To me it just makes sense to make a change. The roster needs a total rebuild. If the Scroggins article is accurate the chance of bringing in a bigger name coach is probably better than it's been since they hired Tubby. If Coyle is ready to invest in this program that has to include an upgrade at coach.

That's what anyone with any common sense would do.

But this is Coyle and this is the University of Minnesota, so it won't happen.

Just reminder of how people voted last December in the poll on how many Big Ten conference victories the team would have.

I fully expect that many will say their vote reflected on how the non-conference was going. Fair enough based on what you saw.

But what you didn't see was the future potential of this team. Once the team learned to play to their strengths and as a cohesive unit, they went on to win far more games than 85% predicted.

What made the turnaround possible? Good coaching. Johnson and his staff developed the players potential and got them to play together.

And that why I'm voting to keep Ben Johnson. I want to see what he can do, if indeed, it comes to pass that the U is going to commit additional $$$ to be competitive in the player market.
Easy there, Pilgrim. 😉

The word on Crean is he is a good recruiter and a bad in game coach. Not sure if there is validity, but the first step is recruiting good players. If you don’t have good players it makes little difference how good a coach you are.
We have a poor recruiter and poor in game coach right now.

The team faltered this year because of NIL dollars to entice Hawkins and Payne to leave. Had they stayed this would be an NCAA tournament team. Johnson wasn’t able to replace them with equal talent. My guess is he gets another year because the $2.9 million buyout is too high to absorb. We’ll know soon enough.

If Ben was a good coach they would have been playing well together to start the season. Instead they looked lost and out of shape like they do to start every season.

Finishing a few games better than expected when you're picked to finish last every season isn't an accomplishment for anyone other than Ben Johnson, who uses it as an excuse to try and mask his incompetence.

TT said Rigsby may be the best guard on the team (TT did state he only saw the badger game) but still. Also no excuse to not have the 1 -2 bunch of Garcia and Rigsby all season. Sinikyn is flying to IU this aft for the bball game.
In the zone really brought the heat today

TT seems like a wonderful guy but he is woefully unprepared to do that show- he really doesn't know much about any local team. Sinikyn carries that show and is really knowledgeable

Crazy how different the Twitter poll came out:

Go Gophers!!
Yes and No. Twitter poll is going to attract a lot more casual fans who are more likely to be swayed by the local media and their takes on the program. Whereas here we have more hardcore fans who don't really put nearly as much stock in what the local writers have to say about the state of the program.

Plus more Badger and Hawkeye fans who love Ben being our coach.

Trent captures the art of saying nothing as well as anyone.

Future potential of a team where they played mostly seniors. Lol.

Any other BT town has local media tied to the local bt university. Possible a pro team town issue but the cities are basically everyone but a U alum.

Now that CBJ has got his training as a HC, it’s time for him to move on and we hire a third straight project coach. What a time to be alive!

You make a fair point but a new coach has something Ben Johnson doesn't: a fresh clock. Tough to ask fans to sit for another rebuilding year with a coach who has had 3 losing seasons in 4 years and whose high point was a modestly successful season with one NIT win.

I voted no but I’m torn. He had no NIL money to work with but managed to somehow squeeze a few wins out of this rag tag squad. I mentioned on another post if Coyle is serious about winning we need a lot of money for players and a new arena. We haven't been relevant since the Clem years.

There is nothing positive you can sell with how his teams play.. $$ doesn't matter when your a shit coach

Big shocker, but I voted no. I did so based on the resume. Overall record, 56-70 (.444), B1G record, 22-57 (.278). Biggest accomplishment? One NIT tournament win? A single win against Iowa?

Johnson has the worst win percentage of any Gophers coach in history who was here longer than two years. He's never made the NCAA Tournament. He's never beat Wisconsin. He doesn't even have a prior coaching job where he's shown he can build a program, meaning that a person could at least "trust the process."

I guess hypothetically if he had more NIL money he may be better, but it's not like that's a given, and he doesn't even have a promising track record to build on. It's time to move on.
