Yet I continue to admire Johnson's lack of antics, lack of ref-baiting, lack of self-pity, for this reason:

He's up against it more than any coach in Gophers modern history, even Clem Haskins when he took over with a grievously depleted roster in 1986.

The league will be 16 deep and tougher with Southern California and UCLA by then. And if Johnson can show signs of sustainability by Year 4, it will be up to Ben and his coaching staff, because the outside help appears to be almost nonexistent.

Not sure why Pat just gives Johnson a pass for this. It’s his job to create excitement for the program, serve as its public face, etc. It’s not his personality and obviously there’s no energy around the program, but as it’s HC, not sure why Pat’s giving him a pass.

I have been very critical of CBJ, but I don't put this on him. What we are currently witnessing is Minnesota basketball is a complete non entity. Maybe its time for the U to drop basketball all to together. I am not saying this to be hyperbolic, I think this is something that needs to be looked at. Everything you look at from the administration, alumni, down to the fan base, nobody cares. You can't build a successful program when nobody cares. In my view, you shouldn't do things that you aren't going all out for, if you have decided not to commit, then don't and just put your resources to things you are committed to.

CBJ is not out coaching anyone, his one fallback was his supposed recruiting, how is he going to recruit high level players consistently by finishing last in the B1G year after year, an empty arena, and getting massively out done with NIL $'s. So Coyle has allowed a situation to develop that will literally destroy the one above average quality that CBJ had. Nice job Coyle, you just left "your guy" swinging in the wind. I agree a coach could be the one to create excitement, but CBJ is in over his head with just recruiting and coaching, and Coyle knew this. Did he really expect CBJ to come into the B1G and out coach anyone? Of course not, CBJ has to spend all of his time trying to figure out how to coach better and quick, Coyle knew this. Honestly this is on the administration and mostly Coyle.

The hole that they are putting this program in is going to take a lot more money than if they would have just paid a Musselman what ever he wanted type of money. Paying a Musselman type, automatically gives you massive amount of marketing equivalent with out spending a dime. Can you imagine how much money they would have to spend on a marketing campaign today to equate to the same levels and sustainability of goodwill as what they would have gotten from just hiring someone like a Musselman? Do you think that the NIL coffers would have been $0?

So after all that, back to your point :). I give CBJ a pass because he's already in over his head, and the people that hired him should have known this and had a plan to spend all the money they saved on getting a bargain basement coach by building infrastructure around him to market, develop NIL structures, and shake the bushes to raise money.

Man this shit is really depressing. I’m thankful I got to see some of this program’s really special years in the ‘80s and ‘90s because I don’t think they’re ever going to get there again with this coach, AD and university president.

They're not going to shut down the program and leaving Ben rolling a rock up an impossible hill isn't much better. But that's what we're doing I guess.

Even if no fans show up, no NIL comes, and the Gophers lose every game, the program will go on because of the money that comes in from the B1G tv contract.

Honestly what does Dennis Evan’s have to do with no NIL dollars for the hoops team. He got lucky that he came with none available, good luck getting others to show up for nothing. And really you think that it’s Ben’s job to somehow gather up those NIL dollars. Sorry but that’s laughable. Really when you think of the millions that Kevin HcHale, Dave Winfield, and others from some of those hoops teams of the past have made in their lifetimes, why in reality should he have to beg for them. I’m not even sure it’s allowed for him to solicit for that money. I know it seems to be a Wild West thing but I’m not sure your coach or AD is supposed to be soliciting that stuff.

The Dinkytown Athletes NIL group is working on behalf of the football team. Is that group a Football-only organization?

I have read that some of the Volleyball players have NIL deals. Did they negotiate those on their own?

Assuming that MN is following the rules, Coyle cannot be the one soliciting NIL $$. But there have to be ways to get the message out.

I know there is a group called the Golden Dunkers. some of those people have to have a few bucks. Why couldn't they help facilitate a basketball-oriented NIL collective?

I'm not expecting 6-figure NIL deals for every Gopher. But $10,000 for every scholarship player is only $130,000 a year. One fat cat could cover that. there has to be at least one wealthy person in MN who likes Gopher hoops - right?

You are exactly right and that makes it worse. The administration is perfectly happy to be a complete leech. The B1G network, makes money by providing entertainment, the administration is perfectly happy for Minnesota to not contribute something that is watchable and entertaining, but more than happy to reap the benefits from the programs that do.
 

I'd start an ad-campaign 10X bigger than Row The Boat...about how the University of Minnesota refuses to engage in sleaze.

Not one F-ing penny to pay for players.

I'd have images of our FB & BB players rowing a rowboat...next to our next opponent's multi-million-dollar yacht...etc.
 

I'm the biggest (and seemingly only) supporter of Haskins, White, Mbakwe, Lynch...etc...BUT...I draw the line at turning college BB & FB into a total joke.

I give $ to my nice totally-on-the-ball Christian church...I help stray cats...but bottom line - I'd rather be in the gym myself than live vicariously through other athletes.
 

My take is that the U didn’t have big bucks to go get a new buckets coach, so Coyle used a different approach in hiring Ben - I’m guessing this is a three year- four year window max and if it doesn’t work, then they’ll move to a traditional route.

At this point, it’s looking like it won’t work, but he has the rest of this season and next to show he deserves to keep the job. It’s like porn, we’ll know it if/when we see it.

As far as this year’s sorry performance killing Hoops forever, that sports acumen is beyond laughable. I’m in my mid 50s, so football until recently, was more or less carnage with a few bright spots sprinkled in and look at us now, where 9 wins wasn’t a “great” season.
Rutgers buckets is now legit, after decades of being more toxic than a Jersey Landfill. Remember when Ain’t Fans wore bags over their heads? I could type longer more mundane paragraphs, than the one above, and still not run out of examples.

It svcks, but many things in life do - Oh Well, I’m betting the sun will be up here in another 45 minutes or do and if not, Gopher Hoops will be the least of anyone’s worries.

The Twin Cities media led by the Strib were at the forefront demanding that the next basketball coach be a person of color. The Gophers appeased them by hiring an unqualified person of color to coach this team.

So of course they are now going to fabricate things that aren't true to try defend the total failure that the Ben Johnson era has been 2/3 of the way through season 2.

Ben isn't up against anything worse than previous coaches had. In fact, he has it much easier. On day 1 he stepped into a free transfer portal that has made it easier than ever for coaches to have success in years 1 and 2.

He also has the 5 year old state of the art practice facility that Clem/Monson/Tubby didn't have, and Pitino didn't have until his 5th year on the job.
