Done Deal! - MINNESOTA HIRES NIKO MEDVED!!

Warren gave the U and Gabel a pay check to make a DEI hire. I get laughed at when I say this, but this is true. No way Coyle wanted Ben. Coyle had to claim Ben "blew him away in the interview" because he didn't know what else to say. The B1G also hired Mike Woodson, Micah Shrewsberry, and Juwan Howard all around the same time. 3 duds and Shrewsberry moved on

On KFAN Barreiro said that Warren basically said we’re watching you. MN has no minorities in the male coaching side of things at the time.
And Barreiro knows this how? Danny is full of it on most topics so I am not buying it.

I should note: it may be true but I highly doubt anyone of value told Barreiro about it unless it was JG.

Tubby was on his way down and we were a soft landing spot. Pitino had very little HC experience. Ben had no HC experience and was never part of a winning culture. Monson had 3 seasons as HC. Haskins had 7 seasons.

This is the most HC experience we've hire in nearly 40 years out side of Tubby's soft landing.
Tubby was full go his first two years. Then he almost went to UVa, the Royce/Mbakwe stuff ruined his best team and there was no progress on a practice facility so he started flirting with every open SEC job and mailing it in.

I wouldn't be shocked if Warren "weighed in" on who should be on there list. But actually paid them to hire a specific candidate? No chance of that.

My sense is that Goebel just caved to the general pressure around the subject and forced Coyle's hand. If he could have gotten Dennis Gates it wouldn't have mattered but that didn't work out.

It doesn't matter anymore. It's water under the bridge and no one is ever going to tell the public the full story.

Master of the obvious here, but the mwc semifinal win over New Mexico was huge regarding perception of Gopher fans of Medved.
Had csu lost that game, Medved would've still been hired here but the excitement would be significantly more subdued.

Not so obvious really, they played Nevada, Utah State and Boise State in the MWC tourney.

I have no idea, obviously, but that wouldn't surprise me a bit. I'm not a big Warren fan, but I would also think Gabel would not have pushed back much either.
It’s shocking to me the Gopher program has not been able to flex some muscle through all these years as the only D1 program in a state full of wealth (both individual and Corp). Never should have have been pushed around by any outside party. I hope this is the start,. We have two fairly charismatic coaches and no better time than now to fix it.

100% true

Always valuable input, Ray. Thanks.

I would add that even if they played each other, hardly anyone would have known. Only us geeks on this board would pay attention.

I never understand the need to hire a search firm. If an AD doesn't have a list and ability to make a confident hire maybe they shouldn't be the AD. Seems to be a waste of time and money hiring a search firm IMO.
Coyle and Gabel and Warren. and look how it paid off!

Didn't realize his kids were that young. Had to be tough to move them again, but I'm sure the paycheck and the nice bigger house will help

Have a good friend who was a long time B1G employee, lasted less than a year after Warren took over. Said he was a horrible leader and not a good person. FWIW

I don't agree with every decision he made as Big Ten Commissioner but I know someone that worked for him when he was with the Vikings. She said the opposite, that he was a great boss and a decent person. He was very highly thought of with the Vikings organization.

I am sure it will never come out, but I would be fascinated to know when this was actually locked down. I wouldn't be surprised if Coyle had this done before our season concluded (and if it was it definitely will never come out).

Maybe he just hated working in the Big Ten. He loved working for the Vikes.

Interesting. Listening to him I figured him as a solid leader. On the positive side I am a ‘Bears still suck’ guy. So there is that.
