Our field goal kicker lost us two games alone last year. So have we taken care of it this year?. Fleck says our new senior transfer kicker is unreal. Whats his track record? Never even attempted a field goal at Michigan. We are banking on him? Or is newcomer Daniel Jackson that good that we dont need any help? Well if he is that good he should have been kicking last year. Come on Fleck and new special teams coach. Take care of the problem or its like we are starting the season with two losses already figured in.

What two games did our kicker lose us last year?

I am a little surprised Fleck didn't bring in a proven kicker to battle Jackson. I agree that Fleck must either no something about the Michigan transfer most don't know or he really believes in Jackson. I agree, that needs to be a very high priority this SPRING.

Arguably Northwestern and Cal could have been won with good placekicking.

Our placekicker went 0-1 against Cal in a game we lost by 13.

I agree that NW could have been won with better placekicking. We also won 3 other games, partially due to a placekicking advantage. Purdue, Michigan State, and Rutgers were one score wins with the below kicking stats:

Minnesota: 4-6
Opponents: 4-9

I also want better placekicking, but I think some folks need to appreciate that we were really good (or lucky) in one score games last year.

The point is instead of kicking longer field goals we chose to go for the first down as the year ran down. Cal scored that last TD when the game had pretty much been decided.

Defense was responsible for the Northwestern loss. Giving up 38 and points and 500+ yards to team that routinely struggled to get to 20 points takes the blame from the kicker.

Koi was the #1 culprit in the Cal game. He single-handedly put the team in some horrible positions with his special teams blunders.

Denaburg was good inside 40 and hit his extra points. He was a mess beyond 40 and the coaches were foolish to try him on some of the kicks that they did because he was so unreliable once you got beyond that 40 yard distance.

He took more crap then he deserved but hopefully we are able to upgrade the position for 2026.

Impossible to go back and say what games were won/lost with kicking. But what I'm certain of is that our lack of a FG kicking threat beyond 40 yards greatly impacted our offensive philosophy and flexibility when we got into that area between the 30-45 yard lines.

Yep. After NW the board wanted the DC’s head

This thread is funny because giving up 38 points to northwestern is being blamed on our kicker.
I mean the defensive performance doesn't change the fact that Danenburg missed two critical field goals, including a 40 yarder that was an inexcusable miss. As well as the overall thought that kicking was a significant liability last year.

Based on what some are saying in this thread he has not taken as much crap as he deserved. Good inside 40 (arguably) and making extra points is a pretty low bar for a B10 scholarship kicker.

EDIT: For that matter he had multiple misses within 40 yards. Why anyone is defending the guy is beyond me.

We absolutely were good/lucky in one score games last year, and kicking deserves none of the credit for it.

Agreed!

But it doesn’t mean he cost the team the game. Plenty of other players and moments factored into that.

13 out of 18 Big Ten teams missed multiple kicks inside of 40 or missed an extra point last year.

How about this? All other things being equal, the Gophs would have won at least one and possibly two more games if we had what many teams in the B1G have: a kicker who is reliable from 50 and in. PJ’s conservative style leads to a lot of tight, one score games. Teams who play a lot of tight one score games can prosper or stumble based on just few plays, often FG attempts (or shying away from attempts).
