Gophers in the portal

We're fine at wideout. Though I'd feel a lot better if CAB comes back.
I mean I'm not panicking, but are we fine? I'd say we're ok if CAB is back, but DJ and MBS, while they have flashed some talent, aren't real proven commodities right now, and we don't know what we have behind them. I had high hopes for Boyd, but oh well best of luck to him. I know we've recruited some talented kids like Brockington, but I can't say with confidence that we are fine until someone shows that they are ready to make a big leap. Even CAB isn't an ideal #1 IMO.

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot about Wright, who has huge upside, but hasn't shown that he's a consistent threat, yet.

I'd think BSF stays involved next year. Jackson, Wright and MBS are capable with the right play-calling. I'd think Brockington and Emilien come along as well.

I'm higher on Jackson than most probably.

Good set of backs that should be able to help out as well.

Good question. I'm not sold on any of the WRs behind Autman-Bell. I did hear one of the Burnses (Derek, I think it was) on their podcast mentioning that Boyd seems to get himself open very often. Burns surmised that he was probably the second or third (or lower) option on most of those plays, but he was impressed at how he got open.

@Dragon21 sorry to see your Nephew(?) go.

Any further read or details you care to/feel comfortable sharing?

I just guess I wonder ... why did he come up to Minnesota, if he was just going to end up back at a Texas school? Nothing wrong with giving it a chance. Did he feel like his true freshman experience didn't quite live up to what his recruiting made it sound like it would be?

Thanks for joining us, regardless.
Grandson, Sir. I really don't know.

Thanks for wasting a scholarship we could've used on someone else....good luck elsewhere, but I'm far from thankful for him taking up space for a year.

Yeah, losing Boyd hurts. He'll put numbers at TT.

You have no idea why this kid is transferring. By all accounts he was a good representative of the university during his time here. Kids transfer, it happens, get over it and don't bash them like this. You don't know that he didn't have some positive impact on the practice field, weight room, or in the community, but call his scholarship a waste. Shame on you.

I didn't bash him first of all. But his scholarship was a waste, and this program will be a dumpster fire if others did this in mass.

Yeah how dare a true freshman not come in and catch 50 passes his first year. Why can't we just accept when guys transfer? I'm disappointed to lose a talented player, but there's no need to act like a jealous ex-girlfriend over it.
We don't have to be thankful and act like he did us a favor either.

"Gophers true freshman receiver Brady Boyd has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Thursday.
Boyd played in nine games and had two receptions for 18 yards in 2021 season.

Boyd played high school football at Southlake Carroll, Texas, along with top-rated quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers announced he would transfer from Ohio State last week and Yahoo Sports reported Ewers was “expected to attempt to lure some talent with him” to the next destination. Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech were listed as three possible destinations.
Boyd is the 11th player from the Gophers’ 2021 roster to depart"

How do you know it was a waste? He saw the field quite a bit too. Just because he didn't catch a lot of balls doesn't mean he didn't have an impact.
Maybe he did or didn't have an impact on this team. But so far I have seen this board blow up over the other ten players that are hitting the portal. Personally I think Minnesota is a great university and Fleck and his staff are greatness.

But was the impact worth potentially not getting another WR? Was it worth the time our staff put into him that could have been spent elsewhere? No.

I will cheer for the guys who showed a commitment to the program and decided to go elsewhere for playing time (ZA, Clark). I get that and I will cheer for them.

For a guy like Boyd who definitely would have gotten playing time and left for perceived greener pastures after one year, I am not grateful for what they gave to the program.

I'm not going to bash him, it's his choice and I get it. But we also don't have to treat him like he did us any sort of favor.

I think he's a good football player and he'll show it at Texas Tech, but he's not one of us.

Glad to hear someone from the outside say that. I'd hate to have some of these fans give us a bad reputation. The BB transfer is drawing more reaction largely because 1. There were high hopes for him going forward. 2. He seemed to have a big role coming his way, compared to some of these other guys who were transferring to get more playing time. I'd say this one and MJ Anderson are the biggest hits, but that's how it goes.

I think there is a difference between people buried on the depth chart and people who have a clear path to PT.

Boyd isn't in the group of like Dunlap, Cheney, and Anderson who quit on their teammates. But he also isn't in the group with like ZA, Clark, Gordon who left for playing time.

I don't think the board has hard feelings towards Boyd but at the same time, I don't think anyone will root for him like they will ZA, Clark, etc.

I guess this isn't that different from what I was trying to say. I'm not going to go out and buy a BB Texas Tech jersey, I just don't like when people come out to trash a kid who decides to transfer, especially when we don't know their reasons. In 3-4 years we will have mostly forgotten about him, and that's fine for all parties involved.

If Boyd came here with the intention of ditching us after a year, that's a different story, but I have no reason to think that's the case.

I hear you.

I see you've been on Gopherhole for about two years. Normal people will forget, we will NEVER forget if he turns out to be good (see Chris Strieveler and even JJ Watt).

LOL, I have posted here for two years, but I've been lurking ever since this was Brew's Crew Football Forum.

Heck I assume some of us still remember Nate Andrews decommitting and being a freshman all american who started for FSU when they win the title. The Hole never forgets.

I read that as MPLS thanking his grandfather for being a part of our board, which I really appreciate - it's cool when that happens. IIRC Jeff Wills' dad posted here for a bit back in the day.
lol you might be right on that. Clearly I'm getting a little annoyed by the state of college football these days.
