Marcus tweet on Coleman's upcoming visit to Iowa St: "Uh-Oh"

lol, i talking about the whole PROGRAM, meaning the whole PACKAGE! ISU academics are not even close to the U of M's. I would rather go to Winona State than ISU. Plus look at the location, U of M is in downtown Minneapolis on the river. Ames is in the middle of a cornfield. Coach: Hoiberg- not even 1 season Tubby- More national championships than hoiberg has coached. Not to mention Coleman is a gopher name, see he uncle and brother, Joe was a ball boy for the gophs not that long ago. All im saying is, if you were unbiased and you were Joe, what looks more attractive.

ISU is ranked 88 according to US News and World Reports, Minnesota is 61. Both are AAU institutions. You act like ISU is a Tier 3 education. I am well aware of the locations of the Universities and I am also well aware that many recruits pick ISU because it is NOT in a massive town with major crime (not saying Minneapolis has major crime, just saying in general) and they like the smaller town feel of things.

Tubby is a more established coach, but that does not guarantee that Minnesota will be better than ISU while he is in school or that he will play more at Minnesota. Which looks more attractive if I am Joe? Which one do I get along with the staff better? Which one has the major I want? Which one has more of a need for me or plays more the style I want to play? These are the questions that I and you do not know that answer to. And if the answer was as clear cut as you make it out to be we would not be having this discussion because Joe would have already committed to the U right?

Fair enough, pick on the new guy. You've got me beat by 18 posts, and countless years of GopherHole experience to my one year of lurking.

But after all, it is a message board. It's not like anyone believes anything posted on here.

You lurked for a year and opted to make your second post about me posting here? I feel honored. But this board has existed much longer than the numbers here show. I had hundreds of posts on the old board, not that it makes a difference. I enjoyed the series ISU had with Minnesota and the NCAA game we played and used to do a lot of posting here. Wish they would bring the series back but if Fred is going to make Minnesota a priority Tubby will want no part of giving him any exposure there.

Are the issues basketball related, or personal? Can it be fixed? Not that I trust rivals, but Coleman doesn't have the Gophers in his top 5 according to his profile.

Are you looking under the right Coleman??

Rivals most certainly does have Minnesota in Coleman's top five in his profile.

In fact, in the most recent Rivals article (today), Coleman is quoted as saying, "Minnesota is like a second home to me. Coach (Ron) Jirsa and coach Tubby Smith have watched all of my games (this summer) and they will be down in Kansas City again."

FarmerClone is a good dude and longtime contributor to GH. He is usally very balanced in his views and I enjoy his contributions, FWIW.

Go Gophers!!

Up-tempo means an offense that scores a lot. Most of those seasons, Tubby's teams were in Top 25 of Div I offenes (per KenPom).

That is specifically what it does NOT mean. "Up-tempo" refers to pace. If you are using KenPom efficiency statistics as the litmus test of up-tempo, then Bo Ryan is a big teacher of up-tempo basketball. I doubt that argument would go over very well on this board.

Up-tempo <> better. You don't have to come to Tubby's rescue if someone claims his teams haven't been up-tempo.

I think I know what Johnny is referring to. Here's hoping that visiting a few schools helps Coleman feel good about his position and ready to commit to the U.

But Tubby's teams (most, not all) HAVE played up-tempo. Tulsa, Georgia, and UK. Most Gopher fans know him only since 2007. I've been aware of his career (results) for almost 20 years.

Recruits don't care about pace. They want to play in a high scoring offensive style.

Cause for Concern?: Tubby, recruiting efforts, program direction, etc.

(new thread)

I think I've just witnessed the best hijack of a thread ever. I mean this good!

If we assume for a second that you know what recruits care about and don't, you are mixing the terms. A previous poster showed all of the tempo statistics for Tubby's teams back as far as Pomeroy has them and they simply weren't playing up-tempo. Read Gasaway and Hollinger and you'll see that you're misusing tempo. They talk about tempo-free stats and what they are pulling out of the calculations are the number of possessions a team uses every game to determine efficiency.

Apparently, though, whatever it is that Tubby does, we at least know one recruit that wanted something different. Every single message board constructs an image of what their coach/team/program/school looks like and then claims that those are the logical things for recruits to care about. And yet every program loses out on recruits. It's crazy to pretend we know what each kids wants and even crazier to generalize all of their interests into one statement. That's why it's called recruiting and not selecting. Even if you're Kentucky.

Stupid thread, at that.
FoT, I may disagree with points you make, but I'm not childish enough to attack you personally.

I've been a member here far longer than you, and will continue to be long after Tubby leaves, retires, etc., when you will move on to a new team's message board.

I've never had any major beef with you being on this message board since Tubby joined the Gophers. I've read and haven't attacked any of your posts regarding Tubby's past teams, recruiting efforts, etc., even if they are extremely repetitive, annoying, or flat out inaccurate/false.

However, the negative tone you've taken with ad hominem attacks against longtime posters over the past 6 months or so is totally unnecessary. This is the only time I'll say something personal; GROW UP.

Actually Kentucky (under Calipari) does SELECT more than recruit players.

Tubby's teams (UK and Minnesota) have ranked in the Top 25 (offensively, per KenPom) in 5 of the past 7 years.

The poster is NOT stupid. His/her thread IS stupid. Recognize the difference.

Is the poster stupid or a numb nut? Which is it?

I am not sure why we are worried about Royce White recruiting players to Iowa State.

1. Iowa State is a step down from playing at the U of M.

2. Why would Royce have more influence on Coleman than his own brother / family?

Also I will be surprised if Royce ever steps on the court for Iowa State.

I see Coleman is #65 today on ESPN rankings. Must have been updated. My bad, he was at that spot previously it looks like.

I was looking at the profile for Coleman and Travis when I read JG's post, must not have clicked back over to Coleman's when I posted. My mistake.

Let's not forget that Royce is at Iowa State. Who knows, the two could be planning something in hopes of playing together. Why else would Joe visit Ames? I GUARANTEE ROYCE FRICKIN' WHITE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS.

I just want you all to know, if we can't recruit anyone notable this year, Tubby leaves, and we go back to winning 9 games a season. I put the blame SOLELY on.........Royce White. :)

Just out of curiousity, when did the University of Minnesota fanbase get so high on themselves? A step above Iowa State in what exactly? Football? Not quite. Basketball? Congratulations you made it all the way to a first round game. Taking a quick glance at recruiting, it seems to be in a sad state of affairs as well.

I was on the fence if Coleman was all that important of a pickup for ISU, but after reading this, I'm going to really enjoy it when Hoiberg signs him and gets a little recruiting pipeline going straight out of Minnesota.

I mean hell, it's not like you don't all owe us for the murder of Jack Trice anyways (Confused? Look it up).

okay if i call this guy a troll?

okay if i call this guy a troll?

As an ISU fan (& alum), I completely concur that he's a troll! I shouldn't have to, but I apologize for my fellow Cyclone fan who is making himself and our fanbase look like idiots.

There's no reason for animosity between ISU & Minnesota, the history of the two schools playing each other is pretty short and without much consequence, to be honest.

We (ISU) would love to get Coleman and we're excited about the potential network Hoiberg is trying to establish with recruits from the Twin Cities. I can only guess that Minnesota fans would prefer recruits like White & Coleman go to ISU instead of Wisconsin or Iowa if they choose not to go to Minnesota....at least the Gophers won't have to face them a couple times every year.

Best of luck in the upcoming footall and basketball seasons, I'll be at TCF for several games this fall!

I was going to say the same thing about Nolen/personnel. He will definitely speed things up and so will the loss of Westbrook. Devoe playing significant minutes at sg = fewer minutes dribbling around without purpose until the shotclock gets to 3.

You both suck at making points. Minnesota is the 4th fastest in a historically slow conference. Prior to the loss of Nolen, Gophers played a much more uptempo game on both sides of the ball. With the right personal, Tubby wants to run.

Tempo has a lot to do with personnel. It was tough to have an up-tempo style last season with Devoe at point and with very few players who could score off the dribble. Just curious... did you look to see how those rankings are calculated or are you just sold when you see someone has stats claiming to back an argument?

POINT goes to Plinnius! Based off the statistical data provided in Plinnius' post FOT's claim that the gophers play an up-tempo style is false.

Hopefully he doesn't have some more attractive offers coming soon. I have no idea what he's looking for, but his other offers don't really look anymore appealing than his hometown team.

Royce will have zero influence over Joe Coleman.

However, it's been no secret for awhile now that the Gophers are far from the locks most considered them to be for Joe and that it will be a very interesting and nervous recruitment for MN fans. Joe is a kid they absolutely must get. Won't go into the details of why Joe is down on MN but there are some issues in his mind and Tubby and co. need to fix it as best they can. He hasn't eliminated us by any means but it is not the slam dunk so many thought it would be.

Is this an insider thing? I see us in his "top 5". I don't think there's really any kind of order on any of those sites though.

Are the issues basketball related, or personal? Can it be fixed? Not that I trust rivals, but Coleman doesn't have the Gophers in his top 5 according to his profile.
