I had a thread about this about a month ago but it was way too much based on who our new head coach is going to be.

Now we know that Kill will run quite a bit of spread-like formations. I really think the staff will use Bennett at WR quite a bit next season. The guy doesn't have perfect size or even speed for the WR position, but we are so thin there next year (with Gray being a QB and Stoudermire being a CB). We have McKnight, and two decent players who are coming off injuries (Allen and Green) and then we are pretty thin. It'd be nice if Victor Kiese could step up and AJ Barker will be ok. Cameron Wilson, hopefully, can do a little too.

However, we don't have any depth behind Allen, Green and McKnight and Bennett will be in a spot where he might not see a ton of carries next season as he will be be in the mix with Eskridge, Kirkwood, Wright (and maybe even Edwards).

I think that I would prefer to see Bennett moved to WR than Stoudermire moved back to WR. Stoudermire looked like a solid CB and he just didn't look right at WR (to me). I think we would lose a lot more with Stoudermire moving back to offense than we would by having Bennett move to WR.

I agree, especially the last paragraph.

Mcknight
Allen
Green
Barker/Bennett <-- bennett also used as 3rd down back.

is the way I think Kill would go

Green may never play again. He has a degenerative knee problem. He got a medical for this last season, but it doesn't look good.

That's terrible. I hope he's doing well in school. Best wishes for him.

Stop with the Bennett to WR posts. He's not a WR in any way. He's a good RB who catches the ball well out of the backfield. How about he stays at RB? I don't think we're as deep at RB as people think.

Bennett is banged up too much at RB. It's probably best for his health to be a WR. We should have 3 serviceable backs next year between Eskridge, Kirkwood, Wright/Edwards. We already know Kirkwood can play which gives us two backs. One of Wright/Edwards should be able to step up and fill any other gaps.

Plus if we run the ball a ton, Bennett would be an upgrade in blocking at WR.

+1. In no way shape or form is Bennett a WR.

He's going to be running pass routes whether you like it or not. He was already doing that this past season and will continue to do so. He didn't/won't line-up as a wr 100% of the time, but he did/will on occassions. We are very thin at WR and will have to go with two TE sets a lot as well. I for one liked the two TE sets a lot at the end of the season. Helped the running game a ton and helped Lair a lot as well.

A RB lined up at WR is very common and far different than doing so full time. Bennett is 5'9" 210 and not very fast. We need to develop the wide outs we already have on the roster. Having this many players switching positions needs to stop. Especially when they are juniors and seniors. I like our TEs and think we should use them as you point out.

Bennett is going to be a senior and has played RB his entire life. Do you really think moving him WR is in the best interest of the player or the team? Do you think it's so easy to become a WR that you can take a kid that has never played the position before in his life and move him there in one off-season? Do you think Bennett wants to make that move for his senior year?

Bennett COULD move to WR for next season, but he won't be any good at it.

Bennett catches the ball well and has a nice burst, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him lined up in the slot in some formations. I don't know how well he'd do as a full-time WR. I don't know enough about Kill's offense to form and informed opinion, but Bennett has some skills that lend themselves to work well in certain situations.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a couple of January-grad JUCO WRs get offers.

Great JUCO Wrs rip it up at Minnesota.:D:cry:

Here is an idea...

Why not let Coach Kill and his staff evaluate the players that they have and let THEM put their returning players in the positions and situations that they believe will do the most for the team! I think that is one of the strengths of Coach Kill and his staff. I have complete trust that they will help the individual players to be in positions and schemes to best help the team. That is one of the keys for year number one of the Coach Kill Era. That will translate into more wins in the first season. That is what everyone wants isn't it? Not like a coach coming in thinking he has a "throw away" season to install "HIS" offense. Coach kill will honor the seniors and juniors who are on the team by putting them in a position to win every single game they "would...should...or could..." possibly win in 2011! Go Gophers!

If we have to use Bennett as a WR we're in serious trouble.

We have just an abominable record with Juco WR's. I've been trying to figure it out for years. Paris Hamilton and Hayo Carpenter were both supposed to be the second coming of Jerry Rice and neither of them did a thing while here. Too bad...

I'm sure Bennett will line up in the slot a few times (bubble screens/put him in motion for the read option) but not full time. By the way what happened to all the guys that hate the spread?

This. I'd like to see him in the backfield most of the time, but he could motion out of the backfield to the slot or just line up there periodically.

I like Bennett as a running back so I wouldn't want to see him switch full time. That said, I do like our stable of backs for the future. It's a position where you can't have too much depth as it's not unheard of for a team's top 2-3 guys all go down with injuries.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Kill and the staff will do. However, that doesn't mean we can't discuss the pros and cons of what some of those changes might be, right?

Are you saying you're opposed to people forming their own opinions?

That's what I think they could do with Bennett as well. He won't be moved to WR 100% of the time, but could line up at the slot from time to time. Maybe have him come in motion and run/fake the end around with him as well. He can do a lot of of things, and that should be a good thing for Kill's offense.

NIU ran some Wildcat so this should happen.

"fantasy stuff" smacks, imho. And, I have seen what happens on these boards. Pretty soon, the "fantasy camp" starts getting really ticked off at the coach and anyone else who doesn't agree with their "fantasy take..." on players and coaching matters. Then, the mobbers and bashers start mobbing and bashing and before you know it, a full-scale civil war about a player or coach breaks out.

We do NOT live in a pretend world josh. The Coach and his staff will call the shots. The physical condition of the players will play a factor and younger players and players who may transfer in might possible play into the equation at a later point in time.

I was ONLY presenting my opinion and that is that the Coach and his staff will decide all these things. IF you want to argue about my right to present an opinion, that's just fine josh. Knock yourself out. I've said all I intend to say about this issue in this thread. But, I am forever going to come down on the side of keeping it real and in reminding people that the Coach and his staff will call the shots. I will say what I think. Have a problem with that?

Now, have a very nice day josh.

I can't find where Josh was being rude or forcing his opinion as fact but whatever.

Bennett will run the ball. Bennett will catch the ball. Bennett will line-up as the lone back, behind the fullback, in the slot, as a true wide out. In other words; he will continue to do all the things he did last season because that is the kind of back he is.

Someone is being a little dramatic. The Gray WR or QB civil war just got out of hand.

Just to make sure I understand you. We are not to debate or have conversations over potential position changes or strategy because it may not be what the coach wilil decide? So we should stay silent and let him call the shots?

Well, Wren, I believe that "macturi" and "prexy b" call their own shots in their job as well...so you should probably be done discussing or analyzing any of their decisions now, okay? ;)

I don't even know what this means. However, people do tend to disagree about things from time to time on a message board. I would call the exchanging of opinions healthy, not "war."

I know. That's exactly what I said above. Please read my posts.

Not at all - in fact, if you read my posts on this thread I made it clear that people should express their opinions. You were the one demanding that people stop posting their thoughts on players.

BOOM!

I'm dying of anticipation to see how Wayne responds to this.
