Saw a report. Rossi to Oklahoma state???

There was this yesterday:

And then an article on Pokes Report saying they were not buying that, and guessed at a few others, which included Rossi: https://pokesreport.com/s/2199/repo...a-state-defensive-coordinator-were-not-buying

We believe that North Carolina State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson, Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Rossi, UAB defensive coordinator David Reeves, and Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk are potential candidates.

Pokes Report: *Looks at top few defenses in the country; Makes list of the defensive coordinators on those teams (coordinators on perceived "no-name" schools given an extra check mark because they don't know what hell they're stuck in and would be forever grateful to immediately jump to Oklahoma St.); Double-checks names are spelled correctly; Adds names in last paragraph of article and calls them "potential candidates".*

Rossi leaving would hurt a lot, especially with Harasymiak no longer on the staff.

Didn't he just get an extension?
Yeah, he’s set to make $800k next year. There are a good number of schools that could offer a 50% raise if they wanted to. One thing I think we have working in our favor is how quietly the defense excelled this year. They were not flashy with a ton of turnovers or big stars, and I’m sure the average fans of those programs would be very surprised to see that Minnesota had an elite defense last year. Another thing in our favor is how bad the defense was last year. Some head coaches might be uneasy about paying a DC $1 million+ based on one good season.

I don't see why Rossi would leave Minnesota. The Big 12 might not even exist like it is in a few years. I think coaches are also seeing that Minnesota is not the recruiting black hole that it used to be, especially with the athletes we've been able to recruit over the last several years

technically, anyone who coaches defense is a "potential candidate."

it's a clickbait story. "We believe" these are potential candidates - based on what? Is this based on a legitimate tip or source, or it is based on "hey, these are some good DC's who might be possible candidates."

no different than Fleck being floated as a "potential candidate" for every HC opening.

Please say it is just rumors. Plus - Okla.State would be a lateral move at best. Perhaps they can pay a sxxx pot more money as T.Boone Perkins left millions to Okla. State football.

That’s a lateral move. Going to a helmet school Maybe, Smellwater Okie = no way🥴
Buck up chicken littles the sky is not falling.

I have a hard time believing that Minnesota couldn't match whatever salary Oklahoma State is offering. For example, Fleck makes 25% more than Gundy. Stillwater makes Minneapolis look like an urban oasis. The Big 10 is on a much better trajectory than the Big 12. Rossi coached one of the leading defenses in the country last year and would be a realistic candidate for much more attractive jobs. This move wouldn't make sense for him.

2019 defense was pretty solid too, as was second half that he took over in 2018.

Technically, a D-Coordinator taking another D-Coordinator position is a lateral move. However, OK State has finished ahead of Minnesota in the final rankings in 4 of the last 5 years and was only 7 behind in 2019. But when you're second fiddle in your own state like OK State is, I don't know if that job is more attractive than an up and coming team in a very competitive division.

I don't think it's happening though.

My guess is it's like post #5. Anyone can throw anything out in an article, to get people to click on it. And the article wasn't specifically about Rossi, at all.

Per On3 Sports Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason is set to move to Oklahoma St and Auburn linebackers coach/assistant head coach Jeff Schmedding is set to be promoted to defensive coordinator at Auburn. Seems like we can put the Rossi rumors to rest for now.

They will always be there. He is to good of a coach for other teams not to go after him. We can only hope that he loves it here and they can keep his contract competitive

For all we know Rossi wants to stay a few more years and build on last season and put himself in a position to be a HC down the road😃

If there are no sources, it's not a "report." Saying "we believe" is a whole lot different than "a source close to the situation" is telling us this. Unsourced information is basically 99 percent of the internets.
Also to me potential candidate sounds like anyone you can imagine, where as a candidate is actually being interviewed or at least spoken to about the position.

It’s not even that sourced. It’s “we hope but it’s not even ‘likely’”. Sleep well.

Oklahoma State would be a step down. It is basically a community college.
Academically/research wise, it's the same thing as NDSU and SDSU. Just a larger student body because it's a more populous state (and also probably pull a fair number of kids from KC and Dallas). And then they have oilmen donors, so a lot more money.
