2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

It'll be hard to break in with the likes of these competing offers.

If Johnson wants to remain the HC at a P6 school he needs to land at least a few somewhat higher profile transfers. He needs to start winning to have something to sell.

With the new world of the portal building a program from the ground up with high school recruits only is going to be pretty tough. Programs can’t rely on the freshmen sticking around for 4 years.

Johnson should absolutely be able to land a guy like this IMO (Or someone similar). If he can sell it right, it's still a starting PG spot in the Big 10 with an OK crop of guys returning. Gotta sell the vision.

Would have been easier to get guys like this after year 1 after seeing what happened year 2, but that's on Ben.

It seems like Taylor may be a long shot

Sources tell IndyStar Taylor is looking for a winning program with a chance to make the NCAA tournament

Yeah may be a no go with him, but per that Goodman tweet, there are so many guys jumping in the portal.

It's not easy, but Ben needs to be able to find those matches. That's his job.

You got to be in it to win.

Not a sales guy huh?

Ever no just means you’re closer to a Yes
I've said many times that this institution and community are very saleable. Once upon a time, they attracted the top recruiting class in the country. Another time, they attracted Messrs. Basketball in the states of Kentucky and Arkansas and the runner-up in the state of Indiana, all in the same graduating class. What's not saleable is a dumpster fire of a basketball program, not offering much of a chance to contend for anything regardless of the athlete's commitment and efforts.

I see there are some non committed players we haven't seem to offer either, some have school list I would think we should be able to compete with to offer. I agree we need some age into the youth at the moment, but other big ten teams (one example Purdue with Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer) Braden Smith was a 3 start PG they seem to make work.

I wasn’t referring to it on a macro level and sorry to break it to you, but I’m not familiar with your previous wisdom regarding Gopher buckets emanating from your thumb. My comment was regarding the specific recruit and your take it’s hard to land him/ a waste of time to offer him(?), as he’s coveted by others.

You didn’t seem to understand the sales analogy, which is when a prospect or in this case a recruit, tells you to get lost, you smile and dial, cause the next sale/commitment could be in the next call. Unless someone has done that for a vocation, making hundred of calls every month, it simply doesn’t resonate, as it’s not their experience and how they make the bulk of their income, i.e., an aggressive commission package with a lighter base salary vs. the converse of that, as in a pharma rep’s commission plan. You sing for your supper.

You seem to have cast a 🎯 on me and my 🌞 optimism regarding the future; it is not naïveté, but a conscious choice in how to view live and in the manner I live it, based on my life experience and is subsequently reflected on the board - thus isn’t a persona, but rather, I yam, what I yam.

Additionally there are so many landing spots and maybe so if these guys realize they won’t be pros or want to move on with the next chapter of their life and would like their degree to be from MN.

Let’s put the student back into the athlete.

Perish the thought. Nothing personal against you or your optimism. Practicing optimism is one of the seven keys to a happy life. It's just that I recognize how difficult a task it will be to overcome the state of the program to bring in Big Ten-caliber talent--more difficult than last year or the year before, I believe.

I agree with you, but Ben us is likely making more money than ~99.5% of all Minnesotans, so as my grandpappy used to say, “you wanna run with the big dogs, better learn how to piss in the tall grass.”

Ben needs to sing for his supper and reach deep down and get that extra gear or he’ll be unemployed this time next year. Fear/ not making your quota is a great motivator in my experience - cause shite just got real.

Here’s to a good outcome over the next 4-6 weeks 🍻

Be great to see him pull a rabbit out of a hat

6’7” small forward. Looks to be a good three point shooter. Could definitely help the Gophs

His stats are pretty mediocre for an upperclassman. More importantly - with Garcia, Ola Joseph, Ihnen, Fox, and Betts - we don't need additional forwards. Assuming Cooper leaves, there are only two guards on the roster for next year (not counting Ramberg) and one of them is still in high school. Our recruiting priorities should be pretty clear - 3 guards and perhaps a back up center.

Can’t he just be a really tall guard?
