All Things 2022 Minnesota Timberwolves Off-Season Thread

Minnesota Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards 'looks like a monster' this offseason

Anthony Edwards looks like a "monster" in summer workouts. That's the word from the most respected Minnesota Timberwolves beat writer/columnist Jon Krawcyznski.

"I have had some conversations with Wolves people over the last couple of weeks here now who have been around Ant, who have been in workouts with him and have seen him up close and seen the work he's putting in on his body, his game, on everything," Krawczynski began on his podcast, The Jon Krawczynski Show. "The reports have been pretty glowing."

"One person who is really close to Ant just said, John just wait till you see him. Just wait. It sounds like he has really dedicated himself in this offseason, going into his third year which is kind of when stars make their leaps. And he's putting a lot into this," Krawczynski continued. "I think he's starting to understand the difference between working hard, what it is when you're a rookie and you're 20 years old and what it is when you're a veteran and you really want to become an elite player in this league."

And here comes the mouthwatering part of Jonny K's story: Ant looks like a monster.

"I've had multiple people just say that he looks like a monster. We will see what happens when the lights come on, when training camp comes in and the games get going," he said. "I have heard a lot of really rave reviews about how Ant is looking."

I just hope that tendinitis is gone and done. Whatever the issue it was with his knee.

this will be very interesting.

this might be the first time since Garnett/Cassell/Sprewell that the Wolves are going into a season with real expectations.

the spotlight is going to be on them. people are going to expect them to win - or at least win a lot of the time. if they get off to a good start, it's going to be a lot of fun.

on the other hand, if the Wolves do not get off to a good start, they will face a level of scrutiny that is different than previous years.

the ante has been raised. we will see how the team responds.

Filling spots for training camp or taking a shot for the season?

The Timberwolves announced the signings of free agent forwards Luka Garza and CJ Elleby on Tuesday.

Garza was a two-time Big Ten player of the year at Iowa, and spent last season with the Detroit Pistons. The 6-11 forward started five games for the Pistons and played in 32, averaging 5.8 points. He also played 16 games for Detroit's G League team, the Motor City Cruise, where he averaged 20.6 points per game.

The Pistons chose Garza in the second round (56th overall) of the 2021 draft after he played four seasons at Iowa, where he is the program's all-time leading scorer. He played for Portland's summer league team.

He was the national player of the year in 2020-21 when he averaged 24.1 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Hawkeyes, and was a unanimous All-America first team pick..

Garza has trimmed down. He is trying to be able to run better.

He plays his ass off, which is all that's needed. Come in, rebound, pound and grind. He is unathletic though for this level.

I like this signing.

Yeah it's a low risk move. I like bringing in guys that will work hard. He's definitely not an NBA player in terms of athleticism, but if he can play a few quality minutes here and there that's probably all we'll need.

when you say "trimmed down," are you talking about his eyebrows?

The Lakers are trading with Utah for Patrick Beverly. Gotta assume that Danny Ainge knew that Beverly wouldn't be good on a team that is trying to lose. ;)

Have heard that the warrant was for a gun and "dangerous drugs". KFAN this morning said they had heard the drug was marijuana.

Minnesota pro basketball journeyman Taurean Prince was arrested at Miami International Airport on Thursday on a warrant out of Texas. Prince, 28, who recently signed a two-year, $16 million contract extension with the Timberwolves, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Thursday evening. The charge stems from traces of drugs found during a traffic stop in Tarrant County, Texas, according to a person with knowledge of the case. Prince was not aware of the warrant before Thursday.

from what I've read - Prince was pulled over in TX for a traffic stop. They found a Vape pen with THC, searched the car and found "a small amount of marijuana."

what makes it a little tricky - they also found two guns. Guns were legally purchased and registered, but under TX law, having guns and drugs in the car apparently bumps it up to a higher offense.

I have also seen reports that the outstanding warrant was supposedly in the process of being dismissed, but that is not clear.

anyway - sounds like something that should be resolved - probably get off with a fine or maybe do some 'community service.'

Just on salaries alone it wouldn't work without a lot of other maneuvering. Westbrook is making $47m and Russell is making $31m.
Yep. We'd need some serious sweetners. None of this makes sense for a team that believes it has a window to be a good playoff team for the next few years.

This is a fake account and fake tweet, Shams isn't reporting this.

Howl Wolves!!

Thanks! Just looked at the site and it does say "fake account".

That said the tweet has 1,385 likes and has been retweeted a combined 249 times!

I've fallen for these fake twitter accounts more times than I'd like to admit. I often send to my buddies who catch it before I post on here.

In a recent piece for The Athletic, Timberwolves President Tim Connelly revealed his feelings on Ant and their plans for the future with him at the helm.

Edwards will help Gobert as well. He will combine with Jaden McDaniels to give the Wolves two legitimately stout perimeter defenders, something Gobert did not have during those playoff flameouts in Utah. And the Wolves are going to continue pushing Edwards to be as dynamic on defense as he is on offense.

“We think he can be a transcendent player,” Connelly said. “We think he can be one of the best two-way players in the league. We think he can be an all-league defender. That’s a lot to put on his shoulders, but if we didn’t think he was capable of that, we wouldn’t be challenging him.”

As much as Edwards still has to learn, he feels like the work he is putting in this summer is setting him up for a special season. Everything has been geared toward a breakout season, an All-Star season, one that doesn’t end in Round 1.

“I do think he can be one of the best players in the world,” Connelly said. “Not just an elite guy, but a guy who is mentioned on one hand; that level of talent.”

@jamiche called this all along that if they had the money they would already own the team.

How Jennifer Lopez breakup jeopardizes Alex Rodriguez’s $1.5B Timberwolves deal

Alex Rodriguez’s pact with an e-commerce tycoon to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves for $1.5 billion appears to be in jeopardy — and some insiders claim his breakup with Jennifer Lopez is at least partly to blame.

Last year, the former Yankees slugger teamed up to buy the NBA franchise with Marc Lore — the billionaire online retail guru planning to build an eco-friendly metropolis called “Telosa” in the Southwest desert.

A-Rod and Lore were supposed to be equal partners when they made a $250 million down payment in July 2021 — a cash investment that, coupled with the assumption of a chunk of debt on the team, amounted to a 20% stake, according to sources close to the situation.

However, A-Rod at the time had failed to come up with his full share, leaving Lore to cover the balance, three sources close to the situation said. As a result, Lore now has a roughly 13% share in the Timberwolves while A-Rod has amassed a mere 7%.

“Alex and Marc were supposed to be 50/50,” an NBA source said. “Alex couldn’t come up with his half.”

Now, terms of the deal require A-Rod and Lore to make the next 20% payment by year’s end, and A-Rod is scrambling to raise his half in addition to the cash he needs for the down payment, the three sources confirmed.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if A-Rod becomes a subservient No. 2 to Lore,” a source said, predicting that Lore might end up buying more than half and controlling the team.

Lore told The Post without confirming or denying that he owns a bigger stake than A-Rod that the two still make all decisions together.

Glen Taylor is an either idiot or desperate. Seriously, what kind of due diligence did he perform here? If there's a cash call, how do both of these guys cover?

He put his team in an even worse pickle.
