That isn't what he said, he was just pointing out that Cignetti didn't develop Mendoza and Hemby he acquired them.

Everything has come together for Indiana in an amazing way the past few seasons. Cignetti deserves a ton of credit but what they have been able to do is also a major byproduct of this current college football landscape where they have been able to bring in tons of transfers.

They have done a great job identifying talent and getting the guys they needed. They have hit massive home runs in the portal at the QB position and have had good luck on the health front.

Will be interesting to see if they can sustain it.

What does it have to do with Fleck? Kind of an obvious statement that a coach can’t have equal success anywhere he coaches. For one he wouldn’t have the financial support here that he has at Indiana.

MSM makes $232K because he’s 26 and other than Fleck nobody in FBS would have made him a full assistant quite yet should we pay him $500K or the going rate for a B10 LBer coach just to make our salary numbers look better?

It's kind of been the perfect storm. Cignetti never won a natty at any previous stops and has been coaching forever. But he goes to Indiana and it's all working like a well-oiled machine.

Don’t you wonder why Fleck is hiring a guy that he can pay half the going rate for? Could it possibly be because he has to?

They got to the CFP without Mendoza so, obviously not just him.

He also had zero role in preventing the opposition from scoring points on offense.

And, if you are not paying attention, don't be surprised if Volleyball, Wrestling, and Hockey are usurped. Yes, I believe that PSU hockey has more NIL $ than Minnesota. Other institutions have fans, alumni, and boosters who prioritize, believe, and appreciate the importance of college sports. I truly cannot say about my own alma mater.

Burnsie, who is in a position to know, has intimated at least a few different times I can personally recall that MN is competitive with peers in the NIL world.

I doubt anyone reading this outside Derek Burns or his accountant know the real numbers.

We’ve never seen a coach here take advantage of these supposed unused funds. Sure maybe some years a couple hundred thousand is left on the table, but that’s not a meaningful amount.

Related topic now that we lost our RB coach let’s get Mo back in the fold how fun would that be. Such a superstar would be great to bring him home.

I’m a believer our AD would need to prioritize football; is it possible to reallocate budget money away from other staff or spending/wring money out of the cushions. I don’t know. Probably.

Stole from somewhere else. But list of Cignetti and Indiana accomplishments over the last 4 weeks:
  • Beating Ohio State for the first time in 35 years.
  • Winning the conference outright for the first time in 80 years.
  • Winning a top-5 matchup for the first time ever.
  • Winning a top-2 matchup for the first time ever.
  • Being ranked #1 for the first time ever.
  • Having a Heisman winner for the first time ever.
  • Winning the Rose Bowl for the first time ever.
  • By belting the shit out of Alabama for the first time ever.
  • Oh, and becoming the first team to receive a bye and win their playoff game.
 




Cignetti does win...he is 144 and 37 in his career.
He finished in first place or tied for first in 6 of his last 7 years coaching. He finished in second place in his first year at Indiana....first this year.
He played in and lost the Natty to North Dakota State while at James Madison.
I'm rooting for him to win two more games this season.

Neither the 2024 IU team nor the 2025 IU team with just swapping Mendoza and Rourke, beats Iowa, Oregon, or Penn State from the 2025 schedule.

9-3 is still historically great for IU ... not that history means a single thing now ... but that's not CFP and no one is talking about it.
 

Good for Cig. Luckiest MF in CFB.

He's the same thing right now as Dabo and Clemson in 2016.

Took Dabo six years to build it up into what it became, in the old pre-NIL regime, instead of just immediately buying a bunch of players.


And like Dabo and Clemson today, it will (eventually) come back to Earth. But enjoy your time in the sun, you've certainly earned (purchased) it.
 

History means absolutely nothing, now.

IU football history from 2023 and before .... is absolutely irrelevant and cannot in any way be linked to what IU football is now.

They just invented a brand new team from scratch.


That's what CFB is now.

This is a statement that means absolutely nothing until you know who burns considers peers

If Wisconsin is the peer…they largely think they’re behind because of NIL

If Ohio state is the peer…burns is lying or wrong….


Would be interested to know if he has said who the peers are.
As you said, nobody outside burns knows the real Mn
And burns doesn’t know the real numbers from other places


So he’s kind of just making half of his comparison up
