All Things 2025/26 College Football Transfer Portal Thread

Correct. With players being paid, getting NIL, and being able to transfer whenever they want, it's totally fair for schools to also be able to tell kids they aren't good enough and need to move on. This isn't 2000, which doesn't seem 25 year ago.

Coaches, players, and families are the lease surprised when this happens. They know.

Fans, not so much.
They absolutely tell some kids to leave.
Ultimately the kid has to agree to give up the scholarship though. Sure you can tell him he’s not going to play ever, but only first year coaches can cut players, even then they can still attend school on scholarship if they want to.

No they don’t. Scholarships are year to year. 3 years ago I posted about this, my first post on this site, and you were the same person that gave me flack about it then. You clearly don’t know any athletes that this has happened to. To be clear, I’m not ripping on PJ for this. Players gained some freedom with the portal, and lost some security. I wouldn’t even bother to comment on the transfers if I didn’t see so many posters here rip on kids leaving, saying things like “players these days have no commitment, no patience”…they don’t all have a choice. The truth is, unless you know the player you have no idea why they are looking elsewhere, it’s insanely hard to transfer laterally when you have no game film! Players and their families aren’t dumb they know this. A very few leave for more money. QB’s leave because ultimately there is only room for one. Zach Annexstad was a UDFA with Tampa Bay. I’m guessing Athan and Jacob Clark will both be UDFA’s as well.

There a lot of “camp bodies”. Doesn’t mean someone should be a free agent every year for four years in college.

Athan I bet makes it onto a practice squad.

Even at lower levels it is getting harder to get a look. Both NDSU and SDSU are focusing their portal efforts on productive DII, NAIA and FCS players over P4 transfers who never played.

Complete nonsense.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no such thing as a 4 year scholarship, they have always been year to year, but the practice was never to pull them on an annual basis. Maybe I dreamed this up.

The Big Ten mandated 4-year scholarships starting in 2014. Don’t know if/when this changed or the current practice.

Did a little digging on the interwebs. There's no indication that the policy changed, nor that it is still in place for Football and Basketball.

I'd be shocked if it still was in place. In the day and age of players not honoring any commitments, this step, which was needed in 2014, a change would be a quid pro quo for the 100% freedom players have today to walk away from their commitments to schools/teams/coaches at any time, as we've seen in the past two years.

I was under the impression the student has the option of retaining the scholarship even if they were cut from the active team roster (assuming they were in good standing). In that scenario, that scholarship would not count against the roster limit. I would assume that situation is rare as most student athletes would probably transfer.

Hot take, the guaranteed four year scholarship is a good idea and should be in place.

You were wrong three years ago and still are as far as I know. There’s a reason I don’t know any athletes this has happened to. There’s a reason St Juste was “medically retired” by Michigan and not just cut.

Could be a number of things not going to class or bad grades or a bad attitude or just not a good fit they get counseled out the door. College football coaches are masters at that; and should be. Happens all the time.

That for sure happens when kids get hurt or retire from football. I'm not sure that happens if you get cut, but I wouldn't know that part. I do recall several times we had guys who hung it up and stayed in school (or came back after a pro career).

It may not be cut, but they are likely told they won't see the field and/or be a priority in the program. That leaves the decision up to the kid.

I agree with this, their are work around, but cutting guys like video game style isn’t a thing.
