Fortune: Is Tiger Woods running out of money?

It looks like Tiger is cleaning house. I found it interesting that during the British Open there was little talk regarding Tiger. I for one don't miss his NFL antics on the golf course. Lehman was one under after 4 when I checked. Golf channal today at 11:00 am

Tiger appears to have all the money he will ever need and he just let the entire world know he is 'Not For Sale' to a Middle Eastern country run by murderers who are trying to clean-up their public image

Tiger Woods turned down $700-$800 million offer to join Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, says CEO Greg Norman

Tiger Woods turned down an offer worth approximately $700-$800 million to join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, according to the tour's CEO Greg Norman. During an interview on Fox News that aired on Monday, former world No. 1 Norman was asked by Tucker Carlson if it was true that Woods was offered $700-$800 million to join the LIV Golf series. "That number was out there before I became CEO," Norman replied. "So, that number's been out there, yes. Look, Tiger's a needle mover, right?

The LIV Golf series is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) -- a sovereign wealth fund chaired by Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia -- and has pledged to award $250 million in total prize money. However, it has led to criticism from many players, including Rory McIlroy and Woods, that players have abandoned golf's traditional set up and accepted money from a country with a dismal human rights record.

Before July's Open at St. Andrews, Scotland, Woods said he disagreed with the players who had left. "I think that what they've done is they've turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position," the 15-time major winner said. "Some of these players may not ever get a chance to play in major championships. That is a possibility. We don't know that for sure yet. It's up to all the major championship bodies to make that determination. But that is a possibility, that some players will never, ever get a chance to play in a major championship, never get a chance to experience this right here, walk down the fairways at Augusta National.

"But what these players are doing for guaranteed money, what is the incentive to practice? What is the incentive to go out there and earn it in the dirt? You're just getting paid a lot of money up front and playing a few events and playing 54 holes. They're playing blaring music and have all these atmospheres that are different."

Woods added: "I just don't see how that move is positive in the long term for a lot of these players, especially if the LIV organization doesn't get world-ranking points and the major championships change their criteria for entering the events. "It would be sad to see some of these young kids never get a chance to experience it and experience what we've got a chance to experience and walk these hallowed grounds and play in these championships." Woods even went as far to criticize Norman himself for his role in the splinter tour. "Greg has done some things that I don't think is in the best interest of our game, and we're coming back to probably the most historic and traditional place in our sport."

I don't see LIV surviving very long unless they get more top golfers. I know it's early but the interest doesn't seem to be there from fans. Apparently the crowd was pretty small at the event last week at Trump's course.

I disagree.

They have unlimited resources. LIV can lose money every year, millions and millions, and continue moving forward. Making money was never their ultimate goal I suspect. Greg Norman said the other day that next year is really the first year for LIV Golf.

This will continue to gain momentum, a few more big names here and there, it's not stopping anytime soon. They are going to force the PGA Tour into making some major changes, they already have. The PGA Tour's decision to make this as combative and confrontational as possible wasn't the greatest decision.

I haven't watched any of it yet, but I probably would if it was available on more platforms.

I give it two or three years. They are shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars for second rate golfers....which means that they'll never actually do anything but lose astronomical amounts of money. Also....the four player team draft format is a gimmick.

I think majority of golf fans will still pay more attention to the one that has the most talented players.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. There's money, and then there's Saudi oil money. LIV to the Saudi's is like a Sunday at Canterbury for most people.

That's true. Just depends on HOW much they are willing to dump into it. Nine figures to bring in fringe top fifteen-twenty players will add up if they can actually convince some more to jump ship. But right now they are paying exorbitant amounts to bring in guys who most people don't give a damn about.

100%. It's a hobby, not much more, they can afford to lose essentially an infinite amount.

The PGA Tour players won't say it openly but they are loving this. It's making a dent, the PGA Tour and their idiotic commissioner have botched this from the beginning but they are at least finally adjusting.

Heard this morning that for a number of the bigger PGA Tour events next season, the total purse "magically" increased from roughly $12M to $20M. Zero, ZERO chance that happens without the LIV pressure.

And I also agree with Greg Norman on another thing; why can't the two tours peacefully co-exist? Seems petty and reactionary for the PGA Tour to start trying to ban these guys. They are going to lose, and they are going to lose big.

Poor leadership within the PGA Tour over the years is what gave birth to LIV and poor leadership is what has put them in this situation.

Competition baby.

Maybe a future Ryder Cup format tournament: PGA vs LIV golfers with trash talking encouraged. Let's go!

Go Tom Lehman!!

I don’t believe Greg Norman had any intention of LIV peacefully coexisting. He’s had a burr in his saddle against the PGA for decades.

I’m an avid golfer and golf watcher (I enjoy watching the LPGA as much as the PGA). I tried watching some of the LIV on YouTube and found it lacking. It feels gimmicky. I thought the shotgun start was intriguing, but it actually makes it less interesting to watch. The flow seems odd not having the normal tee time method. But most importantly, with so much guaranteed money, it just doesn’t seem like the competition for winning has the same importance.

So far, all the big names that have left for LIV don’t move the needle for me. All my golfing friends express similar feelings. LIV will exist as long as Saudi Arabia is willing to fund it. I guess those millions of dollars might as well be in the players bank accounts versus the Saudi’s.

I think the LPGA will actually work to coexist with LIV. The women make so much less, I don’t think they can fight LIV.

I think a shotgun start could or even should be implemented for early rounds, regular fields could have half the field morning then other half afternoon. Would have to double up groups on Par 5s, and limit field to probably 124, going as 3s.

Final round should always be set Tee Times.

54 holes is a joke.

I would like to be a fly on the wall at this proposed meeting.

To me, this is an indication the PGA is worried. Tiger isn't doing this just to hang with the guys for an hour or so.

Go Tom Lehman!!
