2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

Ideally Ramberg would not be on scholarship and you'd use 5 IMO.
Ben which I agree with said you aren't going to keep 13 scholarship players happy or something like that. Bring in 2 guards that can break a press/hit free throws. Bring in a big that can hit a three pointer/challenge Payne for minutes. Have Fox and Ihnen stay healthy until fall practice.
Give Reader a scholarship if earned and call it a day.

The benefit of using 5 scholarships though, especially when bringing in lower level transfers, is that you don't know who's going to pan out. Better opportunity with 5 than 4 but I hear your point.

You also don't know who's going to blow their knee out, but you know it's likely that someone will because it's Minnesota sports. You start with 13 so you can have at least 11 active when the season starts, and hopefully still have 8 productive healthy players still standing at the end of the season.

Mason Walters from Jamestown in transfering....6-9 Forward....averaged like 26 points per game and named NAIA player of the year. hes gonna make some team better!
Dumb a$$ question, but does it matter at all coming from an NAIA school? (I’m assuming it does not)

It would to me. Some players playing NAIA get about enough scholarship money to cover books. Sure, you could get someone surprisingly good from there but the D1 transfer portal is already big enough to plow through.

i suppose it does. That is a pretty big step down in competition for sure.
but a matured body 6-9 forward that can score 26 points and haul in 10 rebounds a game at that level should be able to have a role on a lot of D1 teams

On Ramberg, im almost guarantee he gets one. Now I totally disagree with that but we haven't sent anything that says otherwise. I'd also be pretty surprised for CBJ to not go all out to get king simply as a "well it didn't work but I got a mn kid you can't fire me!!" Tactic.

Again, I want as many bites at the apple as possible, honestly who cares if a kid is happy. I'd say the staff bent over backwards to let battle and Henley do whatever they wanted with no repercussions and they left. Get as many guys as possible because eventually you will need them.

Zach Clemence...big man from Kansas has entered the portal....looks like his FT% would fit in well here

Wow! He's a horrific free throw shooter (33%). Former #44 RSCI player too.

If we're going to recruit someone to backup Payne, we should require that person to be at least a 60% free throw shooter.

Maybe so but he can play away from the basket. Something I don't think Payne can do.

The Gopher would be much better with Bobby Pettiford, PG KU Jayhawks

I wouldn't say he's absolutely impossible. I'd assume he lands at a middling Power 5 program. Might be another NIL deal needed but he really hasn't done anything.

Unless Payne improves his free throw shooting (he might), you can't have him play at the end of halves if you're in the bonus so that would be a good place for a backup. I don't know how good of an all around center you can get to come here and play backup anyway but one who could at least shoot free throws would be helpful.

Maybe so, but he would be a massive upgrade to what the Gopher have at the point now

There are so many wonderful players out there that the pickings are not slim. 4 players have left NC as well, one of them being Puff Johnson

add to that we are probably less than half way through portal additions. just over 800 and there might be over 1800 by May
hmmm- we might have to be patient while this settles out.
