Max

As a Patriots fan, this reminds me of the Mac Jones-Bailey Zappe controversy we had a few years ago. Now granted, we did actually spend a draft pick on Zappe, but on the other hand, Mac had shown he was actually capable of playing QB over the course of a season in the NFL.
I think that fan bases tend to be in denial after blowing a first round pick on a QB so it’s natural to see the backup QB as a potential savior.
Mac may be the Vikings starter next year. And I feel Kwesi will get fired this off season.

Big debate on the post-game show.

Legit question is:

If Max had not gone to Minnesota and somehow finished out at New Hampshire and made the squad...even to be No. 2 as transpired...would there be a call for him to see the field under the same circumstances?

Or said another way, is the only reason there are calls for Max just really the homer effect due to the Gophers connection?

Clearly Max going to Minnesota is why he's a Viking with KOC's connections to Coach Fleck and the local proximity factor weighing heavily. Clearly though this has to be part of the front office and KOC calculations.

Ron Johnson admits there's probably some homer in him but thinks it's time. Why not see what the kid has got?
We won't swap out JJ at this point. You have to see if there is anything there for the rest of the year.

That said, there would 100% be calls for the backup regardless of where he went to college. Most Vikings fans don't care about the U of MN.

In the NFL, if the quarterback is struggling, the fans start clamoring for the backup. It's happened here for guys like Gus Frerotte, Kelly Holcomb, Joe Webb, or Kyle Sloter. When you're watching terrible QB, whatever the F is behind door #2 seems appealing.

Agree with your sentiment but Frerotte was a decent QB and during his second stint he backed up Tarvaris so yeah, fans would take anyone else on a hope and a prayer. Echoes of the past right now.

I remember that 2008 team as being hailed as SB contenders, loaded. The 2009 team actually was phenomenal, adding Favre, Percy. Almost.

So you have seen them both in person, close up. Who is better?
7 rows from Goldy n 21 rows up from Vikes. Hard to compare given Max was only used sparingly in the preseason n JJ is finding out that NFL speed is brutal. JJ right now is very inaccurate and is holding the ball way too long. Vikes r in a bad spot with so much of their salary cap into JJ’s supporting cast. Feels like the remainder of this season will be spent on evaluating whether he can start at this level. Predicting successful NFL QB’s is difficult.

Speaking strictly as a Vikings fan:

If Brosmer hadn't spent one year here as a portal mercenary, then no local rube fans are calling for him to play any more than they're calling for John Wolford to play.

He's ... undrafted. If he never plays for us ... it's not a big deal.

There's no point in pretending like he was a 4th round draft pick this year. No .. we don't need to see what we have in him.

Obviously I get there is going to be Gopher homerism on this site, as there should be. Carry on
Did you watch the game this weekend? No "local rube" fans would be calling for him to play if he hadn't been a Gopher? Far from it. JJ is so bad that fans would be calling for the backup, no matter who it is. I'd be happy for the back up punter to take some snaps at qb at this point. The result would be about the same and it would be more entertaining. Or, they should sign one of the winning QBs from one of the prep bowl winners. It would generate more fan interest. Zero chance that my TV is tuned into a Vikes game the rest of this season if they continue to trot JJ out there.

Yes, it is really difficult. Kind of hit or miss. Already time to admit that we missed on this one.

How about the reason is JJ has been historically bad and major team infrastructure both on and off field will be changing as a result?

Max being a Gopher is a cute story. JJ looks really bad so far.

I hate to be this dramatic because there's no way KOC is getting fired this cycle even if they lose all the remaining games. He'll get another shot to find another Darnold (Mac Jones?) and redo. But there's a clear evaluation mistake on the coaches and GM and Max represents the only way to save face for this season.

He may be the Brock Purdy to JJ's Trey Lance. The last hope of a regime to redeem itself on what looks like an all-time misstep for the franchise.

I'm about to add Max Brosmer to a fantasy football team (superflex) and not just to be a homer

If he survives at Seattle, the next 3 games are against the worst pass defenses in the league. Dallas, Washinton, Giants

Let's hop Max can light it up! I have Jefferson on one of my fantasy teams and he's been shit with McCarthy playing...

Doc: "I dunno... doesn't seem like a concussion to me..."

Coach: "Have you seen this guy play?!?!?!"
Doc: "I dunno...doesn't seem like a concussion to me."

Coach: //whacks McCarthy upside the head with baseball bat// "how about now?"

Are the Vikings admitting they let JJ play with a concussion? I doubt he got a concussion off the field in less than 24 hours.

This feels like a way to see what Max can do and give JJ a break without officially benching him.

This! I don’t understand what O’Connell saw in McCarthy. It’s like those Ohio St QB’s. They have all day to throw and throw to top 5 picks. McCarthy had 1 great game in college that I saw. I honestly thought his backup who transferred to Iowa was better when he played at Michigan. McCarthy sucks. If they don’t give Brosmar a shot I’ll be shocked. It’ll tell me they’ll never have a shot at a Super Bowl.
So McCarthy basically needs a better offensive line in front of him. Good luck getting out from under the burdensome Spielman curse.

the schedule-script is there. Seattle is a hard one but after that there's a lot of winnable matchups for him to look good

Is it just me, or does it feel like Karma is doing everything it possibly can to get Max his chance to start?

Maybe he's been stuck as his alter ego who can't play quarterback for the past 24 hours. Alarming.

As a big Gopher fan, and a big Seahawks fan, I hate to see him make his first start against Seattle. I guess I have to hope he plays really well, but the Vikings still lose.

There was a 10 yard scramble run he had late in the game where he got hit hard and got up slowly.

Yeah, wouldn't shock me that if the concussion thing is legit, that was when it happened because he took a really good shot on that play.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out this week, sounds like JJ isn't ruled out yet as an option but if he can't practice it would seem likely they would hold him out.
