Bowl Game Projections?

Who is Michael John Stephens?
Do you mean John Michael Schmitz or Michael brown Stephens? Lol

If Mo is healthy I think he plays. He sets a lot of records with 60 yards and 1 touchdown. If that didn’t matter to him he wouldn’t have come back to college this year at all.
Great point. Be a-shame if he got hurt though.

First of all, great job digging that up. I've googled "Big Ten Bowl Selection Procedures" or similar multiple times and never found that. It's the most informative document I've seen, although nothing that wasn't already widely known. It's curious they list the Pinstripe before the Mayo, but everything I've read to this point lists the Mayo as "higher" and predicts ACC teams with better records than the Pinstripe ones. That said, it's sort of a moot point now as it seems our fate is sealed.

Do we really care if it’s the Dukes mayo bowl or the Pinstripe?? Those two seem to be where we belong, maybe the Music City Bowl but does it really matter?? I just can’t wait to see Athan again and show what we have to look forward to.
I don’t but a football game at a baseball stadium always seemed terrible to me…. morally.

Certainly, it could be that the ACC considers the Mayo bowl to be the higher bowl. The only thing that could theoretically help us is if the Pinstripe somehow preferred Wisconsin or Maryland for whatever reason, there would be the possibility of us being kicked “down” to the Mayo bowl, because at certain point the bowls at the bottom just have to take whomever is left.

Whichever bowl we go to, we'll make it memorable.

The 2022 team led by Mo Ibrahim, John Michael Schmitz, Mariano Sori-Marin, Terrell Smith, Tanner Morgan, et al... segues to the 2023 team and the new future of Gopher football. Athan Kaliakmanis and friends, come on down!

Maryland can’t go, there last year. Wisc and Iowa have both been recently.

Agree it is peculiar. ACC seems to list Pinstripe lower than Mayo.

Mayo plays on 30th while Pinstripe plays 29th. Not any hard rule but typically the earlier a bowl plays before NYD the lower on the pecking order it is.

At the end of the day, they’re both lower half ACC matchups with mid-day, mid-week TV slots and unattractive travel destinations. They’re very similar.

Head to head didn't matter last year. So it still stands to reason that Illinois could go to the Pinstripe Bowl.
Pinstripe will be able to pick between ILL and Gophers and they’ll pick the U over ILL.

There, happy? :ROFLMAO:

Good point. In my head, I just run through the scenarios that drop us into the Quick Lane Bowl. 😂😂😂
Michigan to CFP, then Penn State to the Rose, then Ohio State to the Orange, then Reliaquest is dropped, then Purdue to the Citrus, then Iowa to the Music City, then Illinois to the Pinstripe, then Maryland to the Mayo, then Wisconsin to the Guaranteed Rate, then Minnesota to the Quick Lane. Seems plausible.

How does Ohio State go to the Orange when they're in the CFP?

How does Ohio State go to the Orange when they're in the CFP?
Oh sorry let me use my imagination…Ohio State to the CFP, Purdue to the Rose, Michigan to the Orange (after a 97-0 loss to Purdue because a 96 or less point loss leaves them in the CFP), Reliaquest is dropped, Penn State to the Citrus, Iowa to the Music City, Illinois to the Pinstripe, Maryland to the Mayo, Wisconsin to the Guaranteed Rate, Minnesota to the Quick Lane.

So does Utah’s beat down of USC guarantee Ohio State to playoff and legitimately lower Gopher chances to end up in the hated Pinstripe? Please say “yes”.
I would say now:
Michigan and Ohio state - playoff
Penn state - rose
Purdue - citrus
Illinois - Reliaquest
Iowa - music city
Minnesota - mayonnaise
Wisconsin - pinstripe (because Maryland went last year and they beat Maryland)
Maryland - the one we were in last year

But Maryland has a huge national following in Charlotte so you never know

Good find, but that document doesn't say the Pinstripe picks before the Mayo.

It does list it before.

The Mayo pays more, plays later. There's no way the B1G considers the Pinstripe "higher" than the Mayo.

The bowls are listed in selection order. That’s what the document says.

Regarding Mayonnaise - personally I prefer Miracle Whip.

as noted above, Randy Johnson's article in the Strib makes it pretty clear that - barring some unforeseen events - Gophers are going to the Pinstripe Bowl.

but - another thought -
in the 'Bowl Overview' that was linked above, that shows the current arrangement as running through the 25-26 season.

but, under the new CFP agreement, the expanded 12-team playoff system now starts in 2024.

that has to have an impact on the bowl structure. another 8 teams will be in the playoffs, so those teams will not be available for other bowls.

I have to believe that will result in the current bowl agreements and tie-ins being revamped in some fashion as the other bowls fight over the best of the left-overs.

Yes and yes. There is no OSU or Alabama game this weekend. OSU will slide up one spot.

According to the bowl projection guy on GI, this doesn't appear to change much. We are getting dicked over by Iowa having never played in the Music City Bowl.

I know Iowa hasn't been to the Music City, but they just lost half their skill positions from an already terrible offense and they have a worse record than Minnesota. I just don't see how they are perceived as a desirable pick this year.

We are getting dicked over by Iowa because we lost to them at home, again. We deserve to get dicked over.

Disagreed. They lost to two 4-8 teams AT HOME and they're going to be starting their 3rd string QB with one of the worst offenses in football. And we had a better record than them. That's dicked over by a stupid bowl selection system.

Never played in the Music City Bowl? We haven’t been there in 17 years, nearly a generation. I understand that it could matter to their committee but I absolutely don’t understand why.

Yes. There is some variability

Hot take:
Minnesota is the best or second best team in the west. If I was placing teams best to worse Minnesota might be in citrus with Purdue in Reliaquest. But I tend to believe the results of the game matter (also why I don’t see Maryland jumping wisconsin and Minnesota)

Just gained another higher ranked bowl game than the Pinstripe. It would be incredibly disappointing to have two 7-5 teams jump us. Until that happens....I will maintain that it won't. I like the Reliaquest projection against Ole Miss.

That would be best case scenario.

Guys...it's already done. We're going to NYC regardless. The B1G doesn't care about us and only wants to protect the bigger brand name teams.
