To those calling to fire PJ, who would you hire in his place?

Well, I tend to subscribe to the theory of "hire the opposite."

meaning that when you fire a coach, you tend to hire someone who presents a contrast to the previous coach.

Fleck was a young, high-energy, non-traditional coach - at least in his public persona. ironically, his on-field coaching philosophy turned out to be very conservative.

so, going on "hire the opposite," if Fleck leaves for whatever reason, I would expect the next coach to be older and more traditional in the public persona. But I would also expect a coach who has a track record of running more balanced or even wide-open offenses.

Having said that - I'd hire the Pirate just for fun. Don't know if it would work, but it would be a riot to watch.

Welcome to the 63%. 63% of P5 teams are .500 or worse (in conference play) heading into the last week. 4-5 teams from each conference should be happy with where they are, but they aren’t. Georgia will likely be only happy fan base when all said and done.

Welcome to sports.

That’s exactly the issue, this program isn’t attractive enough to get big name coaches.

No big name coaches, no 4-5⭐️ recruits
Iowa and Wisc demonstrate that it can be done without more 4/5*. In fact there are plenty of programs better on the field than MN who don't have a bunch of 4/5*.

Today was yet another kick in the nuts. The worst part for me was as Iowa was driving for the win, a Hawkeye fan and a Gopher fan were going at each other two rows behind me. And when the Hawkeye fan said, "Look around. If it wasn't for us, you'd have 20,000 people here. And he was right. Nobody cares.
There were not that many Iowa fans there, not even close.

PJF has earned a long leash. We shouldn’t be as delusional as Wisconsin. I believe PJ is young enough he can learn and change and grow in ways people 10+ years older probably can’t. We forget how young he is. Most of us didn’t know *hit from shinola or were at best less than fully seasoned at age 40 (granted even worse at 30 or 25 in terms of crystallized intelligence) I’d rather roll with PJ as the face of the program in the NIL era than take a flyer on some assistant or G5 flash in the pan.

It won’t happen overnight, but given PJ has made MN a consistently good team I believe he can make the team a top contender with the right financial resources and staff.

.
Hmm...

No one. The calls to fire him are ridiculous. The biggest complaint has to be the overall lack of talent but he’s been better than anyone MN has had in a long long time.

There were plenty of Hawkeye fans. And there was no where near the 45,000 in attendance that was announced.
Many folks on the home side upper level were inside. Most of the seats around me were taken. Pretty close to 45,000 in the stadium first half. Maybe 43,000. Student section was probably 1,500ish from full. Visitor section was about the same. I know a fair amount left at the half, including about half the students. If there were close to 10,000 Iowa fans, I would be surprised.

Urban Meyer
Jon Gruden
Deon Sanders

Someone big who can attract 5⭐️ & 4⭐️ recruits

Recruiting is key
You’re funny! None of those guys go anywhere except where there are historic recruiting advantages plus lickspittle boosters ready to pony up $15M+ per year to give to players for NIL rights.

You got me.

I don't have a name for you.

So, does that prove we should stick with Fleck for the next 10 years, no matter what?

That makes no sense to me.

By this logic, we should've never fired Mason. Because we hired Brewster. Shame on us for wanting better!
Your words, not mine. If fleck stops being able to consistently get to 8 wins or even bowl games, then things change. All I'm saying is for a program like us to take a risk on firing a coach with flecks current record, we need to be confident in the hiring otherwise we will be sent to the cellar again.

And with your Mason example, I don't think they should've fired him at the time, it was a rash decision that we paid for, which is exactly my point.

If you believe Barriero, since the Penn State win in '19, the Gophers are 2-8 when playing teams that are .500 or better. To be a good team, at some point you have to be able to beat other good teams.
Well, I count four wins since then: Auburn (2019) and three last year (Wisconsin, Purdue and Maryland). We can argue, as usual, about how informative the 2020 season is (0-2 against winning teams that year). In addition to counting wrong, he's mostly pointing out that we haven't beaten a team with a winning record this year.

He may have been talking about at the time of the game

Or he may have been outing himself as quoting a stat he never bothered to check

I'd guess the latter. If we're using the record at the time of the game, off the top of my head MSU was 2-1 when we played, West Virginia was 6-6 last year (I think he said .500 or better right?). Barriero goes with whatever makes his argument.

Don't most people do this? Out here for sure.

Middle of the first quarter. It was pretty packed for a game that cold and there were tons of people inside as well. It was a good crowd.

Yep, and the student section filled in more through the quarter. I would be shocked if there were 10,000 Iowa fans there.

For some reason there are a few fans who just insist on saying there aren’t tons of Iowa or Wisconsin fans at the 2 big games. It’s beyond absurd for anyone who has been there. Especially the badgers because the red sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s just denial for some reason. They act like people are trolling when it’s just a fact most years. 10-15k away fans some years.

It'd be nice if we had boosters like that.

I SO wanted the U to hire him when they hired Kill. It was right around the time TT fired him and he would likely have come here. But god forbid this program ever do anything controversial.

Well, I never said I wanted him fired this season.

Even if we lose next week in a similarly excrutiating fashion. Not then, either.

But -- especially if that happens, meaning Fleck is 2-10 against Iowa and Wisconsin including covid season -- next year if we don't get bowl eligible ... I'm ready to fire him.

Long time until then, lot will happen. We'll see

Nick Saban after Alabama fires him for not contending for a Natty this year.

I would’ve enjoyed it: everyone here would want him fired as he typically tops out about a 7-9 win team everywhere he goes.
21 years as a coach and just two seasons of 10 or more wins

Were you there Saturday?
