Big debate on the post-game show.

Legit question is:

If Max had not gone to Minnesota and somehow finished out at New Hampshire and made the squad...even to be No. 2 as transpired...would there be a call for him to see the field under the same circumstances?

Or said another way, is the only reason there are calls for Max just really the homer effect due to the Gophers connection?

Clearly Max going to Minnesota is why he's a Viking with KOC's connections to Coach Fleck and the local proximity factor weighing heavily. Clearly though this has to be part of the front office and KOC calculations.

Ron Johnson admits there's probably some homer in him but thinks it's time. Why not see what the kid has got?

Of course, we want to see the former Gopher play! The season is finished. Give him a chance. If he produces half-way decent results it’s a great Minnesota story.
 

From the head coach perspective if he came in and flopped…then the NFL fan mob will say JJs confidence is irreparably ruined, coach didn’t have a proper bench, coach didn’t draft well and the QB whisperer thing kind of bursts into flames. Gonna ride this thing straight into the abyss if that’s what it takes, while hoping it pulls out of the dive.

Personally I’d love to see Max get a shot but I’m not confident that’s ever going to happen barring injury. So, decent probability.
 


Mcconnell's post game comments cause me to believe they'll anchor themselves to McCarthy to the very end of the season unless he's injured, which is a crock of shit. The dude is a total dud.

There's always calls for the back-up QB. The shame is that they didn't play him instead of Wentz. They're not going to bench McCarthy this year.

I wonder if coach doesn’t have a directive to keep MaCarthy in the game, Chicagos guy was bad last year, Carolinas guy 2 years bad but getting better.

Max throws on time better than Mac, it seems, would be fun to see him get a better shot.

I would venture the opinion nothing could be worse for the "quarterback whisperer" rep than watching JJ McCarthy stink the joint up.

The circumstances are what they are. Every opportunity includes some luck. He seems prepared so why not roll the dice?
 

It turns out when your team doesn't rely on you as a play maker at the QB position very often... and your coaches know the other teams plays ... might complicate making a decision about a QB's ability to play in the NFL ...

The whole QB whisperer concept is so wild, every few years there's a new one, and they are always false prophets of sorts.

When the next one comes we'll forget all about it and some coach will get all the QB whisperer hype right until their luck runs out ...

Personally I think the NFL would be a lot more fun league if QBs were de-emphasized, but that would likely involve a lot of rule changes and so on.

He looked really good in the preseason. And it would be hard to be worse than McCarthy. Give Max a shot!!!

But the Vikings heavily invested in JJ and probably won't admit their mistake. They seem to be willing to lose a season for him.

It was a terrible draft pick from the get go for those reasons.

And we could have had Jones or Darnold instead.

The Vikings have nothing to lose. The season is over. Might as well see what they have in Brosmer.

This! I don’t understand what O’Connell saw in McCarthy. It’s like those Ohio St QB’s. They have all day to throw and throw to top 5 picks. McCarthy had 1 great game in college that I saw. I honestly thought his backup who transferred to Iowa was better when he played at Michigan. McCarthy sucks. If they don’t give Brosmar a shot I’ll be shocked. It’ll tell me they’ll never have a shot at a Super Bowl.

I doubt Kwesi is telling KOC who to play. Most coaches wouldn't put up with that and KOC doesn't seem like an exception. If he forced the Wilfs to choose between him and Kwesi he would win easily.

I agree, KOC, for good reason, seems very surly on the sideline, and yet doesn’t make the change, so I wonder….Why, why, why, why, why, why,…oops
 

Speaking strictly as a Vikings fan:

If Brosmer hadn't spent one year here as a portal mercenary, then no local rube fans are calling for him to play any more than they're calling for John Wolford to play.

He's ... undrafted. If he never plays for us ... it's not a big deal.

There's no point in pretending like he was a 4th round draft pick this year. No .. we don't need to see what we have in him.


Obviously I get there is going to be Gopher homerism on this site, as there should be. Carry on

There's going to be homerism, sure. However, for an undrafted fringe practice squad spring guy to be so impressive that you roll with him as your primary backup come season, that will get any fan base wanting to see him play (Wentz is a one year stopgap). And no, you don't as admin put a local college kid as your backup to just get fans in the seats. Such a player clearly did show the staff something.

It’s kind of natural to want a guy you’re familiar with, who has shown pretty well, to play when the offense is operating at about 50%. 148 yards, someone should be benched.
 

I think it’s gonna be McCarthy until he figures it out or moves on to another team. Gonna be tough to watch. Dude looks completely lost unfortunately for everyone.

Agree - NFL is very different then college....in college if a guy was struggling the way JJ is you would probably go to the backup. In the NFL there are contracts and other things at play that muck it up. The Vikings invested a high draft pick in JJ, they have to see if he can develop to the point of being worth that investment. That means letting him take his lumps in a non-playoff season so that they can decide in the off-season if he is the guy or if they need to go another direction.

JJ holds onto the ball way too long and is reckless when he runs so good chance Max will get in there at some point due to injury. But as rough as it is I don't see them benching JJ to give Max a shot for any reason other than injury at this point.

Having said that.....if he keeps throwing the ball to the other team he may force their hand on giving Max a shot. :)
 

As both a Gopher n Vikings season ticket holder I’d love to see Max have an opportunity. As previous posters have already said it’s highly unlikely unless JJ gets hurt. Given how long he hangs onto the ball and gets sacked it could happen soon.
 

We all know JJ is the youngest QB in the NFL right? I am a Vikings fan too and want to see them win (just one Super Bowl in my lifetime), but to write him off as a has been or never was might be premature.

As a Patriots fan, this reminds me of the Mac Jones-Bailey Zappe controversy we had a few years ago. Now granted, we did actually spend a draft pick on Zappe, but on the other hand, Mac had shown he was actually capable of playing QB over the course of a season in the NFL.
I think that fan bases tend to be in denial after blowing a first round pick on a QB so it’s natural to see the backup QB as a potential savior.

I figured, that we would take our lumps with a young QB. JJ definitely has potential to be really good, as evidence by the Chicago and Detroit game, even if he didnt have the greatest numbers. Having a young QB who misses all of his first year then misses time again, you expect there to be some ill-timed mistakes. But the amount of mistakes we've seen is definitely concerning.
As for the possibility of Max starting over him, of we are out of the playoff picture at any point, we should take a look at him.
The Sacramento Kings has a situation like that a while ago where they drafted Jimmer Fredette 8th overall and 5 foot 9 Isaiah Thomas late in the 2nd round of the same draft and they ended up having IT becoming a star while Jimmer was out of the league in a few years and their GM got fired for that basically. Not saying Kwesi would get fired if that happened, but it would make people look worse for the misfire.
I still believe in JJ, despite the rampant frustration with him. But the performances lately are less than encouraging.
