Would love to see a rule that in order to be eligible to kick a FG the drive has to reach a minimum spot of advancement into the opposing team's territory. Can even be that say they got there on first, but then lost yards on 2nd/3rd and went out, still good enough since they got there at one point.

It also makes the new rules for KO and where teams start with the ball in various situations really, really stupid. Handing the receiving team the ball on like the 35 or even 40-yard line is just plain stupid.

It cheapens the game; 20 yard line wasn’t ever wrong.
 

I didn't realize the new touchback rule is now at the 35 yard line. That's crazy. Make it the 20 yards line again but have the kickers kick from further back to make touchbacks much harder.

I meant touchbacks be to the 20 yard line like they used to be a long time ago. But then have kickers kick from like the 25 or 30 so it makes touchbacks much harder to do.

I saw this happen in one of the preseason games this weekend; the kicker didn't get the KO to the "landing zone" (I think he line drived one that landed short) and the receiving team got the ball on the 40-yard line. Just plain stupid and ridiculous.

Yes. Bring back proper kickoffs and kick returns. Enough with the gimmicks. Its football. Its violent. Let them play.
 

Alec Lewis, The Athletic, with this latest 53-man roster projection. He says this is easily the most important week of training camp, because of how much KOC puts on the joint scrimmages, as the Patriots come to town.

Interesting note about the QB situation, and I wholeheartedly agree with him:

In: J.J. McCarthy, Sam Howell, Max Brosmer

Out: Brett Rypien

Was McCarthy perfect in Saturday’s preseason opener? No. He noted his inaccuracies after the game, and he said he felt a bit sped up at times. Is it concerning? Not in the slightest. The operation was smooth, and that’s most important.

Why Howell and Brosmer? These are two changes from our last roster projection. Howell played confidently against the Houston Texans. His arm talent is undeniable. More reps in O’Connell’s system should only help.

Meanwhile, Brosmer going undrafted is head-scratching, to put it nicely. By comparison, the Texans’ Graham Mertz, who threw three interceptions Saturday, was selected in the sixth round. Brosmer sees the field, processing the defensive picture in a way you cannot teach. Coaches have raved about his smarts behind the scenes, too. If the Vikings don’t add him to the 53-man, they’d risk losing a reliable player at the game’s most critical position."

I still think Howell is going to be fine, and a very good backup option for the Vikings this year. He is only going to get better the longer he spends in KOC's system
 

agree zero reason to roster rypien.

on the mertz thing, think people forget his 2023 where he looked really good throwing for almost 3k yards, 20TD and 3INTs with another 4 rushing TDs and then tore his ACL in 2024. Probably not the one I would pick on as the oddity as compared with say tommy mellott who you knew did not have the QB chops to play at this level and wasn't enough of an athlete to stick in the NFL.
 



Rumors floating around that the Vikings are considering a trade for Adam Thielen to add more depth at WR.

Would make sense for the Vikings but Carolina thinks they are competing this year (not totally irrational since their division is weak.)
 


Probably doing Asamoah a favor, give him a chance to catch on somewhere else sooner than later

Two things that are pretty important to this discussion that most people either don't know or seem to gloss over;

First, the first draft for KAM and the new regime, as is customary when there's a HC and staff firing, was conducted using the entire scouting department, and their information and insight, from the previous regime. This is typical in the NFL, and then most or all of that scouting department is sent packing often immediately at the time of the draft or just after, and the new regime brings in their own scouting department.

Secondly, most of the swings and misses in that draft were defensive players, and the newly hired DC, Ed Donatell, had a massive influence over those defensive players that were taken; and those players obviously were supposed to be a better fit for Donatell's defensive scheme. And Donatell was sent packing before he did too much damage into the KOC/KAM tenure.

KAM has put together one of the best rosters in the NFL going into this season and honestly, I couldn't be any happier with how he's handled the assembly of the roster and the cap. Drafting is part of being a GM, for sure, but the main job is assembling a winning roster and they have most definitely done that since they arrived in MSP

Nah. He shit the bed on his first Draft. He's done much better since and is on course to be a Top 10 GM.
 




Sounds like McCarthy is not throwing well today.

I imagine it will be a bit up and down with him early on in the season. To me he looked pretty comfortable running the offense in preseason game 1. I imagine KOC will try to make things as easy as possible for him to start the season.
 


lol at those getting worked up over McCarthy. If the defense is this good, which we could afford because McCarthys contract, we’ll be just fine and he’ll get better as the year rolls on. If the defense isn’t as good as we’re thinking, it’s not going to matter who would’ve been the qb. He has yet to play an nfl game yall. Shit maybe we should do what college teams have done and blur the qb if there’s all this angst
