With revenue sharing, is there any good reason why we're going after UND recruits? I could see if it was NDSU....

EDIT: Not sure if this is a scholarship or not. If it's a walk-on, I take back my comments.

I think it’s more so recruits that are “undervalued” and having a good 2025 season

Minnesota does not individually shop NIL and revenue sharing for HS recruits. They have a flat salary for freshmen and it's merit after that. That's what I've heard through the grapevine. All freshmen make the same.

Minnesota is still going to recruit similarly to in the past as all schools have the money to spend.

to be fair, you also need some guys who are going to eat no extra NIL. we do graduate 3 TEs this year as well. i'm sure he's a depth guy that you expect to play very little over 5 years unless he really blossoms and you need those guys on the roster as well.

From 247, he's got a good frame and is more a blocker. Seems like it makes sense given Voss (if he does play TE) should be used as minimally as a power run game blocker as possible.

FWIW....I've seen him play basketball a number of times (haven't seen him play football)....but he moves really really well for a 6'7" 230+ kid. He's got plenty of frame to fill out too.

Maybe he can play some ball too. We always need big bodies.

The days of "projects" should be over with. Go somewhere else and develop and get back to us.
Why? We should absolutely not shy away from projects. We should be more open to them today than in previous years. Scholarship numbers are much more flexible now because you move guys on. I think this is the reason we are seeing Fleck focus on more local recruits out of HS.

This is the lamest take ever. They went after him because they think he'll be able to contribute.

Nick Kallerup only had an offer from 1 FCS school (USD) before walking on and is now collecting an NFL paycheck.

Can he contribute right away? I highly doubt it or he'd have more offers and such. Why let him sit on our bench for a few years hoping he can contribute later? Why not go get a transfer who can contribute immediately and then bring this guy in when said transfer graduates?

And yes, there are examples like you mentioned, although it's not apples to apples since this guy is eating up a scholly versus the walk-on you mentioned, but in this day and age, what's wrong with letting someone else develop him?

I can make a longer list of players like Spencer Alvarez (the local dude who was like a 2* but we took him in 2020 or whatever) that never amounted to squat than you can make a list of these guys being successful.

Geez, only positive things on this board, eh?

In years past I think it was better to take projects because if they went elsewhere and had success, they probably weren't coming back here for their senior year.

If the guy wants to walk on, fine.

I think in the 2024 NFL draft an offensive lineman from UND was taken. THAT is the UND athlete I want to go after - the one who is entering his senior year and is better than the level he is currently playing at. Go get that senior and bring him in here for a year!

They like him and think he's a hidden gem?
I think I mistakenly assumed he was getting a scholarship. I take back my comments if he's just walking on. That's a great thing if he can come here and try it on his own dime.

Even if he's a scholarship and we think he's a guy we want, why not take him? Bonus if he's a walk on.

Gophers are and will be a developmental program. PJ states this and reiterates this frequently. Gophers don't have unlimited resources for transfer NIL so need to be strategic.

Makes total sense to see if a kid they think has the traits to develop and if they don't develop, then can transfer freely in the current environment.

Like I said previously, I have not seen him play football. What I do know is that Ellsworth doesn't throw the ball much so I doubt he's going to have eye popping stats. They pound the ball very effectively (Max Grand was a RB from Ellsworth who walked on here a couple of years ago and then transferred)....but a kid his size who can run and cut on the basketball court (and presumably catch) is worth a shot.
