Dawson Garcia Entering The Transfer Portal

Really does a player even have to go to class or at least pretend to be in college basketballs future?Society seems destined to be ruled by courts then deem everything unfair.

Interesting thread:

Go Gophers!!
It feels like he is going to get another year. There certainly is a current hole in the roster that fits him well and I kind of feel like he could still be a Gopher. He has sacrificed a lot in the past to be here and it is likely we have enough money to make him happy to do it again here. This might be a lot of fun if he is able to do it. Somebody would have to explain to me why the roster Niko has lined up- plus Garcia- wouldn't be at least as talented as the CSU team he had that made a little run in the tournament.

I feel like if he is granted another he will be with someone other than the gophers. I think he will command too much money and I wouldn’t blame him for taking the bag. He is easily worth $1m+ in todays portal landscape and as great as he has been in college I doubt he has much of a career in the NBA

I wonder what the basis is for Garcia seeking a waiver? I'm not even arguing that he should/shouldn't receive a waiver, but I assume you have to say something like "I should get another year because XYZ". What's the XYZ?

4-5 million!!! where TF do these numbers come from? Message board numbers…no basis in reality! 🤯
Exactly! There isn't ANY WAY he's getting that but honestly, if he's got one more year, it shouldn't be with the Gophers. I don't see him in it for the same reasons that the coach would want him back for, time to move on!

My friends and I still joke about what role Wade Lookingbill and James Moses will have this year, because it seemed like they were on Iowa’s roster for decades. With all these extra years that inside joke is becoming reality. This is a dumb timeline we live in. Send me elsewhere in the metaverse where college sports are less stupid. Good luck to Dawson in this timeline though.

My speculation is Injury was to mental health.

He had a waiver for medical hardship for mental health, thus diagnosis would already be received and approved by NCAA.

It’s just if it can be applied to the 4/5 games, that he played with this “affliction.” Can he get the NCAA to agree not to hold them against him for this “unseen” injury.

The crux would be Dawson didn’t meaningfully participate due to his injury and tried to, but performance was severely affected. Thus, he could not meaningfully participate. Stats do bear out the above.

I think you're probably right in your speculation but that argument is just wild.

Are they going to argue that somehow mental health injuries somehow need more protection than physical injuries? If Dawson Garcia had broken his leg at UNC, he still would not qualify for an extra year (per the rules as currently written). So does mental health get a super exception? Are they changing the medical exception in general to mean like anything more than 1/2 a year?

Even if it's a NIL argument, I can't see how he missed any potential money. It was implemented in 2021. He had 4 seasons of being eligible for whatever money he could make from NIL.

Dawson Garcia is kind of an interesting canary in the coalmine. If he is granted another season, I guess they are just going to add another season for everyone. If you're going to add 1 more year for everyone? Why not 2? Why not 3?

X "I like playing college basketball."
Y "I want to keep playing college basketball.
Z "I can make quite a bit of money if I keep playing college basketball.

I can't make myself care anymore whether he plays or not for the Gophers next year. Mychal Thompson got screwed big time, but I miss those days.

How does anyone know this? These numbers mean nothing. There’s no contracts. There’s no disclosures.
I’m not saying money is not changing hands but when someone comes out and says he can get 1mil+ 4-5 mil they’re blowing it out their ass!

Nothing personal.
Just Sayin’
Sorry 😞

That may be true but I think at this point the preponderance of evidence points to the probability that a guy like Garcia would go for a million plus. Payne is said to have gotten 1.5 million to go to Maryland. Maybe he did and maybe he didn't but there is a TON of money flowing right now in certain top programs- that is hard to deny. Why did Baylor lose its whole roster? Money. Why are there 2000 players in the portal? Money.

Yay.....more lawsuits......seems like that is all college athletics is anymore.

I have been all for the idea of Dawson coming back if he was granted another year but he has no case and continuing to fight this would just be dumb. He got 4 full years and a good chunk of a 5th. I get trying to hang on and squeeze as much money out of this messed up landscape as possible but the request was denied....time to move on.

They need to get back to some sort of eligibility standards at some point.

After Florida won the title a reporter asked a couple of the players what their first class would be when they got back on campus, none of them could answer the question.

I get it, it’s frustrating being a fan of college hoops right now and I’m with ya. I was just throwing that number out based off tweets and other posts about what other guys may or may not be getting. I’m not trying to act like I know anything. Just making a point that whatever he is worth we will probably not be able to afford it. He should grab whatever he can if he can. Probably could have worded it like that the first time but the amount wasn’t the actual point.

They left the major reason out of the article: $$$$$$$$$$
Even $$ would be worth it. Garcia knows he's an NBA longshot. Meanwhile, he has a sure payday at this level, probably greater than a pro contract, and he doesn't have to move overseas, at least for the time being.
