All Things Grayson Grove Recruitment Thread (Class of 2024, Alexandria, MN; 6-8, 190lb; Gophers Commit!

Multiple posters who live in MN and are connected to HS hoops have posited this, otherwise would he have not been offered by Ben by now? He’s not a borderline D1 player; he’s a top 200 recruit,173 IIRC. It’s not like McAndrews isn’t a known quantity at this juncture.

If this is that important to you, then I suggest you read through these state tourney thread S it was discussed in there.
lol....it....was....just....a....question.....
i only remember 1 post that stated it and really didnt think it was this big of deal......my sincere apology.

My bad- I overreacted. Sorry about that.

TT was not a Big Ten player, period. Maybe after 2 years of milk shakes and iron? Plus you can’t Jack up 13? Consecutive 3’s and miss, and continue to have solid minutes.
What is a B1G player and has the B1G had success with these players in the NCAA tournament the last 20 years?

After the way Johnson treated TT he'll be lucky to get a courtesy "in my top 6" tweet from this kid.
And Ben can just forget about ever being the Grand Marshall of the Vikingland Band Festival....

Maybe take a look at his offer list? We’re in his Top 6 by default at this point and his only P6 offer thus far

Grove reminds me of a young McHale. Both are white. Lol

Sorry I can’t answer whether the B1G has had any success with these players in the last decade or not. But it’s fairly certain that if this years version of TT was your center, you would not have even gotten into the tournament! As for what is a B1G player? Well it sure ain’t 2022-2023 TT! In two years? Maybe, but he didn’t stick around to find out.

Watched most of Groves games this year in person. He is great around the rim, can hit the 3, and is a really good passer. He will be the first guy to hit the floor after a loose ball. Great leadership. Can use both hands on hook shots and around the rim. He was hampered by an ankle sprain he suffered in the Section semis I believe. Great all around kid. He will improve a lot over the summer I am sure. He was never outplayed that I know of this year and that includes Kapke (Butler commit) from Holy Family who had 12 points to Groves 31. The other big kid (I think he is also a D1 commit) from holy family had 1 point.

Wait the kapke kid chose butler? Did we want him?

I was thinking the same thing......Ben is probably not well-liked in the Alexandria area. TT's younger brother can really shoot it.....has good size and just finished his sophomore season, but I'm assuming they won't even bother with him due to the family link.
CBJ won't be around to sign him.

“I’m tired”, sayeth the 🐴.

He’s also in same class as Issac Asuma, so they can sign next year 😉.
So it appears your logic is faulty.

How did this happen, out of all the player development issues how did a guy go from being a decent 3 point shooter, not great but decent, to can't make a thing.

He was guarded closer?
He had the yips?
Ben’s fault?

would be interesting to know what he is hearing from TT's brother/dad on the U.

as far as the summer goes....playing with D1 minnesota will be great for him again. He continues to get better. And getting stronger/improved handles will be a very positive for him.

already excited to check out he and his Alexandria High School team next season. They are going to be loaded.
I doubt he’s said anything to him unless he is a coach on the team. Also, wasn’t TT actually from Glenwood and just played at Alex? Not sure what the parents are like but most really aren’t in other kids ears about stuff like this and probably don’t have a clue what schools have been in touch.

For those wondering about TT’s little brother he’s more of a football recruit than a basketball recruit.

Well you could ask Battle, or Kalscheur (sp). Shooting a basketball is like playing golf or hitting a baseball, it’s just not that easy to be consistent. It’s also mostly a gift, you either have the basics for it or you don’t. From what I read TT could drop em in practice easily, and Ben gave him more than enough chances to do that in games. TT just could do it under the bright lights this year. You can’t "coach" a guy to make shots in a game. All you can do is provide him the opportunity to do it in a game as he has shown you in practice. I like Battle, but his missing 3’s had nothing to do with his position played. You miss a baseline jumper it makes no difference if you are a guard, forward or center. You still missed an open 3!

Yep.....I thnk Tom Kelly called it "Upper Deck Syndrome"......guys who could perform in the minors but couldn't in the Big Leagues.

I've seen guys regularly shoot 80-90% free throws in practice and lay bricks constantly in games. There's a huge mental part of shooting a basketball.

“Baseball (or sports) is 90% mental. The other half is physical,” Yogi Berra.

Jordan ran rough shot on his teammates in practice to toughen them up mentally, for when they needed to shine - see Steve Kerr, who likely doesn’t become an NBA champion and future HOF as a coach without growing a pair. Kerr could do it and Luc Longley couldn’t, per the Airman. Longley had an unreal quarter against some team, feeling it, and had the same stats basically at the end of the game, despite Mike feeding him and encouraging him to dominate.

Well, it's only a prediction and I won't take my victory lap for the prediction until CBJ doesn't sign him. 😂

Not Bens fault but the inability to correct whatever is causing this is a reflection on the coach. If you have ever had the good fortune of interacting with someone that has this innate ability you would recognize the difference. Everyone goes through slumps but a good coach will be able to direct the shooter to get out of the slump. I expect more, maybe this skill is very rare but I think it will differentiate the average from the exceptional.

First off, my post was sarcastic.

This is going to be one of those after to disagree deals.

Not sure what your experience is in playing or coaching collegiately is, but I played a couple of years of college baseball and when I stepped in that box, it was just me and two guys trying to make sure I wasn’t successful - my dad, my coaches or teammates couldn’t swing that stick, it was me. Or is your experience only metaphysical regarding playing or coaching, higher level sports?

My guess is that Battle’s injury set him back more than anticipated and he struggled to find his rhythm - getting injured during baseball also stinks as you lose your timing as well. Time stands still got no man or sport and by the time he got some rhythm back in his jumper, he wasn’t The Dude any more and he did some pouting, evidenced by his poor body language and failed to contribute to THE TEAM in other ways. He could have been a hero by doing so (boarding with abandon, taking it to the hole, non-Charminesque activities) much more impressive to me than any game winner.

So neat trick how you say it’s not Ben’s fault then use some “faulty towers” logic to blame him in the end. As someone quipped in another post, “Ben was shooting and missing open threes for Battle.” I’m a big believer in not making excuses for failure; men I admire admit they screwed up and apologize but hey, we live in a “participation world now,” so sad little Johnny doesn’t have to lose and learn to overcome and accept it, hopefully with some grace and sprout a sack, to deal with life’s other challenges.

From my earlier post and still my viewpoint -

“Baseball (or sports) is 90% mental. The other half is physical,” Yogi Berra.
