2023 College Basketball Transfer Portal Watch Thread

I'm not sure what team you were watching but Payne is about as true of a 5 and banger as you can get, he was dominating the tournament games at the 5. They badly need 2 guards and probably a backup 5 to Payne.

I don't know that I'd call him a "banger" per se. "Banger" normally refers to a blue collar guy who is more reliant on size and strength than quickness or skill although some "bangers" would have some of those attributes. I just think Payne is quicker than most players his size.

Backup 5 would be the trickiest recruitment of those I think. There are fewer available players of that size than other sizes and some of them are just flat out awful. You couldn't aim too high (because a backup role at a lower level P6 program just wouldn't be appealing to players in the top two quarters of those available transfers) but you don't want to go too low either. Perhaps a good recruiting decision would be to get a big man who has some abilities that are complimentary to Payne's (like maybe one who can hit mid-range shots and free throws).

Pitino's 1st year salary at New Mexico was 775k, his buyout was 1.75 million. There was a separation agreement reached which waived fees on both sides.

In the contract extension Pitino signed in 2019, he had a $1.75 million buyout for a dismissal prior to April 30, 2021, but payment was to cease once he found comparable employment. There was also a $500,000 early termination clause that Pitino would’ve been on the hook for if he pre-emptively departed for another job. Both of those fees were waived in the separation agreement.

None of that means that Minnesota got him the New Mexico job.

Illinois had 9 former RSCI Top 100 players on their roster this season but Clark was the highest rated of all at #32. When I hear "stepped away for personal reasons," I normally think of a player who would prefer to be closer to home. He's listed as coming from the Los Angeles area. His father played one game with the Vikings.

When you dig into certain players in the portal already and teams whom they have been contacted by, only seen one that states Gophers have reached out to them. Lot of them wonder why MN would not reach out to them already. Why are we not contacting and seeing what is out there? Even teams still playing and making the NCAA tourney are attacking the portal and contacting and their rosters are deeper than ours. If Ben can't do any better than the two landed last year....we are in trouble and time to make a change.
We got 3 transfers last year. One of them was our best player and HM All Conference. Last year he had two that were HM All Conference. Needs to find a better PG than Cooper yes, everyone knows that, but how do you honestly know we aren’t attacking the portal as hard as others? You think they don’t see or know their is some urgency to get better?

I see. To me it makes more sense that he knew he was going to get canned and Billy Donovan, who had connections at New Mexico, got him the job.
Doogie stated this on a podcast before the season was over. Pitinos dad was looking for a “soft landing” for him. The only help the U did for him to get a job would be to waive the buyout if there was one and to not speak poorly of him if they were called as a reference check. The U didn’t find him a job and they wouldn’t with Ben either unless they wanted to reassign him to somewhere in the department. Ben and his agent would find him another coaching job.

Man Underwood’s gotta have a big success sooner or later, right?

He appears to have played a couple of games in year two at St Joseph’s. Wonder if he was hurt?

I like this offer. The current transfer portal has taken the attention away from JUCO players but this guy was a D1 player. There are always a few JUCO players who were D1 recruits but transferred down and they are worth keeping an eye on. His freshman year numbers at St. Joes were not bad and he seemed to improve as the year went on. Seems like a good shooter and has good size for a guard.

I don't know why he only played two games as a sophomore while playing 20 games and starting 4 as a freshman. Maybe he was hurt, maybe academic issues, or maybe just personal issues.

Calmese: He's a point guard. 62 assists to 74 turnovers this past year playing at Lamar
Carter, He's a "2". 48 assists to 65 turnovers, 30% from three this past year at UIC
No thanks

Roberts, he's also a "2". 40.7 % on 3's, Patriot League Rookie of the Year
Yes, please..

Yes, Roberts appears to be quite the player and is also from Big Ten land (suburban Chicago). I read a youth coach describe him as the smartest player he ever coached.

Obviously very early so no big alarms but I have yet to see a true pass first PG on the checked in list. Clearly we need shooting and multiple Gs so that's good but also need 2 PG

I hope we pull in one of these guys with impressive offers, but I keep feeling we're going to have to find an under-the-radar guy or a midwest native on the rebound.

...which might not be all that bad. If Ben went out and found a Deandre Mathieu and a Luke Loewe, that would improve the team a great deal.

"Under the radar" is not easy to find these days. The closest I've seen on this page is the JUCO kid who played for St. Joes as a freshman. Mathieu was not under the radar. He had some good offers when he committed here as I recall. The other type would be international players (and certainly not all of them).

DeAndre Mathieu getting a TON of love here out if nowhere. I must remember him differently, a kid his level as our starting PG would mean we are finishing last again.

We need a Souley Boum/Tyler Kolek level (potential conference player of the year) if we want to be decent.

We won the NIT with him Joey King, Walker and the Hollins boys. Put a kid like him with Payne, Garcia and some other parts that fit and you could make a pretty nice team. Key word- fit.
