Of course it is - IF they make it the right decision by getting a big time hire and funding that hire to the max. If they are going to just play small ball- it won't work out well.
 






Not sure we really needed a poll for this but whatever. I'm sure there will be a couple no votes (some will be legit, most will probably be fans of other teams). But Yes is going to win by a massive margin.
 

Yes. He got his one, four-year rebuild cycle and it didn't work out. Wish things had gone differently, but the program needs to move forward with a new head coach. Need some optimism and the NIL money that brings.

Coyle making the right decision is a massive IF. Coyle has consistently made poor decisions and handled things in the worst possible way, including announcing the firing at 1:21 AM. I don't care about basketball, which is why I'm never over here, but from all accounts the worst thing Ben Johnson did was accept the job he never should have been offered. I hear he's a good man, so how does Coyle handle that? By not doing anything to stem the "he'll get one more year talk", then firing him in the middle of the night.

Hiring PJ has not been the level of success Coyle promised, but it's the only thing Coyle hasn't completely shit the bed on in his tenure here.

Fire Coyle tonight, at say 3 AM, then maybe firing Johnson was the right thing to do, remember, Coyle is the one who offered him the job in the first place - and never should have.

He didn't fire him in the middle of the night. He fired him when they got back from the BTT. This discussion about it being "ruthless" etc. is dumb. If Coyle had driven over and fired him in Indy, people would call him "heartless" for firing him before he got on the plane etc.

Yes, he fired him to his face when they landed—then sent the note at one in the morning. That was incredibly disrespectful to Ben Johnson, even though the firing was deserved, and stupid. Who wants to work for a guy who treats his employees that way? It IS consistent with how Coyle has handled almost everything since we got stuck with him.

Coyle has been incompetent since the day he got here, but at least he isn't sexually assaulting his staff, is a pretty low bar for a B1G AD, just sayin.

I feel like I'm going crazy seeing these takes. There was nothing wrong with the way BJ was fired. He was told in person when he arrived at home and the press release was sent out before anything leaked. Nobody in the program heard about it from anybody but the AD. Seems like an A+ job considering how often firings get leaked.

He treated Whalen the same way. His interview with the Strib is pure corporate gobblygook.
 

I am a little torn because I like Ben, the team generally played better as the year went on, and he seemed like a guy that is easy to cheer for. With that being said, not sure how anyone can be mad they fired him. It just didn't work out...

Does anyone look at preseason records for professional baseball, football, hockey? What's the purpose mentioning or including preseason records for college?

What? How is putting out the press release (after firing him face-to-face "incredibly disrespectful to Ben Johnson?" Would it have been better to wait and let all the rumors and speculation take place first? How many reporters or Twitter warriors would've been trying to contact Ben to ask him about his job security. This is a ridiculous take. Got it done. Cut the cord. Move on.

Games outside of the conference occur in all collegiate sports and are part of the regular season. They are, in no way, similar to preseason games in the professional leagues which are about conditioning and grading potential players for the final squad.

No issue with cutting the cord. No issue with move one.

There is a way to do this with dignity and respect for everyone involved. The two things are NOT mutually exclusive.

Dignity and respect are two things that Mark Coyle has lacked in his entire tenure here - and is a big warning shot to whomever Coyle tries to bring in here that he will not take responsibility for his decisions and will treat you with disrespect to protect his ass (the flip side is he's a rube and even with mediocre success, he'll extend you and give you a raise so that might counter the fact that he's a spineless simp).

How would I have done it?

The easiest way would have been to tell Ben I want to meet with you in the morning, give him what he'd already know was about to happen—his termination, and then send out an invitation for the local press to a press conference at 10 AM, where the firing would be announced and questions answered (even though not much would be said).

But if it couldn't wait, after the conversation last night, send out a notice for a press conference at 8 AM to the local press, alerting Ben it was going out and letting him see it first so he had full visibility into what was happening. By all accounts that would have been before midnight.

It still would have been late, but there would have been enough time for the press to be on campus at 8AM for the formal announcement. Yes, everyone would have known EXACTLY what this morning's press conference was about. No, it wouldn't have been an obvious attempt to sidestep standing in front of the press and handling questions, which an AD should have done in this case.
