Tanner’s NFL Journey

Streveler is the high water mark but I think both Weber and Leidner got some playing time.

OC Matt Canada grew up in the Big Ten footprint, was a Big Ten guy and coached at Maryland in 2018 before getting swept up in the DJ Durkin debacle.

In addition, Matt Canada was the offensive coordinator for PJ Fleck when he played at Northern Illinois.

I heard one of the Gopher coaches say in an interview that of the better things that happened for Tanner was the emergence of Brock Purdy last year, as a guy who played a ton of football as a college player (48 college games) and used that experience to step in as a rookie and play well when called upon. The fact Morgan has so much experience (49 college games) and is a mature, 24-year old rookie on a cheap contract can absolutely help him make the team.

I’ve been asking you to explain this for some time now. Nobody thinks Morgan has top level physical attributes, and lack of mobility is a problem. He is above average at some things, which is very obvious. You have always seemed to be having a different argument. Not sure what your problem is with Morgan? Maybe you should call up Matt Canada and ask him why he’s wasting everyone’s time.
Easily NFL-caliber accuracy, touch, timing/anticipation. That statement is a horrible take

You keep saying things but can’t articulate your POV. Fine, I’m never going to get it out of you.

Morgan has an uphill battle to make a roster or PS in todays NFL due to a lack of wheels more than anything else, IMO.

NFL caliber accuracy, touch and timing is the whole reason Morgan stands a chance. His struggle to read a defense, lock in on his first option (he got better, but never got good at this) and lack of upper level athleticism are reasons he probably won't make a roster. I hope he gets on a practice squad and gets his chance. His problem the last few years was not hitting his receivers, it was what his receivers couldn't do after he hit them.

I can’t imagine Morgan trying to make out route throws against NFL DB’s will go well for him. He just doesn’t have the zip on the ball to do that

As Pompous Elitist points out, the NFL game has changed quite bit in the past decade with QB mobility being held as much more valuable than in earlier eras. That makes Morgan's challenge a bit tougher.

I think it's also important to keep in mind that David Blough has started 7 games for bad teams (5 for the Lions in 2019/2 for the Cardinals in 2022) during his career. Blough actually took over for Trace McSorley who got a start. Granted, after Kyler Murray went down, it was QB roulette in Arizona, but the point I am trying to make is that Morgan is a comparable player to either Blough or McSorley. Morgan may or may not catch on somewhere at the NFL level, but there are worse guys who have held a clipboard.

I get what you are saying, just not sure Purdy really is comparable to Morgan. His stats in college are quite a bit better than Morgan's, and he is definitely more mobile. Why he didn't go earlier in the draft is up for debate...most predictions were for a middle round.

Morgan is 24 years old.
He's one of those people who currently look older than their age, but at some point will begin to look younger than their age.

Anything to be noticed by other teams.
Yep, for guys in Tanner's position it is about making the best impression you can so if it doesn't work out with the current team you increase your chances of being picked up by someone else.

Starter and 2nd string solidified

TM is at least listed in the depth chart

Jerry’s qb blind spot kept ol jer from going on to coach at Arkansas/Texas. He really blew it.
For the offense he ran here, he was nearly spot on in who he recruited at QB. You can debate if that was the right offense to be running...

He ran it cuz he didn’t have a capable qb not the other way around. The best part is he had the players to be better but his stubbornness on his Leidner over Nelson decision doomed him. It is delicious.

fwiw; we should be thankful that Nelson transferred out when he did, but agree he was better at throwing a football.

I would watch Leidner play four more years before I would cheer for a team with Nelson under center.

I dunno I thought they were a horse a piece. Had friends who felt the same (Nelson is way better) and he wasn’t all that when he transferred out. Legend in HS but I don’t get the “he was the greatest”. Personally I thought Weber was way better and with all the OC changes it’s even more impressive with what he did during his time here. But that’s just my opinion.

Weber is my favorite all time Gophers qb. He was a baller. 2019 Tanner was the best but the body of work Weber put together with the yearly revolving door at OC leaves you wondering what his ceiling actually was.

I'd still take Mitch over Nelson any day. He was a workhorse and put his body on the line for the program. If there's ever been a heart award it's for that dude.

Plus, Mitch's character is much higher compared to Nelson. Anyone who kicks another person when down is an absolute loser.

Was it true that Phillip Nelson told Jerry Kill that if he did not start that he would walk?
