Expectations for Cam Christie in yr 1?

My hope for Christie is that he has the same impact Nate Mason made his freshman year. Not a lot of mistakes and positive contributions to the team.

Remember now, Betts is also a freshman who had close to the same hype as Christie as a #4 star.

One could look at this this way, Ben could/should be starting a 5 star (Garcia), a 4 star (Christie), a 4 star (Betts) and 2 of the top kids coming out of our state in Carrington & Payne.

I don't think there needs to be any added pressure on Christie

Hawkins will be our first BIG ten caliber PG since Carr left so I am optimistic,

But he looks like a pretty short "5'11" and didn't play for a major so we will see.....
I mean I know he committed a while ago but did you totally miss the other PG and likely starter at the position Mike Mitchell Jr.?

This board is sleeping on Betts. He has put on 30 pounds of muscle since arriving. Classified a true freshman but he isn’t in experience or training. The Time Christie and Betts share at the wing will be dynamic. They will likely backup Ola-(not Olo) Joseph who plays a different game. Depending on match ups, the O scheme, and defensive abilities make the 3 a very strong position for us. I really like Christie and a three guard offense.

It would be nice to see either Christie or Betts to have an impact in between Amir Coffey and Gabe Kalesheur.

It’s unrealistic to expect that both of them will break out but it isn’t a stretch to expect one of them too. Both were ranked in a similar zone as Coffey coming out of HS. Although Coffey may have been much higher without his injury his junior year, we also have no idea what Betts would have done his senior year. Christie was in a very tough HS conference and battled some highly ranked players along the way to accumulating his impressive stats. Most impressive to me was the game against Fears where he battled through a bad nose injury and just competed harder instead of backing down.

A couple of really exciting prospects who could really help out and have potential to have special Freshman seasons.

My realistic hope is that he comes in and he's a solid contributor (Amir/Gabe) who knocks down open shots, defends a bit, has moments where he looks really good (and moments where he disappears a lot).

He definitely seems more ready (day 1) than Henley or Carrington. He's more polished than Henley and more physically ready than Carrington. I like the fact that he gets to play with two players comfortable being primary ball handlers.

Lol what? Betts didn't even have a thread on here until after he committed. He's one of the lowest ranked recruits on the roster.

So now Betts was not a 4 star?

I don't care one way or another but loads of people on this forum were telling anyone who would listen that Betts is a solid 4 star guy.

This whole argument is dumb. Betts was a fairly highly rated Junior who dropped down the rankings quite a bit when he reclassified. Looking at his high school ranking is pointless since he didn't have a senior year.

He is clearly one of the biggest wildcards on the team for 23-24 and as others have said hopefully he and Christie can each provide solid minutes and be part of the rotation.

The good news is that the pressure on both Betts and Christie to succeed quickly should be quite a bit lower than it was on the true freshman class last year.

Lol, loads of people or the same person under 3 different monikers? Betts was a mid 3* with his best offers being from Nebraska and Colorado St.

I like Betts potential long term, but the historical precedence for players similar or even more highly rated than him is that he's going to contribute and play very little this season.

You'd be ticked off if we had lost him to Nebraska or Colo State.............Ben can't recruit.....

It saddens me that the pure blazing hatred for a diverse hiring is projected onto players.

Ben caught Betts way under the radar. HS rating? At the time he reclassified he was ranked 87th and a four star. Everyone following knew he going to blow up and we would lose him to a Blue Blood. Amazingly Ben got him to reclass. What happened during his red shirt year? He defended Battle in practice and went from 190 to 220 in the weight room. Watch his ‘22 AAU highlights. You will see the things he did to Battle in practice.

Go to 247 for the article on Minnesota Small Forward projections.

Similar to nearly everyone on this board, I had no idea who Betts was before he committed.

somewhat off-topic, but I saw a video that was posted on Twitter showing Ihnen working out along with Kennedy Klick, a Gopher women's incoming recruit, and several other unidentified people. being a tech dummy, I don't know how to post it here. the video showed Ihnen dribbling, moving around, doing some passing drills and shooting. It had been edited, because every shot they showed went in.

But at the least, it looks as if Ihnen is moving around well. the video showed him taking and making a number of mid-range jumpers and at least one 3-pointer. still has the high release and high arc on his jump shot. interesting just to see him in action. he seems smoother than what I remember from his limited playing time pre-injuries.

Probably the video posted in the “What can we expect from Ihnen/Fox?” thread.

As to the question asked - what to expect from CamChristie. One thing is very evident, he doesn’t (won’t) play any defense. Score two - give up two, would seem to be his mantra.

Any evidence for the "evident". The word literally means there is evidence and you have not supplied any.

His defense is one of the things that I think is the biggest guarantee for him. He'll likely struggle at first because all freshman do, but I have little doubts he'll be a solid to good defensive player.

Christie wasn't good at defense in high school though, and this staff hasn't been good at coaching defense. Christie's biggest guarantee is that he'll be able to score some, but everything else is a ?

He just looks exceptionally long for a wing and if he isn't a good defensive player, it would have to be an effort thing. In the few sets of highlights I've seen, he seemed alright on defense.

I thought he did a nice job on Fears (guy going to MSU) in the game I've seen the most on Youtube. Fears is really good, so he made shots, but Christie was challenging him. I know some guy put up some absurd amount of points against his team, but I just haven't seen a bad defender in the bits I've watched.

My concerns with him would be more on how well his skills other than shooting translate. I think he'll be (or eventually be) a good shooter and should be a good defender.

How many recruits have we had selected for the national 3 point shooting contest. 1. Christie. Just maybe he can score?

Yep, it's why I said his shooting will translate. You really are a great basketball mind.

Then no excuse for a good season?

I don't think there is any excuse for not having a good season. Define good. I think good (based on where we are coming from) would be 8+ wins. Below that and there has to be a compelling reason why Ben stays.
