Gophers five point favorites against Rutgers

I hope we win.

But I think that line is off. ... but this time of year I swear I see a lot of these lines that are a bit off.

That seems generous to the Gophers. Especially since Cal got waxed by a mid-major and Rutgers beat the Gophers last year.
I'm surprised by it too. I was thinking maybe favored by a point or two at the most.

I have a feeling last year is being repeatedly beaten over the team's head this week. They played like it was gonna be a gimmie and choked. I don't think we're going to see any lapses in effort this week

Rutgers opponents have been more impressive. Beat Ohio, possibly best MAC team.

Both teams coming off disappointing losses.

Morning game with likely stale atmosphere.

5 seems like a lot.

Line will probably shift but chances are it was set there in order to encourage bets for Rutgers. They always have a reason.

That said, us being a favorite at home is not surprising. I get the general negativity but we are coming off a bye week and playing at home against a decent but not spectacular Rutgers team.

Surprising to me. But Vegas typically knows more than we do. Sure.....Rutgers offense looked pretty impressive against Iowa.....but their defense was equally bad if not worse.

Rutgers looked really good last week. They're a little bit better than decent IMO.

Their defense has been pretty bad, they are decent at best in my opinion. Iowa is decent at worst, we’re also probably decent.

To your point, Cal lost 34-0 against San Diego State last week! Cal QB threw 2 interceptions. Maybe we just made their QB look like a Heisman contender? We almost had a Koi pick six off him. He threw one to SDSU. Both his picks were not fluky and were with him standing in the pocket.

I think we got scared with all the unorthodox plays he made when we should have chalked it up partly to luck and him playing with fire. He's a young, gun slinger that still needs to learn some lessons. We should have blitzed more hoping to force some mistakes.

Buffalo just lost to Troy and barely beat Kent State, maybe the worst team in FBS. There is no point mentioning Northwestern State.

Our previous opponents haven't aged well. This game is likely a toss up.

Koi muffing a punt on the 5 yard line was arguably the worst play of the game and doomed our chances. Love the kid but we were in it until that.

Ian Strong from Rutgers looked great last year. We need to not let him have 65 yard plays against us and shutting down Antwan Raymond's run is imperative this year too. Ja'Shon Benjamin also. They had 3x the rushing yards against us in 2024.

Cal's QB did look pretty average when the Gophers rushed more than 3 guys.

That also has WAY less bearing on this game than people believe in my opinion.

Initially, the spread was about a 2.5 point Gopher advantage. I'm not sure what happened to more than double that number but I did notice multiple Rutgers defenders leaving the field during the Iowa game. Rutgers' defense wasn't so good in the first place and presumably may be weaker if some starters are unavailable for the MN game.

The same way people thought that MN was headed for a bad season after the Bowling Green debacle. We also lost to 5-7 Illinois (at home) that season but finished the year at 9-4.

Rutgers looked really good for part of the first half last week. Iowa shut them down for most of the second with the exception of one TD drive.

We will have to play well to beat them but if we do this is a very winnable game.
