Trestman will be the guy and he will be named within the next couple of weeks. Reasons:

-he understands the culture at the U of M
-he is a "Minnesota-Type" guy
-he adapt to the Big 10 style of football
-major donors are on his side
-has a pipeline for recruits to both NFL and CFL

Trestman opens doors to Canadian recruits, probably could get the cream of the crop, and there are good players to be had there. And he should have a great rapport with Minnesota high school coaches. He would be a slam dunk hire for Minnesota.

He would be the opposite of a slam dunk hire, he would be a huge gamble that wouldn't even be considered if not for his U affiliation.
 

He would not be named until after the CFL season I'd imagine, as I hear he is very loyal to the Alouettes' ownership. The Grey Cup isn't until November 28, which Montreal has a great chance to make it to.

What's not to like about this hire? He is everything that Brewster isn't. HC experience, great recruiter, knows the school. I think he would make the program legit immediately.

The next coach cannot be compared to Brew, but rather the other candidates available. How do we know about his recruiting? We don't know much about his ability as a college coach other than over the course of a 30 yr career, very little time has been spent at the college level.
 




Slam dunk hire? He was a failure in his limited time at the college level. Out of all the potential coaches out there, people honestly believe he's the right guy? The only reason why people bring him up in the first place is because he's from Minnesota. That's it. What coach with a straight face can look a recruit in the eye and talk about a pipeline to the CFL? What a joke. Recruits, hell, no one in this country cares about the CFL in the slightest. If he gets hired here I will have to question my gopher fandom. You can kiss this years recruiting class goodbye too.

How is he a great recruiter?

The Minnesota ties are great and all but if we are going to become a strong football team year in and year out we need more than his great ties to Minnesota. Recruiting Minnesota is great and we want to keep our home grown kids for sure but if we are going to become a winner year in and year out it will be decided on how we recruit in the other 49 states.
 

No way. He's definitely not the guy we need and would be a terrible hire. Just because he is from MN, does not make him qualified. I am pretty sure that "open(ing) doors to Canadian recruits" is not on the top of the U's list.

What is this "culture" at the U bullsh!t? I'd say the "culture" at the U needs to be changed along with the head football coach position. The "culture" has not worked very well in either sports, other than the lesser ones nor has it been capable of halting the slide downward as an institution. If it wasn't for Prez B bucking the trend in that area we'd not have a number of the academic buildings, incentives that we enjoy now. If the "culture" is a code word for being politically correct to a fault then I'd say that's us. If there are a core group of academics/coaches trying hold us back then it's time for them to join the real world where both high test sports and excellent academics can exist. Trestman? Unless our atmosphere is so bad that Dungy knows another coach from outside our little world cannot get it done, then I'm for a proven college coach with a history of building winners in a big way. No on Trestman.
 

I would love to hear how someone who played here over 30 years ago, and hasn't even lived here for almost 20 years, "understands the culture at the U of M" better than anyone else.

Hell, I guarantee that Tim Brewster "understands the culture at the U of M" far better than Marc Trestman does.
 

Lets give the guy some credit. He has almost 30 years of coaching experience at many different levels, different styles, and places.

Not saying he is the best hire, but we obviously have and can do worse.
 

Minnesota ties

As for his Minnesota ties, he hasn't worked in the state in more than 20 years. He hasn't been a part of the campus since the 1970s. There's no evidence he can recruit, even in Minnesota.

While it's comforting knowing that he continued to get hired as an offensive coordinator over the years, you would think with all his contacts at different places someone in the U.S. would've given him a shot at the head job in the past two decades. Sort of like Brewster not getting promoted, only a step better. Plus, his time as OC at NC State was a disaster.

I really think the sentiment mentioned above says it all --- he would not even be a candidate if not for his U affiliation.

Nedward Tavale put up on his facebook that he is going to apply for the UofM football head coaching postion (he was messing around, of course). But seriously, if you're going to seriously consider Trestman for head coach just because he went to the U, you should also take the time to consider Nedward Tavale.

Understanding the culture at the U: minor. "Minnesota Type Guy": minor, and poorly defined at best. Adapts to the Big Ten style of football? What evidence is there for that? I don't see any evidence that major donors are really pushing for him, they seem as divided as anyone else. Pipline to NFL and the CFL? That doesn't make any sense. There is a pipline from high school to college, but not from college to the pros. The pros don't recruit, they draft and trade and sign free agents. There are coaches who have had a reputation for their players going pro, but he does not have that reputation.

And why in the world do you think hiring him would cause the best Candadian recruits to come here?

Who do we hire as head coach in 2014 then?
 

If you've listened to Maturi at all you would know the next coach is going to either a current college head coach or very experienced assistant. There will be no retreads or people whose careers are on the downturn. We may not get Al Golden or Mike Leach, but there is no way they're going to stake the fortunes of this football program on a guy whose one career highlight, among numerous lowlights, is a f'n Grey Cup. How can people be so f'n stupid as to even suggest somehthing so ridiculous.
 

Hell No, this guy transferred his senior from Minnesota to play at Moorhead.
