We're out here to find a Tubby Smith. We're out here to find somebody that people can recognize, people have confidence in, and people are going to bring instant credibility and notoriety to the football program. That is my goal. Whether that is that interest, remains to be seen, but I'm excited about the time line that we have.

Do you think he delivered on his goal he set for himself?

This is a rhetorical question, right? The answer is so obviously "No," that the question doesn't even really need to be asked. The football program is just as unexciting and unappealing to recruits and fans (if not more so) than it was before.

Not even close...and in the process, he set himself up for even more criticism.

No.

But Kill will be a good hire. He will take the program forward. His hiring will also make it easier for me to get the tickets I had to let go for financial reasons last year back.

Really nothing against Kill, but if the "name" candidates we targeted wouldn't take the job, why not talk to Leach? Joel couldn't get it done, and just kept going on down the list, without taking a step back and saying -- well, this isn't working, time to try a new direction. Of course, when you have no clue as to what you are doing, it's kind of hard to change course.

Fire Maturi.

He reached his goal in getting a living breathing person to patrol the sidelines of TCF stadium on Saturdays.

This hire does NOTHING to get fans/boosters/random idiots on the street excited about Gopher football.

Not a chance. He hired someone that no casual fan has ever heard of. *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#, most of our blue hairs haven't heard of Northern Illinois even though we lost to them this year. This is a huge letdown. Bye bye season tickets.

To be honest - I think this was a harder sell than any of us realized - harder than Maturi realized.

I think the combination of being so bad for so long and a President/AD leaving was a horrible sell. While I liked Brewster personally - I think he really hurt this program perception wise. That hire will be Maturi's legacy on this program unless Kill can turn this around.

I pray Kill is successful. I want to stop being the butt of football jokes.

No. I do not trust JM.

Really would like to know who was interviewed, what they were offered and why they declined.

Maturi's qoute from this same press conference really bothers me

Q. You said you're out here to find another Tubby Smith, someone people recognize. Why wasn't that important and paramount when you hired Brewster?

JOEL MATURI: Well, it was. I didn't say it wasn't. I'm saying when you make a decision December 31st and you are a little bit more challenged in time lines and what you do. Only I know who was and was not interested in the position at that time. Again, this is not to put disparaging remarks on Coach Brewster. I felt he was the best candidate available and made a decision to hire him. In reality, we hope that this time line, we'll have more very good quality, recognizable, achievable, experienced coaches.

I've been quietly supportive of Maturi but this is obviously a massive fail on his part. It may have been the case that selling the U was significantly more difficult than he (or many of us) realized. That's been true for most of our sports teams over the past decade or more. Regardless, in terms of getting a recognizable coach who will excite the fan base this is an epic disaster on the part of the university. I literally could not be more unimpressed (and this says nothing about Kill's solid coaching record or potential for success) based on what was claimed at the outset and what has now been delivered. I can only hope that we learn more details as time goes on and that we have the opportunity to piece some of the crazy, month-long speculation together. At least the state can continue to have a molester-'stache patrolling the sidelines (I was sure getting worried when we let Chilly go). Ugh.

The answer is no. Kill is obviously a good coach. However, to make a major move in the Big Ten after all these years of futility required a big time hire- per what Maturi asked. I'm sure Maturi gave it his all. However, I'm not sure Maturi was the person we needed to sell the Uof M to the guy we needed. Maturi should have stepped down so that the person who will manage the next coach would have had a chance to hire him.

What's done is done. All the best to coach Kill in the years ahead.

If it is Jerry Kill, I would say no based on the criteria set forth initially.

If Leach would have taken the job, and the U didnt hire him there is something drastically wrong.

One thing we Gopher faithful must ask, if Kill is the new coach:::: What is sooooo wrong with MN football that no "name" coach will touch it?????

I'm kind of dumbstruck, or dumbfounded, or punchdumb, or something. Kill will be good, better than Brewster. His team didn't win the MAC championship. I don't know. The whole thing is such a let down.

Deleted my comment for as a public service.

He might as well have kept Horton. This hire brings zero excitement. But that's Joel. Here's a guy that will be beholden to Maturi just like all his non revenue team coaches are. He has his own little fiefdom over at the U. Leach would have rocked Joel's little world.

Coach Kill will be right there in the weekly coaches meeting with all Joel's other underlings telling him what a great job he is doing. I bet Tubby and Hebert are the only guys who don't have to go and kiss Joel's ring at those meetings.

No way. At worst there were still better options. Epic fail.

Hogan??

Paul Hogan?

As has been noted in other threads, you have an agenda when it comes to Maturi. You don't like him, he didn't take up your ideas. Just more evidence of that.

IMO, your implication is that he did not try to reach the stated goal. I think he tried and damm hard. But that doesn't really matter to you does it.

None of us had a clue that he wouldn't be able to bring in a "tubby" type hire. But the reality is different than our perceptions.

I'm backing Coach Kill. I think he's going to make us all proud.

If his goal was to disappoint and piss off the entire fan base I would say yes, fine job sir, mission accomplished.

We get it Mrs. Maturi, you're hubby is a hard working decent sort. The thing is he just isn't up to the job where he currently takes up space. Please talk to him about signing up for some on line TV repair courses as he will hopefully need another vocation soon.

Of course he didn't if Jerry Kill is the guy. He doesn't have the sparkly name to bring instant hype and credibility. He's just simply a good coach, which isn't what people wanted here. So no, he didn't reach his top goal. He did accomplish getting a good coach here, but Kill's not gonna have people flocking to games.

Epic fail is an understatement.

I have never posted anything suggesting that Maturi should be fired. I figured he made one mistake in believing the BS that Brewster was spewing, but that he had learned his lesson and would not screw this up. I was wrong. Maturi should have been forced to resign at the start of this process.

I believed President Bruininks when he said that he would be there to guide Maturi and review and approve his choice and that we were going to get a coach that we could all be proud of. I was wrong. He has a chance to rectify this situation, but I fear he won't. He will merely end up tarnishing his legacy beyond repair.

What I don't understand is who do they think will be supportive of this pick.
