All Things 2025 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

Because he's a worse QB than Sam Howell. And he can't stay healthy.
Howell does nothing for me. Richardson at least has a skill set and KOC seems to like him. You're certainly right about staying healthy but I don't worry to much about that in a back-up.

So if you need a backup to win some games, you would rather have one who can't stay healthy? That doesn't make sense.

Howell is still only 24 and has not only been a better passer in the NFL so far, but his college numbers blow Richardson's out of the water.

Richardson is just another big athlete that college and NFL teams have tried to turn into a passer. That never works.

It's crazy that Howell is just a few months older than Max Brosmer, and has played a shitload of NFL football. In Washington, it seemed Eric Bienemy was hell bent on getting Howell killed, throwing the ball 40-50 times a game with a shit OL.

I'll take the upside of Howell right now, anytime. He's been in this offense for a few weeks. The throw in the last game was just an absolute abomination, but he can learn from it. I wouldn't be worried one bit about Howell having to play a little bit this season, with the supporting cast the Vikings have around him. He really hasn't played with the Vikings first team offense hardly at all.

only way you touch richardson is if you think you can develop him and ship him next offseason to someone else and earn draft stock. he is not going to consistently win you games in a team that's number one value at QB this year is valuing the ball.

Over 16 games, he's more likely to get hurt. What is the over/under on the # of starts the Vikings back-up will make this year? 3? 4? I'd rather have the more talented option.

They're both young, but Howell was bad last year in Seattle and he's been bad so far as a Viking. Richardson has won a fair amount of games when he's played. I feel better about KOC's ability to fix his issues than Howell's. You can't fix lack of talent.

Who knows? JJ could get hurt in game 1 or never get hurt. The Vikings are 1 season removed from starting 4 different QBs.

Sam Howell does not have a lack of talent. He was considered a top 5 pick heading into his final season, then he was up and down that season and is on the smaller side which is why he slipped. He still threw for over 10,000 yards, 92 TDs, and 23 INTs in college with a 64% completion rate. Richardson threw for a total of 3,100 yds, 24 TDs, and 15 INTs at a 55% completion rate.

Richardson's completion rate so far in the NFL is 51%. He's a terrible passer, can't read a defense and the only thing he's good at is running. Basically the opposite of what KOC wants in a QB.

Howell looked good in the 1st preseason game, bad in game 2, but judging anything on preseason is laughable when most starters don't play.

I'd probably roll with Richardson over Howell but I wouldn't spend more than a 6th Round Pick to throw those dice. Sadly, if something does go sour with JJM, I think we're most likely looking at a Cousins reunion.

Why would you even waste a 6th rounder on him? He's literally never been a good QB at any point in his HS, college, or pro career. Mitch Leidner was a better college QB than him.

I see something different in AR and KOC can coach that position so I'd have no problem spending that late pick on a Hail Mary QB prospect.

This is the mindset that has fucked numerous nfl GMs lol. But yeah a 6th rounder is basically a toss up. You’re looking for hail Mary’s or ST depth guys there

This is the truth.

They already have 2 hail mary QBs on the roster who are infinitely better at playing QB than Richardson, and they don't cost anything additional.

oh i wouldn't waste the pick personally. just saying a 6th rounder yeah that's the type of project you take on. don't really see a good reason to do it with Richardson, particularly when we need depth picks next year with how old our team is and expensive signing FAs as your starters is

i like howell.he's more than fine as a spot starter if you need

I would not find that all that sad. We know he knows KOC and his system and they've worked well together. He was getting MVP talk if I recall corrected once he had things figured out and turned around in 23 ... damn shame about his injury.

Think last year he (like someone else) was still not fully back from his Achilles rupture.

So far this preseason, there is little to no evidence that Howell, for the 2025 Vikings, is more than fine as a spot starter if McCarthy has to miss a game (or more). I'm don't doubt he did this and that in college and for other NFL teams in previous seasons.

Not sure if he's having difficulty with KOC's system or what. So far, he ain't it

Not impossible that the Colts would do Howell for Richardson straight up if they are really committed to Jones.

This would be a horrendously stupid move, with or without factoring in Howell. The kid can't play. Period. AR puts it on the ground almost once per game, throws an INT almost once per game, and hasn't shown that he can stay healthy. At all. Howell's Bad Throw % is not far from Half of what Richardson's is, and Howell has thrown a lot of bad footballs himself.

You acquire him, you're also acquiring the contract situation, already in Year 3 of the rookie deal, way, way too close to the time you'll have to make a decision on the next contract, and you likely wouldn't have nearly enough information to make that call when you need to.

For the life of me, I don't know why so many people see "Athlete" and automatically think a good coach can make him into an NFL franchise QB.

Would imagine for The same reason why so many men see a crazy but attractive woman and say “I can fix her”

People act like KOC is a god damn miracle worker. Richardson sucks and KOC can’t fix that. He didn’t fix Dobbs or Mullins. And that’s not the fault of KOC, those guys suck too.

Josh Allen polluted a lot of brains, from the fan on the couch all the way up the chain to NFL GM's.

Richardson would not be a good backup option IMO. You only bring him in if you think there's a legit chance he can become "the guy" long term. Otherwise it's better to have a backup that fits the system you currently have. Richardson fits much better in a run first offense like Lamar is in. He's a horrible fit for an offense that throws 30+ times a game.

I guess you could have a wildcat type of package with him where he comes in for 5-10 plays a game but I'm not sure that alone is worth bringing him in for.
