2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

might be a great fit. Looks like a drive and dish guy with some length- good compliment to our other guards.

Very good free throw shooter and gets to the line a fair amount (5.7 free throw attempts per 40 minutes this year). Had 21 free throw attempts against Boston College and hit 17 of them.

But who does he dish to? Especially on the three point line? I’m not sure he complements anyone on the roster now, save Mitchell maybe.

Ugh, I really hope Ben stays away from Mills. Quit Houston mid-season, and there were reports of locker room issues. Houston was a better team after he left. Then he goes to FSU, and that team gets worse.

For whatever reason, this guy is subtraction by addition wherever he goes.
So far no character issues under Ben’s watch. He’ll do his due diligence on that.

Garcia, Carrington started to shoot at the end of the season (nice fluid motion), and Mitchell. I'm guessing Christie will be able to shoot the ball also.
Agreed, you've got shooters in Garcia and Mitchell who are established. Carrington, despite his critics here, is a very good shooter who didn't really get rolling until the end of the season. He's certainly got some other things to work on, but he has a great stroke and should be greatly improved with better health and a year of experience. Betts has a reputation as a good shooter.

Christie, as stated previously, also has a reputation as a shooter, and was rated by many basketball observers as the #1 recruit in Illinois. As the Chicago area alone has more Div 1 prospects than the MN-Dakota 3 state area, he should be an asset. Yes, he needs to get stronger, but I think he'll surprise. So you'll have more shooters this year, especially if JOJ can improve his 3 pt shot (although 8 for 21 on 3's last year is very solid, although a low volume.) And while defense may still be an issue with this team, more shooters will help to create more wins. And we need a couple more through the portal.

I agree with this assessment. I know it is on the positive side, but I would rather have that mind set at this time of the year. I CERTAINLY think with a few more additions we have a great chance to take a big step forward. I'm NOT dreaming here- just recognizing it's NOT impossible to progress enough to keep moving forward.

If Kansas and Arkansas want him, we don’t need him.

Christie is a good player, but what “many basketball observers” rated him the best in Illinois? Fears (Michigan State) has always been the clear number one in the senior class. Ames (Kansas State) is probably number 2. Fears is ranked in the 30s nationally while Christie is outside the top 100.

Not a diss on Christie. He’s good. And a good shooter.

I'm concerned with some comments about not needing to fill all scholarships so I'm just hoping we win on any finalists. Get guards in here. Use the scholarships.

Another winnable list of teams if we are sticking to our committable offer here.

Non- Twitter adult here, for the hopefully rest of us, what is the name of this scamp we’re trying to land?

I don't pretend to know the current rankings of HS players in Illinois, I am basing it on a direct quote from Tony Liebert that he's #1 according to "many recruiting services" (I realize that may not be the gospel), and an article here from the Chicago Sun Times saying he's the #1 prospect in the state: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2022/7/29/23283689/cam-christie-rolling-meadows-minnesota-basketball

I saw another article that said 24/7 had him as #2, but I think the point is that the kid can play, and the kid can shoot it a little. I'm not pulling it out of my behind, there are a few folks down there that have him rated pretty highly..

If Battle is receiving 6-figure NIL proposals, that could explain why he is looking at a college transfer rather than testing the pro waters. short of landing with an NBA team, he might make more money staying in college as opposed to playing in Europe or the G-League.

to be sure, I am not debating whether Battle is "worth it." I am just saying/speculating that IF that kind of money is being offered, it would make financial sense for him to stay in college another year.

What I like is that he put up 25 points per game in a tough league and is no doubt top ten in a state that is loaded with D1 players. It feels like it has been a while since we pulled in someone who was putting up 25 per game.

Daniel Ortiz- smallish guard 6'0" 190 with stats like a 2G not many assists but 14.8 points per game and 41% shooter from 3 point range (on a big volume of shots) as a sophomore for North Alabama

Heard that Battle would prefer to not spend another year in college but the NIL deals being offered dwarf anything he could get professionally right now.

But this isn’t pay for play. He’s just super valuable as a pitch man in a city he’s probably never been to and only a handful of people know who he is.
