2023-2024 College Basketball Other Games Thread

Rhodes lost nearly every player. He had 6 wins in conference thus far, in his first season. Interesting. Does his salary wean more wins?

Actually, he had three holdovers. One of them is their leading scorer (17.9 ppg), a second is a valuable sub who was injured for part of the year, and the third is their backup center who is pretty decent for a soph backup. He was able to bring 2 good players with him from VCU. He had advantages that Johnson didn't have.

The coach's salary is an indication of what PSU was willing to pay a new coach and that was significantly more than what the U of M was willing to pay its two most recent new coaches apparently.

You're a tiresome broken record with a one-track mind. Maybe someday even you can figure out that no matter how much you complain about the past, that complaining is not going to erase the first two years of Johnson's tenure and is not going to get him fired as long as his teams are doing well currently and in the future. In fact, the only effect you have is degrading the quality of this message board.

Clary and Brown did enter the portal, but Rhodes convinced them to stay. They only had one guy off of last year's roster that didn't enter the portal. I'd say Rhodes and Johnson's situations were pretty similar, in actuality.

Hugs. Rhodes lost all but one player. Same as cbj, no matter how hard you try.

Kyle Smith and Washington State are having a nice season at 17-6, with a big game tomorrow vs. Oregon. Will be interesting to see if they end up making the field in March.

Johnson's first team would have been much better had Carr stuck around. But he was gone even if Pitino had stayed.

I think the real killer player to lose was Liam Robbins because we were so weak up front in Johnson's first year. Even Ihnen or especially Fox would have helped that team. I think the set of four one-year guards he recruited for that season was at least adequate.

Jaedon LeDee got a few reps in on the bench press along with some curls for San Diego State before the game, but Nevada held court and it now goes to OT.

Pete Gillen on the broadcast is always a treat.

No, Rhoades & Johnson's situations were not similar.

Yes, Rhoades INHERITED Clary. A player deciding to stay isn't the same as recruiting a new high school kid. We can give Rhoades a little credit...but it's not nearly the same situation as Ben had with Mashburn & Robbins, who were joined with Pitino & Conroy since birth.

Rhoades is older than Ben. He was already a head coach. And he brought 2 starters with him to Penn State.

Ben took 2 years to get going. Whereas yes, the older more experienced Rhoades got going immediately.

BUT...which team is looking to be set up better for next year (roster/eligibility)? Isn't trajectory more important than how fast you start?

PSU had only one player not enter the portal off last year's roster. Same with Johnson with Ihnen. Seems pretty similar to me. Johnson either didn't want anyone on the roster, or couldn't keep anyone, it doesn't really matter at this point. It's in the past. I'm just failing to see how, when both teams have one guy not enter the portal, how that's exactly different.

And Johnson could have brought someone with him from Xavier.

PSU can return everyone of significance except for Wahab. Don't know what it means, but that's their situation.

Green Bay @ Youngstown State
Phoenix looking to hold on to the top spot in the Horizon, but thinking the Penquins win this one. If that happens and Oakland is able to win @ Wright State, it’s 3 teams in first place.

Rutgers have been looking better than their record suggests recently. Including the start of this Wisconsin game. Their defense is really good.
