

Yep, but still impressive to go on the road with a 6 man rotation and beat a big ten team. Especially when your opponents best player is a 7'0" senior center and your team has 1 healthy big who is a 6'9" redshirt freshman. :)

Great win. But Oregon just sucks. A ton. Zero redeeming qualities. Shitty at all things.

Perhaps a rebounding drill or two would be better than just straight up running. :)
Unless you were going for the Herb Brooks approach...AGAIN

Yeah....I didn't phrase that the right way. I meant to say that he's going to have more time to assemble a roster. I would think a lot of recruits would want to play in his offense. And let's face it, what did he have to sell here when he took the job other than playing time? More than anything, the future is bright.

I think Oregon's current roster shows that 4-5 stars aren't better than 2-3 stars if the 4-5 stars don't play hard.
