But won't play him at QB. Reasoning is that both he and Weber are among the two or three best athletes on the team and should be on the field at the same time. Contra this reasoning, Weber handles the ball on EVERY play, while Gray may catch three or four passes per game - where is the parity in that? Again, it is just amazing that Gray doesn't get a single series and has only one series in two years (and that a very impressive one, albeit against Buckeye reserves). Not to mention, wouldn't we want next year's QBs, Gray and Alipate, to have SOME playing time this year?

It is pretty obvious that the coaches feel Gray isn't a very good qb otherwise we would have seen him there more. What I don't get is why don't we use him on a reverse once in a while? If he needs to have the ball, give it to him.

Is it going to hurt to give him a quarter here and there?

There are situations where I think it COULD hurt. Not being an insider to the squad I have no idea if any of those situations are relevant.

Come on folks. Lets give the coaches a bit of credit here. They put the players out there that give them the best chance to win. Weber has been their guy. Fans are fans and coaches are coaches for a reason.

Said that, I hope Horton sees to it to give Gray a few plays at QB and maybe catch PSU unprepared. That is, if he is healthy enough.

Gray needs to touch the ball 10-15 times a game at least, no excuses.

Yep, Brewster isn't here anymore and Weber still is the starter. Kinda defeats those that were saying Brewster was the reason Weber continues to be the starter. They still believe Weber gives us the better chance of winning.

However, I really hope we give him some more chances to get the ball. Wildcat, reverses, etc. If we do lose the next few games, I do hope Gray at least gets a series here and there.

Why do peole always need to backseat coach? Let the coaches make the personnel decisions. If you want to start making decisions about who is our QB based on emails we should get used to this kind of season.

And this is all I'm asking for. It could even be in garbage time. I just want to see him get a series every once in a while.

Is it really asking that much to have our future Qb actually get some reps. I dont believe he is just that bad. I think its quite ridiculous but maybe Horton is really thinking that they can make some incredible turnaround and make a name for himself?? After a couple more losses we will see if he changes his mind.

So, is it really going to take an injury to Weber for us to see Gray at QB? Especially in a non-bowl year where the coach was let go? That's just insane.

It's ridiculous that Gray couldn't even get some snaps in the end of the Wisconsin & Northern Illinois & even the final minutes of the Purdue game...just ridiculous...

Gray SUCKS as a QB

Please stop with the Gray stuff. Gray SUCKS, SUCKS, SUCKS, as a QB. Yes, Gray is a great athlete but so what? He throws picks, he fumbles, he makes poor decisions and probably does these things in practice as well. Maybe he could just concentrate on catching the GD ball when it hits him in the hands. What message does it send to the team when you say " Player G sucks as being a QB but don't worry because we think he has lots of potential"

Please get off the Gray stuff.

Wow, ok. You must be a scout right?? Thats pretty harsh assesment of Grays abilities.

It is Brewsters inability to recruit talent that has made Gray irreplaceable at WR and thus unable to get reps at QB

Gray has thrown 1 int in his entire career at MN. He hasn't thrown the ball much, but the phrase "he throws picks" is entirely a guess on your part.

I don't think it really sends a bad message at all. The message being sent is that we will do whatever it takes to win. Yeah, Weber is a SR who holds passing records, but Gray might be a better player.

If he really is atrocious at QB then I would think our staff would have switched him to WR full time and been immedietly looking at JuCo QBs.

I'm guessing diefirma has been to more than one scrimmage to come to his assessment of Gray.

That being said, Gray doesn't look that much better than Web at QB outside of his feet quickness and his potential scrambling ability. In every scrimmage I've seen Gray at QB, he looked as inconsistent as Web. Not sure if that's a good enough argument for Gray to start or not, but it's what I've seen. Even in last years games when he played.. It seemed he'd show a tiny glimpse of his talent and then the next play put the rock on the ground.

That said, Horton knows he won't be around next year.. so why would he worry about getting Gray reps for next year? He just wants to win now, and that involves their assessment that Weber and Gray are comparable in QB ability, but Gray can't be playing both QB and WR at the same time.. Thus keeping both on the field.

I'll worry about Gray developing into our QB of the 'future' after this season's over. If he even sticks around..

I don't see why he can't get some reps, at least in garbage time. With all of the 'pounding of the rock' how hard it is it to run some single-option boot-legs. If the guys not open, run. Even a junior high QB can handle that.

That's actually what i've been thinking since we hired Horton. I had envisioned a type of offense similar to Wisconsin with Brooks Bollinger under center. He would need to run the football, and mix in a lot of play action roll outs. We obviously don't run the ball anywhere near as good as those Badger teams, but it would essentially be a similar type of offense.
-run the ball a lot
-FB who can catch the ball
-TE who can get behind a LB and make a play
-deep threat at WR
-mobile QB who will have simple reads and the ability to run

IT seems like we have the elements to make that sort of thing work out.

The frustrating thing to me is that we really have made no effort to develop Gray into a good quarterback and then next year (if he stays in school) we will wonder why his development has been so slow. I have watched a number of practice sessions and he gets to take some snaps but that is not the same as game time experience. The coaches choose their starter based on how they perform in a practice. In practice the quarterback is not allowed to run because it becomes touch football when the quarterback tucks the ball in and runs. Gray is, head and sholders, a better runner than Weber. He is faster and a lot harder to bring down when he gets trucking. That factor helps to open things up for the other running backs and the receivers. For the sake of argument lets say that right now Weber does hold a little edge over Gray. Which of these two has the best upside. If you are coaching a senior and a sophomore and they are fairly even who is the better player? Weber is pretty much at his best and we keep losing. We have a little chance of beating Penn State so I can listen to arguments in favor giving each of them a half . The rest of the games, let Gray take the snaps.

The people that don't want to see Gray in at QB at least part of the time have to be on serious drugs.

I also enjoy the "let the coaches coach" shtick. You mean the coach that never won donkey for his entire tenure and just got fired?

I would buy the whole "Weber gives the team the best chance to win" thing if he, you know, won once in a while.

It's ok to mix things up when the old way isn't working -- that's how you improve. Continued mediocrity at QB does nothing for the program.

What bothers me is the argument that Weber is starting so that they can pad his stats. It's like he's earned the right to just rack up garbage numbers because he's been a good sport about all the coaching changes. Give me a break.

I have a different take.

I think the coaches don't view Gray as Weber's heir apparent. That is probably in line with a few posters who say that Gray isn't good. I don't think that Gray is the true #2. I guess in that scenario it would be Alipate. I have become convinced that the reason Weber has remained in the game in garbage time is that they don't want Gray to get pissed off watching Alipate get a chance first. Gray still wants to play QB, and I don't think they want to tip their hand about a starter for next season until fall camp. That way, it's too late for Gray to transfer and still have two full seasons at another school.

Just my idle speculation. If that's not the explanation, then it's a simple matter of the coaches being too stupid to give some -- ANY -- game experience to next season's starting quarterback.

High school

Put Weber in at kicker. Problem solved.

Agreed he did this in high school too along with playing safety he cant be worse than the 2 knuckleheads we have at safety or worse than ellstad i think its worth a shot, might as well play him in all three phases.

Horton is just brewster toned down a degree still has his nose up webers ass so nothing will change i intend to boo weber...he sucks not gray!!!

I don't care if Horton received 10k "Pro-Gray" emails, not one of those that emailed Horton is nothing less than a moron. Do these "Gray" emailers actually think that they are relevant and can affect the current situation? No, send your emails, but keep in mind that the "delete button" is a very useful feature.
