Official 2025 Roster Movement Thread - Who's In and Who's Out?

I just went thru the 2025 roster. Only difference from Maxy is that I count 11 not 10 WRs. So, I get current roster at 101. This includes all 15 transfers plus 8 early enrollees. If you add the 14 signed Freshman not yet enrolled, the current, "fully loaded" roster is exactly as Maxy says: 115.

A lot of walk-ons are already gone from the roster. But the roster still includes several walk-ons, some of whom have actually played a lot (and may have earned annual scholarships), and others who have hardly seen the field (e.g., LeCaptain, Mau, DiSano, Bierman, Q. Redding, Conzemius, Shikenjanski, LeGrant, K. Johnson, J. Hunter, J. Tinnen, O. Eyafe, E. Carrier, H. Bruns, Finaly(?)). Also includes a couple of scholarship players who seems to have never caught on and a couple of high-upside "projects" who might be expendable, depending on the rest of the roster.

So, it should be workable numerically to get to the 105 roster limit after spring practice. But, to make room for the new Frosh enrollees, the Gophs will have to cut loose some really good guys who have given a lot to the program, which kind of sad. The 105 roster limit is surprisingly lean; not a lot of room for walk-on development types. But cuts (and/or defections) will have to be deeper if PJ brings in more transfers after the spring portal period. Brave new world.
Always love the walk on stories. Will miss that.

Thanks for reviewing the work. Never guarantee my work.

LeCaptain, Bierman and Mau are special teams mainstays and played all 13 games last year.

Yeah, the good part is that the better walk-ons will now be on scholarship at a lot of places but for those guys that just want to be part of the team those spots are going to be a lot harder to come by.

Thought it seemed pretty unreal that a redshirt freshman could already be a grad transfer....probably because he wasn't a redshirt freshman but rather a redshirt sophomore in 2024. Still impressive to graduate that quick but graduating after 2.5-3 years seems way more likely than graduating after 1.5-2.

He was in the 2022 class, redshirted in 2022, played in 2023 and 2024.
He took advantage of summer school.

Added Nestor - Still feel like we are going to need another handful to transfer out to get to 105 for the fall. Tough to get an exact read but with other incoming freshman not on roster yet it seems like we are somewhere around 110 total on the roster right now.

The staff must have a pretty good idea already that certain players will be leaving if they added Nestor today.

I would assume that as well, the numbers always seem to work out in the end. Will be interesting to see how the final roster shakes out over the next few months leading up to the start of the season.

Seems like there is still some uncertainty about when they have to get to the new roster limits. Saw a story on a Clemson page that indicated it is now by the first game week. At one point it looks like it was going to be July 1st. Can definitely see why coaches would want to get through camp before having to make a final cut down but that is brutal for the players that get caught up in it.

Is there anyone willing to do a roster count post? Like, where exactly we are at? Because I posted on X that I thought we still had to drop some players to get to 105 and other people jumped on my back saying we were under. Obviously we won’t know the exact numbers, but we should be able to get close, yeah?

Redshirt Freshmen Running Back Wright to the portal.

Kind of a bummer, was looking forward to seeing a big rb like him. But on the under hand sounds like Fame Ijeboi is getting more mentions as far as the young guys go. Hopefully this speaks well for how our true freshmen trio are looking.

I want to say it was Sane24 or someone like that who had a thread that often ran parallel to this one with scholarship numbers and what not. But think he gave it up with the uncertainty over eligibility and roster size because that has gotten more confusing.

As best I can tell we are still slightly over the 105 limit, probably somewhere around 110.

Once we get an official roster that has all the incoming freshman on it (not just the ones who were here for spring ball) it will be much easier to get an official roster count and know how many players have to move in or out to get to 105 by the first week of games (assuming that is when the cutoff for getting to 105 will be of course). Until Gophersports has that roster posted though it is kind of pointless to try and figure it out because it is entirely possible there are incoming freshman that couldn't get into school or had some other issue come up.

also seems likely there could be a few guys who will decide to continue to be students at the the UofM and not athletes anymore who never enter the portal.

Good point. The 105 limit is going to hurt a lot of walk ons and those would definitely be the type of players who might just stop playing football but stay at the U to keep going to school.

Mariere Omonode, DL, 6'0" 286, transferring from Purdue to the Gophers? Thought I saw it on 247's portal tracker.

Did a count this morning. The current published roster shows 94 players. We have 14 who have signed LOIs to attend, but are not yet on the roster. And Nestor and Omonode are new transfers not yet on roster. That makes 110 players in total. A carve down to 105 should be well within range. Appear to be a few walk-ons still on roster plus depth guys who probably are expendable. Also, we are carrying a lot of K/Ps at the moment. That should thin out. Maybe a few of the 14 signed LOIs might change mind?

I think it would be a little unusual for any of these guys to transfer so quickly.

Well looks like LeGrant is out, but Ijeboi likely was ahead him. I assume the two transfer rbs were as well.
LeGrant and Johnson are the kind of loses we will see with the 105 limit. Guys who would have provided some depth but just don't have the roster space for them.
