Northwestern State worst Gophers' opponent since... ?

The 4-7 2010 South Dakota Yotes come to mind, which would make Nortwestern State the worst opponent since the 2010 Gophers

This is the worst team to come into the Bank since it opened in 2009. Yet any score between 70-0 and 36-14 seems possible given the way Fleck often (but not always) plays these non conference games, and the way some supposedly overmatched opponents have provided difficult for Fleck's teams.
Sometimes it seems the Gophers use these games to try different tactics and mix and match personnel. Almost like a glorified scrimmage.

Were they really better than 0-11 Western Illinois from 2022?

Also, on the Bowling Green point, I don't think anyone was arguing that the team was necessarily "good." They're not a top level G5 team like Boise State, or even a major MAC player. However, their coach was improving the team, so it's not fair to look at them as bottom feeders like some of the other teams mentioned in the thread.

I was more tongue in cheek. But I just looked and the coach of Western Illinois that year went 0-22 over two seasons and was fired. I don't recall another coach going winless in back to back years

They were good that day.
Bowling Green:
19/36 for 170 yds & 1 picks
25 rushes for 22 yds
12 first downs
2 turnovers

Gophers:
5/13 for 58 yds & 2 picks
45 rushes for 182 yds
12 first downs
3 turnovers

I'd say that both teams were terrible. Bowling Green was just able to make it in the end zone twice.

Defensive struggle!

Yes. I watched them, in person, frustrate the Gophers' offense the entire game. I think that game was their "Super Bowl" and brought their best effort.
I would say Gophs played down. Five completed forward passes. Three turnovers. Seven penalties, four of which resulted in first downs. Barely won TOP.

Mike Sanford who was the O.C. for the Bowling Green befuddling, is now coaching high school football.

Not sure if they were already mentioned, but 2022 Gophers opponent Western Illinois went 0-11 that year and the Gophers smoked them 62-10. They were outscored by opponents 150 to 426.

Western Illinois looked way better than this Northwestern Illinois squad.

UFF da.

The is starting to look like 1983 Nebraska..... This is our worst opponent EVER !!

We used to play high schools so there's that comparison.

I wonder how the Demons would do against the Mud Dogs?

According to the Strib the Demons were paid $500,000 for this game.

For just the sheer novelty of this game as a Gophers fan I'd support the AD adding another $100,000 and a side trip to the Mall of America for these guys. Wish them well from here. They need it.

This Scoreboard msg is an indication of the new reigning designation.

They didn't need to apologize directly to me though.

#1 fan.

DO folks here agree that the Big Ten should make a rule saying that no more FCS teams are allowed to be scheduled non-conf?

I'd like to see a required 10th P4 game be scheduled in non-conf, as the SEC is mandating starting in 2026 and onward.

I like the fcs games. I get together with friends, bring our children to a casual game.

While I agree in principle that leaves room for 2 cupcakes which is 2 too many, IMO.

Though Oklahoma State a P4 school also got walloped in a similar fashion by Oregon.

I agree. Sorry Bison fans.

That’s what most teams do. 10 p4, a G5, and an FCS. These games serve a purpose even if people don’t like them.

Well said.

We were able to get live game reps for 76 players today. If we were scheduling like Indiana I could understand the complaining about a game against an overmatched FCS team. But we have a power 4 and MAC opponent in our other two non-conf games so there is nothing wrong with a layup in that third spot.

My complaint is NOT that the Gophers schedule such an opponent, it's that EVERYONE schedules this type of fodder.

As a consumer, it's a terrible product. As a Season Ticket holder, I don't have the ability to opt out of funding this type of contest.

It's always been somewhat of a joke given the scholarship and budget limitations. Now with NIL and the Portal it's even a wider chasm. Decent players at the FCS level don't hang around if they get the opportunity to get bigger checks, nor do they have to sit out.
