Post Game Thread: Gophers Lose Back and Forth Game to Northwestern, Fall to 6-5 as Defense Struggles Again

Because they had a lead early and their QB will throw to other team from time to time. They went with passing after the half.
I get it.... I was mocking Stones completion percentage and yards per catch... I have not seen cushions like that given to opposing receivers since Willie Teal played for the Vikings.

Denaburg is worthless on any kick over 40 yards.....but this loss is 100% on the defense. 35 points on the road against this Northwestern team should have been more then enough to get the W.

To give up 38 points and over 500 yards of offense is a friggin joke. Missed tackles, missed assignments, and they managed to make Stone look like the second coming of Drew Brees.

Somebody on the D needed to make a damn play and nobody stepped up. Very disappointing. Offense wasn't perfect by any means but they did more then enough.

We need a massive infusion of talent on the defensive side of the ball from the portal after this season. If the D-Line doesn't pressure the QB the secondary can't cover anything. I have no clue how much to pin on Collins directly but his unit has been rough for much of the year and was downright terrible today.

One thing that is clear about Collins though is that his gameplanning leaves a lot to be desired. Teams are able to pick us apart early and it leads to really slow starts to games.

Very disappointing to lose a game like this when the offense puts up what should have been way more then enough points to win against a Northwestern team that is not good on offense.
LOL.
24 hours ago you were scolding anyone who dared question how good this team is.

Ell OH Effing Ell

He’s the Commander’s OC.
Maxy, I know he’s the Washington OC. And as I said, he’s probably making $1 million a year that offsets his cardinal buyout. He’s not gonna make a splash being offensive coordinator for the commanders. How about he comes here helps the gophers get to the college playoffs. That would turn some heads.
I know it’s not gonna happen. I’m just throwing some stuff out there.

Why would NFL oc move to NCAA ?
Because he can make a bigger impact here. Let’s say we make the college football playoffs the year after he arrives. He would be on everyone’s list pro and college.
Do I think that’s going to happen?
No
But I think this program needs to make some bold moves or we’re just gonna end up screwed.

Kingsbury probably want's to be NFL head coach again. Someone like him is zero level, attainable being realistic on where he will be targeting. Face facts, our weather sucks balls in the winter. Kingsbury lived in Arizona.
I guarantee you weather has nothing to do with these decisions.

One thing that stood out was how slow our players look out there. On both sides. Just not sure if it's lack of effort or lack of physical talent.

I have nothing to add to all of the complaints about the defense. That performance speaks for itself.

On the other hand, the offense was much better than I thought they would be especially since they still didn't get much from the running game. Other than the kicker, the special teams play was better than usual too.

It would have been nice to win this game but Northwestern needed it more than us and pulled it out. It wasn't such a bad loss. The team beat the spread for one of the few times this season and the offense kept the game in doubt until the very end. This was the team's most points scored against an FBS team this season.

This was worse than last night's Timberwolves game, and that's saying something.

Worst defensive game in many years. Just completely unacceptable.

The play of the game was Fleck deciding to kick a FG on 4th and 5 where the chances of making it were like 10%. Everyone but him knew he was going to miss badly.

Lindsey and Perich were fun to watch.
I would have thought PJ would have learned from missed FG attempts earlier in the year or previous season's. Sometimes you need to go for it on 4th and 5 even if you don't like it.

Disagree on this not being a bad loss. 35 points against this Northwestern team should have been more then enough to win comfortably.....the fact that it wasn't is very concerning. We made a very mediocre offense look awesome. it is one thing to struggle with the likes of Ohio State and Oregon, but there is no way they should have been able to roll up 500 yards and 38 points against us.

Complete and total failure on the part of the defense today.

Yeah, I already stipulated that the defense was terrible. I don't know why you're so stunned. They gave up 456 yards to Purdue and 467 to Michigan State, two winless teams.

But, we were expected to lose, we lost by slightly less than expected, and the offense scored 35 points, highest total of the year against an FBS team.

The main difference is that in the Purdue and MSU games we held them to 20 points each. You can give up yards if you keep teams off the scoreboard.....bend but don't break is something a lot of teams employ.

Today we bent and broke.....over and over against a team that has really struggled to do anything on offense all season.

Great showing by Minnesota fans—seemed about a 50/50 breakdown. I imagine, sadly, any Chicagoland casual Gopher fans were not converted to the cause today. Today’s defensive performance was 1983-esque.
