Chip Scoggins has a good column on changing his mind about the Final Four team and how it's time to hang the banner. (Imagine it's behind the Strib's paywall)

"Scoggins: Williams Arena needs to get a piece of its history back

It’s time to move forward, in this era of college sports no longer operating under the guise of amateurism, and honor the past. The Gophers should let the 1997 Final Four banner hang from the Williams Arena rafters once more."

Turn this into an opportunity for a fund raiser. I don't know how you'd structure it, but I'd absolutely contribute to NIL or wherever they want it to go to get the banners back. It's a win-win. Fans get their banner back, and the new basketball regime gets more NIL to make the team better.

In.

Go Gophers!!

The scandals that have happened since at other "blue blood" schools dwarf what happened in Minnesota by a country mile. UNC ran a fraudulent degree program for over two decades. But they found the loophole in saying the classes were available to "everyone", not just athletes, therefore, no need to vacate wins, championships or anything else. Never mind the rest of the student body knew nothing of the classes - only athletes on the football and basketball teams were made aware. But had another student known, technically they could have taken it. What a load of BS. Minnesota could have simply said Ganglehoff's Writing Services were available to all students, too. There, problem solved.

And then we have Penn St. For the love of God they harbored and covered up a convicted pedophile who molested young boys within their own facilities, under full knowledge of the legendary coach and most likely university leadership. It went on unfettered for years. They should have gotten the death penalty. They got off easy with what - a four year post-season ban? Whoopie. Figuratively speaking, we got jail time for a speeding ticket. They got probation and a stern talking to for committing multiple murders.

Hang the damn banner back up.

Banner smanner

It was 27 years ago, is a banner going to make a difference?

I loved the team. Great players. Hang the banner. For everyone on GH, it is eye wash and a lame excuse to raise money. Serious money doesn't follow scandal. Get a better reason than to hang controversy. The fact that it was decades ago doesn't add to its value. That value washed away with time. Argue among yourselves. It isn't the drawing card every supporter believes it to be.

The Penn State thing is and always will be insane to me. Four-year post season ban that was lifted after two years. Oh, and a reduction of scholarships that was halfway lifted after year one and then fully lifted after year two.

It's been long known that Minnesota doesn't support the athletics dept. The attitude of the University has always been a toleration with athletics. Hanging the banners back up may seem like a small issue to some, but for me, and I'd imagine a lot of other Gopher fans, it would send a signal that the University is willing to shift their viewpoint on athletics. As someone in my mid 30s with most of my network in that 30s thru 40s range, I can say most of us seem more apathetic towards the University resulting in an unwillingness to support our dollars towards the program. It may seem silly, but a simple banner hanging with a simple ceremony would have a much more far-reaching effect on a key demographic of fans. Just my humble opinion though.

Make an event out of it and charge a small admission fee that goes towards NIL (with a caveat of current season ticket holders/NIL donors getting in free) and do a meet the team/coach/midnight madness afterwords.

Beavcoon In the Room With the Matter of the Banner

To raise the banner, one must ask to where it went.
To find out, you will have to take the stairs to a descent.

Underneath the hardwoods you must go
To a grim place only a few would know.

A room, dark, dank and forbidden
Holds the pennant that is in question.

Within the walls of a cage one must have the key
If you want to set this treasure free.

Once you lay your hands on this cloth,
Best run as William’s ghoul will come afroth.

Three have tried.
Three have died.

Only Beavcoon and Scrap Iron Skunk know the way
Bring a Guinness spoon to make the ghoul allay.

For we were the ones to bring her below
And know how to bring her back to glow.

Beavcoon in the Room with Ivan Drago and Archbanger Fraggle
Rock on Chicago. Rock on Detroit. Bounty: The Quicker Picker Upper.

Great post. I don't think it means much to anyone born after like 1987, but for the rest of us it would feel like maybe the "U" is ready to stop the charade of doing things to placate people who will never care about Gopher sports.

You mean placating the people who have receptionists handing out drug prescriptions for a psych drug trial, or do you mean the ones who fabricate data in an Alzheimer's Drug trial?

Or was it the ecological studies professor who was convicted of domestic assault and was also found to be cooking his expense reports to which the administration auditors turned a blind eye?

Or was it the EOAA head who threatened the football coach with targeting his players to make examples of them?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Who didn't have someone else write a paper about premenstrual syndrome for them? I know I did.

The NCAA "enforcement group" is a complete joke. Sc$%W them!

Agree, but it wasn't all the NCAA. Much of the punishment was the UoM administration punishing the BB team and athletic department beyond the scope of the NCAA. The UoM administration, those with influence on athletics and that self-punished the bb program should have to attend every home game for basketball, including Coyle with the announcer giving a shout-out to the individuals at each game, preferable in a sarcastic tone.

And finally, celebrate 2 of the greatest times attending gopher basketball games and re-hang All the banners from Haskin's and Musselman eras.
