The University of Florida withdrew a scholarship offer for Nease High School (Fla.) quarterback Marcus Stokes on Sunday after he posted a video on social media of him rapping along to a song using a racial slur. Sports Illustrated reported that Stokes can be seen in the car in the now deleted video saying "welcome back" followed by the slur.

Stokes previously committed to play college football for the Gators in July. Shortly after Florida pulled their scholarship offer, Stokes posted a statement on his Twitter account apologizing for the racial slur.

Stokes is rated as a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He previously had been committed to Penn State earlier in the recruiting process before changing his mind and choosing the Gators.

You could also send him away for life and still call it a "teaching moment". I think what that poster meant was you could actually work with him and help him grow, maybe take a diversity class or something, instead of kicking him to the curb.

This is just divisive and helps no one.

He's a 4 star QB, he's going to land on his feet and get a second chance. No school is obligated to take him on though. Wherever he goes, he will likely not make this mistake again, because he knows there are consequences.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.

young people have to learn that anything you post on social media, or anything that gets posted about you, is there forever. ask Anthony Edwards from the T-Wolves.

you can argue until the end of time about whether it's "fair" or not.

I hope someone gives Stokes a second chance. But his own actions put him in this situation.

Unfortunately way too many people do not understand this.
I don't think Stokes is a bad guy (at least not because of this), but he is not a victim here.
 


It's really not difficult to not use the n word. He wasn't provoked into taking these actions, he decided to film himself singing (a stupid act in itself but whatever), and post it for people to see. This could have been avoided at multiple stops, but that didn't happen. It's nobody's fault but his own.

Let's quit acting like he's being sent to prison, he will still get a scholarship at a good school and have plenty of opportunity to redeem himself.
 

They got another stud recruit at QB. I think this was the “out” to get his scholarship pulled. I don’t agree with pulling schlolarships because the next shiney object decided to come along. If the reason is truly concerns about racism I think it’s fine. But, let’s be honest I don’t think there is a person around that hasn’t sung a lyric to a song that couldn’t be deemed offensive. I know when I was younger NWA had some doozies that I sang with. Never would say that ever, but I sang it. I look back and think…probably not the best thing, but certainly no intent. I think this young man will learn from it just like I did. He will be ok. Good for him to own up to it, that’s the most impressive part.
 

He decided to film himself using a racial slur and was stupid enough to post it himself. Sorry....but you won't get any sympathy from me. Keep in mind....more than half of FBS players overall are young black men. Florida decided that he wasn't worth the potential toxicity.

Now....nobody is calling him a bad person....but actions have consequences. He'll land somewhere else and will hopefully have learned from this.

What was racist about the post/poster you were replying to?

I'm really, really curious, since black people use that word all the time. Heck, most likely the author of the song is black and used that word and no one is coming after the singer. Kinda proves it would be accepted if the speaker was black. (Oh no, now according to "gopherinatl" I'm racist too!)

The only people who are ever mad about black people using the "n" word? White people who want to use it in public and are mad they can't. So if it bothers you that black folks are using the word amongst friends, ask yourself why. If your response is "it's a double standard!" think about why that bothers you.

When Republicans canceled the Dixie Chicks for their comments about then-President Bush, were you this upset about cancel culture? Or is this a new thing? You seem like the classic Barstool Bro who throws out words like "virtue signaling" and "cancel culture" which are all made-up terms because you never outgrew being a bully and now you can't do that anymore without consequences.
