Longtime Oklahoma Sooners football assistant Cale Gundy resigns after reading aloud 'shameful' word off player's iPad

Oh, I don't know. I'm not a lip reader, but when he went off on the refs in the Outback Bowl, sure looked like he was swearing plenty.
As far as I can tell, he doesn't swear. It's even in his biography. He doesn't like coaches that do it and he doesn't seem do to it himself. I have never once heard him use a word that would be considered even mildly offensive.

Of course the N word is taboo, and it should be, but reading it allowed from a tablet seems like a mistake, not a reason to lose your livelihood.
Most people would get fired on the spot for using that word in a professional environment and I would fire any employee that I heard use it.

That should apply doubly for educators.

If you’re white and you don’t understand the usage difference with the “n” word, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess you also don’t understand why it shouldn’t be “all lives matter” and you are probably wondering why there isn’t a “straight pride” month. Just a hunch.
Your magnificent signal to highest virtue is noted.

You would fire a black employee for using it?

If you can't understand the difference between a white and black person using the word then you have more to learn than I can offer up. It shouldn't bother you that you can't use the word.
I understand the hypocrisy of one colored skin using the word with no impunity while another colored skin is destroyed for using the term. It's a hypocritical double standard and even many negro skinned people admit it's a double standard.

From a doctoral dissertation:

"Nr should not be used by African Americans I don’t give a damn; African Americans cannot use the word *nr*. It is a sign of our ignorance, meaning African Americans, when we address one another with that word. If an African American calls me *nr*, I am going to check him, meaning advise them to not address them as such. These were statements uttered with emotions by some of the participants. It was nearly unanimous, 13 participants agreed the word *nr* should not be used by African Americans. Two participants related that it was okay if African Americans were addressing other African Americans who did not have a problem being addressed as *nr* by the person talking. They generally were close friends or relatives for this to occur." (p61)

Each of your examples expresses the polarization of America by a cancel culture rather than a unity of America as "e pluribus unum."

As far as we know, he didnt use the word, he spoke the written word, technically a big difference in my book. If he read it more than once, that would sway my thoughts on the subject for sure.

The story says he said it multiple times.

I worked in a healthcare company that provided care in low-income neighborhoods and cities. Most of our patients and staff were African American. I was surprised at how often I heard that word. Was advised by HR not to make a policy banning or restricting language. That left me saying, “please don’t say that word” when I heard our employees using it.

You would fire a black employee for using it?
Did that employee take someone's iPad and read off of it to prove a point and try to be an an edgy, abusive jerk? Yes.

There's a difference between being a victim of cancel culture and blantantly creating a hostile environment for the people around you. This guy was clearly in the latter group and got what he deserved. It's a hard lesson to learn and I'm not saying he shouldn't get another job, but if I was Venerables, I would have wanted him out of the room the second that incident took place.

Why y'all are defending this is baffling. Would any of you seriously want to spend time around people that do stuff like this?

Also, please stop saying negro (seriously?) and african american. You can say black.

Not challenging anybody on Coach's use of colorful language or not but have to admit i'm sure that I've seen him say "bull@#&t" a time or two to the refs over contested calls.

That offered, swearing is a choice so if he chooses not to do so shows discipline that I approve.

Wha??? Please stop saying African American?

I will go out on a limb and say that you like to signal your virtue on a daily basis.

It should never be said. It's completely disrespectful.

LMAO. If women wanna say it to each other, that's their prerogative. Stop acting like a little B to try to make some stupid point.

I can tell this is a hill you'll die on. But why not just say black person? Why "colored" or "negro"? It's a little...1870s?
Does it really matter? No. Negro is Spanish for Black. It accurately describes skin color. Your nitpick is irrelevant.

Just like the "n" word is a person's prerogative, yet both are offensive words.

In the UK and Australia, they use the C-word freely and in many different ways. In the US, it's considered one of the more vile words by a majority of people. Say a guy from the UK worked for an international company and was in the US on business travel. He is out with female co-workers for drinks and calls someone a "c---" in a joking manner. Regardless of his intention, the guy is out of line for not understanding how that will be received by another culture (which is not his own). It's highly likely said guy would be either terminated or heavily disciplined by his company.

Adults have to be able to read the room and understand what lines are not to be crossed - regardless of intent. I feel like this is something I learned when I was a teenager. It's really not a hard concept for a 50-year-old man to grasp.

He seems like a man of integrity. If it was the N word, then it brings up the terrible double standard of that word. If you are negro in color, you can speak to other negro skinned persons using the "n" word without any impunity. But not being negro in skin pigmentation, using the "n" word is tantamount to dropping a hundred f-bombs in your boss.
From the sounds of it, Gundy was reading what a player wrote. Has that player been expelled from Oklahoma? Has that player apologized profusely? Has that player received any consequences other than seeing a man of integrity resign because he read out loud what that player actually wrote? If I read Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn out loud to an English Lit class and I read the "n" word that is on the page, will I need to resign while my black counterpart can read it without impunity?

This cancel culture is entirely f&cked up.
You sir, ripped the words right out of my brain.
If I can't say it, you can't say it. (and vice versa)

Very white privilege of you to assume you set the rules for other cultures.

There it is... the white privilege card. Apparently it is okay for other "cultures" to set rules for white people though, right? If we are all one culture, why don't the same rules apply to all?

Well, we all aren't one culture. The world has many different cultures and plenty of different ones in the same countries.

If you really don't understand that white Americans, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Muslim-Americans and Asian-Americans each have their own cultures with their respective norms and traditions, it's either obstinance or you've been living in a cabin in the woods.

Bottom line, it won't matter what anyone says, you have an agenda and I'm done wasting my thumbs and fingers on this conversation.

So, let's say that this is right, that all of these groups has their own distinct culture. That makes it okay for one of these cultures to set rules for another, as long as it's not whites setting rules for non-whites? Are the laws of the state of MN appropriate? They are theoretically the same for every "culture." I am seriously confused here.

Ummm, Muslim isn’t a race. And earlier in this thread we were told we couldn’t use African-American.

Obviously Muslim isn't a race, but the religion has cultural differences that stand out than most forms of Christianity. Could have also added Jewish-Americans if I wanted to do a comprehensive list. The point was that there are tons of different cultures just in America. Sorry you didn't have a stronger point than trying to explain something elementary that could be easily inferred by any reasonable person.

That’s just making excuses for someone to be able to use a hateful word and perpetuates hatred and division. People need to be better than that.

That's not really a swear word, is it???? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
