National Signing Day, and off we go!

I think Anthony Smith becomes a DT. He is a pretty big dude already, but I echo your excitement about him. He moves really well.

My big ones are Knuth, Hoskins, and Kelly.

Knuth: He is just a higher caliber (as was Athan) QB recruit. He seems to have prototypical size, makeup. There is also the fact that everyone from South Dakota gushes about him. I know, they are likely as provincial as we are, I get it, but sometimes you just know.

Kelly: He is a 6'2" CB. Having that kind of size at CB (if they can cover), allows you to do a lot of things. If we find another star to play opposite Walley, watch out.

Hoskins: I realize he did the things he did against central MN kids. That said, he is electric. He is explosive, dynamic, seems like a natural pass catcher and he is legitimately fast.
would love to see him on the field for kicks/punts this year. the kid can move and we've been a black hole for years back there returning the ball since we lost Myrick aside from the occasional electricity when AWJr got to return

I'm interested in Zach Evans (highly ranked) and Stapp (proven commodity at ACU)

Wow, if Kelly can be a good corner........ I posted a while a back that if we can go one on one on the outside, it opens up your defense to do so many things. We already have that guy in Walley on one side of the field. If Walley stays the next 3 years, we just need to find one other corner to pair with him. Our defensive line recruits from last year and this year are of high quality. Maybe we can put together a somewhat dominant defense in a few years.

Honestly, for better or worse, I think the days of many kick/punt returns is over.

I like Hoskins. I think he could be somewhere between JD Spielman and Rondale Moore. Really excited to see how he develops.

I'm also excited for Knuth and that we finally landed a highly ranked SD player. Typically they go to Nebraska or Iowa.

This could turn out well as there will still be some big names out there for February. Maybe we trade Pyburn for someone better.
Or a transfer.

Or a transfer.
With a guy like Pyburn, what if he comes up here and plays well. His heart seems to be in Florida. Who is to say he doesn't just turnaround and head back to Florida in the portal, because he's now wanted after playing well.

I kind of hope they move on here.

Pyburn is not a surprise given those who signed at his position rated more highly than him. Use the scholarship on an impact transfer when he inevitably does not sign here.
Calm down. I'd rather he take time to figure things out, it's better he not come here at all if he just ends up leaving after a year or two.

His twitter shows really nothing of being a Boat Rower. Says he's committed here, but also saw he had a lot of late offers come in. We shall see.

I’d wager it’s more than 50% verbals who do not sign inevitably end up elsewhere. Especially with a coach like Fleck who doesn’t wait around (though bet he would if they were a 5 ⭐️)

Some what disappointed in that we didn’t make any waves in the portal. RTB should be home to several players who want to use up their eligibility in grand style.

Isn't the portal stuff still happening? They don't have to sign today, do they?

Most of what you said, I agree - i.e. leaving after a year or two. However, he's had 6-month of time to soul search playing for the Gophers. If he doesn't know by now, it is best for both parties to move on. He's a decent player; but not one worth pining about over the next few months.

Still happening. We have a ton of players coming back and the staff may just like the younger players they have. Also there is another signing period in Feb-April.

Heck Arkansas had three kids jump in the portal today. Lots of movement to come and nationally, more Assistant Coaches will be on the move during the off-season.

Many factors play into filling a class.

Today isn't the final day for the transfer portal and there are tons of players still in it. I wouldn't be shocked to still see a few more transfers come on board. May be some holdup waiting on guys with eligibility left to make final decisions about 2022.

As a point of reference (I believe these are correct), the following portal players committed on the following dates:

Jack Gibbens - December 4th
Val Martin - December 23rd
Dylan Wright- December 23rd
Nyle Pickney - January 7th
Karter Shaw - January 14th
Matthew Trickett - February 4th

Fleck has always described it as signing day is like the draft with the free agency (portal) following after.

So I don't think we're done with the portal. Only Jack Gibbens was signed by early signing day last year.

Maybe we are starting a tradition where our yearly Abilene Christian guy signs on the early signing day and the rest come on board later :)

I don't think we are done either, but I also don't think we are trying to plug as many holes this year, so I'd be surprised if we took as many transfers.

Can they sign guys that late?
Sure. Why not?

I don't think there's really anything to "sign", there. Simply, the player transfers to the U, for say the summer semester and starts living and working out up here. On the athletic dept's side, they put in the paper work (if even needed?) to do the transfer eligibility.

I mean honestly ... they probably could transfer in right before fall camp starts, and enroll for the fall semester.

I don't think there's anything "binding" equivalent to the NLI, like kids out of high school physically sign.

I'd be interested to see the stats, you may very well be correct.

I trust Fleck to read the situation. Doesn't hurt anything to wait for the kid, it's not like Fleck will stop recruiting until the kid decides.
