Bryan Greenlee former Gopher Leads FAU to Sweet 16 err Final 8 err FINAL FOUR!!

Drew Butera was never a MLB player. Don't care if some MLB team actually signed him and put him on a game day lineup. He just wasn't a MLB player. Lots of guys can catch a pitch from a MLB pitcher. Had zero business ever entering a batters box. Rant over.
No actually, lots of guys really can’t catch a pitch from an MLB pitcher.

Your argument literally is backwards.

Open Drew Butera’s stats. He played 12 MLB seasons for 5 teams, 6 if you count the Angels brought him back after 5 years….career slash .196/.252/.290

That means those teams could not find someone better despite him sucking that bad in the box.

We might have two former Gopher PGs in the final four....
Not to mention a former Gopher assistant coach, who was roundly criticized for having a criminal record, as the top assistant for the presumptive favorite of the day to win it all. We need to get tougher on crime! Drugs!

Who's that?

When I say Hurt held his own, I mean exactly that - his role subbing in for Coffey was not to match Amir's offensive output, but rather to take care of the ball and play good team defense until it was time for a rested Coffey to return - I believe he performed that role well.
Hurt subbed in for Coffey because we wanted his brother to come here. He wouldn't have seen the floor otherwise.

The lesson, watching other teams in this tournament is that you have to put together a whole team. Pitino had Robbins and Carr but he didn't have the wings that could defend and go up and down the court. This coming year Ben will have a front line that will be really good, but he will have to have the guards, including a point guard who can take advantage. In the past we have even had good to great starting lineups- Lynch, Coffey, Mason, Murphy, McBrayer but no depth and then when injuries or other issues come up- adios to the season. It has been difficult here for any coach over the last 20 years to put together enough talent to make a whole team.

FAU and other teams I am seeing can run 8-9 guys out there pretty interchangably.

Would he have been able to sustain it against a Big Ten regular season schedule, though?

That’s the thing with March Madness. It gives little guys a chance to punch wayyyyy above their weight, in a very short time and few samples.

They’d never be able to sustain it in big boy leagues.
I hope you were not referring to the BIG as the "big boy leagues".
Their performance in the tournament did not qualify the BIG for anything but ridicule.

There is something fundamental about the Big Ten that doesn't work in March Madness. I don't understand basketball anywhere near well enough to know what it is. But people allude to various things every year.

Yet I'm saying, take one of these little fast teams ... I don't think they could win the regular season.

So ... how do you "fix" it? Every Big Ten team's first goal is to win the conference. But if what it takes to win the conference is the opposite of what you need to win March Madness ... how do you "fix" it?

Will be interesting to see if USC and UCLA will need to adapt to the Big Ten or if the Big Ten teams will start to evolve their style of play.

In a hindsight is 20-20 vein, I would point out that David Mutaf was a freshman teammate of Greenlee. After not getting any playing time with the Gophers, Mutaf left to join a Spanish pro team (minor league) where he led the league in scoring and shot 36% from the international 3 point line. He was recently promoted to the top pro league and currently gets mainly mop-up minutes at that high level - the kid is only 20 years old. Greenlee is a 40% career 3-point shooter for a Final 4 team. Both he and Mutaf were recruited as shooters but were never given a chance with the Gophers even though 3 point shooting was a major weakness for the team - an abysmal 28% in their freshman season. Instead of playing starters almost the whole game, it seems like there should have been numerous opportunities to give these 2 a few minutes to see what they could do.

Good luck to Bryan and the Owls in the Final 4!

There are all kinds of theories. One is that Big Ten play is essentially rugby, and then the teams get into the tournament and are forced to play basketball.

If I could make an analogy, when Tiller became the head FB coach at Purdue with his philosophy of "Basket Ball on grass" which used the forward pass in short yardage and the spread offense into the BIG, he dragged the BIG into the modern era of college FB.
Some new BIG coach is going to recruit fast and talented guards who can score, forwards who can defend and jump shoot and forget about running an offense around slow-footed bigs.

He didn't though.

I would point out they didn't play on the same team, but your point stands. Greenlee played the previous season with the Gophers. Pitino had an issue developing players who weren't ready from day 1. Ben seems to be the same. Gets fixated on the 5-7 guys who play the most and forgets about everyone else. Then the forgotten ones transfer and have success elsewhere.

Who has CBJ had transfer out that had success elsewhere? TT is the only one who is transferring after being "forgotten about" and let's face it, he was not good.

Thiam and Thompson are the only two transfers I put on Ben due to neglect so far. Nobody thought Greenlee was good when he transferred. Very similar to thiam, the only time he got time as a freshman was not pretty so he got buried and then basically forgotten. I think TT could have been better if he had a consistent role off the bench, but that's just me. Instead, he got benched, buried, and has now transferred. We will see what kind of players they will become in the next one to two seasons.

I think CBJ has done a good job developing players offensively. Defensive is a different story.

What I'm getting from this is that recruiting let some talent slip through their fingers.

I hope so. The only two players to have played a second year under Johnson, battle and Thompson, regressed in shooting percentage and transferred. I want the players returning this year to have a better result.

True. But the freshmen were all shooting better towards the end of the year, especially free throws. Here's to hoping for progress🍺

I'm 100% serious when say I could never understand the lack of minutes for Mutaf.....that team desperately needed shooting when Gabe first hit his shooting slump. Mutaf could shoot and was not afraid.
