Very easy to show why it doesn't work:

- scenario A: owners decide no one gets any bonus in a new contract
- scenario B: owners decide they want to give huge bonuses in all new contracts

Exact same total value of the contracts in both cases, so will ultimately (over X years) have the same cumulative cap hits. But in scenario B there is a big blip in season cash the first year.

So what?


Make a logical argument for how this season's blip in cash proves something about KAM.

Because the owners are paying the most cash in the NFL for poor results this season. In addition they are back in cap hell again next season, and they'll have to make several cuts just to get under the cap.

Do you think the owners are getting what they paid for? This aging and expensive roster will limit how competitive they will be for the next several years. This isn't difficult to understand.

They are not in cap hell next year, no matter how many times people want to say that. The contracts that would most put them over the cap were structured to be re-done next spring. This is not news to anyone. There will be some attrition of players like Harrison Smith but it's not like they will be watching a half dozen impactful starters walk out the door. It's not happening, there's no sense in losing our minds over this right now

Yeah, I am not stressing over the Vikings being in "cap hell'. It is frustrating though that they were in "cap heaven" this season and are most likely to do Jack Squat.

I disagree that they are going to restructure their way out of it. They're not going to restructure Jefferson, Darrisaw, or Murphy who are all on new deals. Greenard, O'Neil, and Van Ginkle would make some sense but the latter 2 will be 31. Do you really want to try and extend/restructure Hockenson's massive deal or do you cut him? He has 12.4 million in dead cap.

The biggest problem is Allen and Hargrave. They're count for 43 million against the cap next season and if you cut them, it's still ~28 million in dead cap.

They have $14 million to roll over. They can get under by cutting Kelly, Hockenson, Aaron Jones and Allen and then perhaps restructure/extend Grenard/Van Ginkel. I wouldn't be shocked if they trade Addison and explore trading Darrisaw. Something is off with him and the injury status throughout this season.

They are projected to be ~24 million over the cap next season right now. Cutting those 4 get you gets you a savings of roughly 30 million, putting them only 6 million under the cap.

Kelly - 9 million
Hockenson - 9 million
Jones - 8 million
Allen - 4 million

Then you have to replace them and try to improve your team.

You have internal replacements for all except Hockenson and even a Johnny Mundt level cheap replacement would be an upgrade over him.

Branded has played well. Per the Vikings coaches and they were prepared to play him the rest of the way if Kelly didn’t limp back.
